...And You Thought Cascade Took Forever

Commander / EDH Combo Multiplayer UR (Izzet)

emester

Despite only brewing my Arjun EDH deck in about a week or so, I found that it was remarkably more tuned then I ever expected it to be at this point. While it does follow the usual chip damage via Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Psychosis Crawler, as well as mill through Sphinx's Tutelage and Jace's Erasure, these are more or less the back up plans towards this deck. Instead, we want to draw our entire deck and slap down a Laboratory Maniac for the win.

So how do we accomplish this? Oddly enough its really quite simple. Like most decks, this Arjun, the Shifting Flame build is going to run a large amount of mana rocks in order to get our general. Once we get Arjun or Mindmoil out, we then begin casting low cmc spells such as Winds of Change, Library of Leng, Preordain, and so on to trigger Arjun's ability so we can sift through our deck for two specific cards, Alhammarret's Archive to double our Arjun trigger draws, and Paradox Engine to untap all of our mana rocks when we cast a low cmc spell, basically pseudo-infinite mana combo, to get our doubling draw engine going. Eventually we will have went through our deck so much in one turn that we are practically doing laps through our library, with our hand now being greater in size than our library. It is at this point where the deck is able to activate its main win condition by throwing down a Laboratory Maniac and then drawing our library for the win. However, since this is bound to raise some alarms, make sure that your are packing the sole Counterspell of the deck just to ensure victory.

(Just an aside, be sure to never prematurely cast or discard Counterspell or Laboratory Maniac. Doing this ensures that both cards will be in your massive hand before you are one spell away from decking yourself.)

Since creatures aren't exactly a focus here, the deck needs to run several ways cards that disrupt or deter anyone from messing up your board state. Crawlspace and Silent Arbiter put a cap on the amount of creatures an opponent can attack you with. Maze of Ith and Glacial Chasm are permanents that can prevent damage turn after turn. Young Pyromancer, Thopter Spy Network , Chasm Skulker, and Talrand, Sky Summoner all can generate a ton of creature tokens through casting spells and drawing cards, which are two things this deck will be doing very often. Mana Web and Sphinx of the Final Word are probably the most significant defence pieces of the deck, with one emptying our opponents mana pools to make our turn safe from counters and the other making our instants and sorceries that fuel our win condition uncounterable.

That about covers what I have seen with deck at this point so there very well may be a bunch of other interactions I have yet to notice. Feel free to leave suggestions and point out other synergies in the deck that I may have overlooked. Thanks!
