The Littlist Hobos - Subira Weenie Aggro Storm

Commander / EDH Mono-Red

limitsoflogic

Subira, the weenie queen.

Love the flavour of this commander. Proper nomad style - "Maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep movin' on."

With the exception of Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, this is a budget build. TBH he's only in there cos I pulled him in a booster.

The basic strategy is a weenie ball. Attack with a couple, then a few, and finally a lot of weenies. Then a few big bangers that power up your team, like Torbran, Thane of Red Fell, Relentless Assault and Berserkers' Onslaught turn up the heat and hopefully push you over the line.

However, your opponents can see this weenieball coming a mile away, and it is too optimistic to assume they will just leave you to your own devices. No, you need some ways to deal with the inevitable spanner in the works (especially wipes), and some tactics for slowing enemy strategies down so they don't take you out before you can get going.

So how do you play and how do you win?

Principle 1: Cheap, cheap, cheap

Everything has to be cheap, because if it ain't you are going to throw it away. So with just a couple of exceptions everything in the deck is CMC 3 or less (mean 2.37, median 2, mode 1). Get it on the board and get on with drawing more cards. This allows you to reduce the number of your big bangers, because in the course of the game you will draw so many cards that you have a great chance of hitting them anyway.

Principle 2: Start Quick

You want to get your team out fast and start drawing dem cards before your opponents get their boardstates together, so a bit of fast mana is essential early in the game or after a wipe. So Simian Spirit Guide, Seething Song, Mana Geyser, Glittering Stockpile, Strike it Rich in addition to the ordinary ramp.

Principle 3: Redundancy

At some point you are going to get your board wiped, and if you do not have several creatures in hand it's a looong way back. So you gotta have ways outside the hand to rebuild (or preserve) the board and start drawing dem cards again, namely Satyr's Cunning, Embereth Shieldbreaker, Ghitu Encampment, Guardian Idol, Impulsive Pilferer, Spawning Bed, and Goblin Chirurgeon.

Top Deck-Tech...

Shout out to Liquimetal Torque with Shenanigans for just being a beautiful bit of removal tech in this deck. Vindicate every turn? In red? Don't mind if I do!

Descent of the Dragons is a nice selective wipe that takes care of dirty threats without doing the dreaded reset. Sure, your opponents get 4/4 dragons, but so do you. Difference is they are trading in key creatures, while you are trading 1/1s. Indeed, if you pull this after reaching critical weenie mass and you have a haste enabler in play, you can convert your weenie ball to dragons for the win.

Recoup and Efreet Flamepainter are super-useful later in the game because you generally toss away so many cards, especially those all-important extra combat phases.

And that's about it! Suggestions welcome :)
