Embereth Shieldbreaker

Creature — Human Knight

(You may cast Embereth Shieldbreaker from exile if you sent it on an adventure.)

Battle Display

Sorcery — Adventure

Destroy target artifact.

(You may cast Battle Display for from anywhere that you have the permission to cast it, then exile it on an adventure instead of putting it into your graveyard. When you have not chosen to cast Battle Display, this card is treated only as Embereth Shieldbreaker in whatever zone it is in.)

(When not exiled on an adventure, Adventure cards function identically to modal double faced cards when regarding to the interactions of cards that look at them or attempt to cast them.)

You should switch out Torch Fiend for Embereth Shieldbreaker. It's sort of a reversal in terms of artifact destruction, but in the end you have a creature on the field rather than no creature and a destroyed artifact.

Based on the current Modern Meta being fairly discard heavy, I would switch out something like your Manglehorn for something like Embereth Shieldbreaker. That way you get a cheaper artifact destruction spell, while also keeping it safe in exile.

I've been working on my own version of this deck if you have any feedback: Liquideath

Be careful with suspend cards, since you cannot suspend them from exile. Profane Tutor exiled with you commander/etc will be gone for good. Same for Mox Tantalite, Sol Talisman, Lotus Bloom. Rebounds also do not work from exile, only hand. I.E Consuming Vapors

Also, Draugr Necromancer without any snow sources might be relevant, since snow mana can't be made from treasures.

Embereth Shieldbreaker just doesn't seem worth it honestly. I know they have adventure, but a sorcery speed Smelt into a vanilla with bad stats is bad. Bonecrusher Giant at least has an effect on the body, a way better body too, for 1 more mana on the creature, and 1 more mana for an instant adventure.

It's pretty hard/impossible to judge either without a list, but I would suggest there are better options than both, by a long way. 5cmc and 4cmc respectively is pretty big, and these guys do nothing on entering the battlefield, so you've given your opponent an absolute TON of time to setup and win before you're enacting any kind of plan (I'm assuming this is the main plan for the deck as I have no other information). On top of that, if you're planning on controlling the board state, you don't need big creatures, you just need to make sure the board is under your control, and then win at your leisure.

So instead, I would suggest you consider some of the following:

  • Shenanigans Lets you destroy whatever you want of your opponents, as many times as you'd like. At 2cmc, you can start peeling-away at every board-piece your opponent has as early as turn 3 - and have a guaranteed 1-destroy-per-turn until your opponent concedes, or you swing for lethal.

  • Gorilla Shaman gives you access to ruining all your opponents non-creature stuff (most notably/easily, their lands), and also provides a body to swing with when the coast-is-clear.

  • Embereth Shieldbreaker is a 1-mana destroy spell, which you can later turn into a creature to deal damage.

  • Ancient Grudge kills 2 artifacts for the price of 1 spell.

  • Reclamation Sage and/or Knight of Autumn can peel back an artifact on entry, provide bodies to attack with, and can be abused with the likes of Ephemerate

  • Also, while Collector Ouphe doesn't specifically destroy an artifact, you can use it to effectively turn off your opponents lands (make them artifacts before they draw), which will certainly help mess up what they're trying to do.

smack80 Thank you!

First off, you're absolutely right about The Circle of Loyalty . I keep trying to convince myself that it is worth having in there. So that's one cut to fit in something you're suggesting.

As for getting Haakon into the yard, between the discard support, self mill, and Buried Alive and Entomb , I rarely have trouble getting him there. However, I didn't know Call the Bloodline existed, and will definitely find one to put in here. So there's my swap - Call in, Circle out.

As for the rest of your suggestions, the biggest problem is figuring out what to cut. There's definitely some lackluster Knights on the list, but they all share one important quality: low CMC. My biggest problem is mana curve. If I don't get a good mix from the beginning, it turns into a midrange deck without an adequate amount of disruption. In other words, not so good. As a result, it would seem like a no-brainer to replace Embereth Shieldbreaker with Mirror Entity , for example, but that one more mana in the cost might exasperate the problem. As it already is, pretty much all of the Knights that make the deck sing are 3 CMC. I have found that I rely heavily on the little guys in the early game, and don't really want to lose them.

Likewise, I don't know how to fit the tribal spells in here. I've been trying to figure that out for a long time, and can't decide which category to choose from to make room for them. There's a pretty solid balance of:

And the little space left over after all of that is taken up by a handful of ramp, and a little bit of artifact recursion. So what do I cut?

I second the idea of cutting down to just 60 cards in 2 colors. Then, I'd try to identify the main gameplan you like to follow when playing the deck. That will inform any cuts, additions, and other revisions you make down the line.

The first archetype that jumps out at me is definitely knights. They are often Mardu () these days, but just Rakdos () should work just fine for casual play. You already have Belle of the Brawl , Barrow Witches , Charity Extractor , Embereth Paladin . Locthwain Paladin , Garna, the Bloodflame , Ogre Errant , Raging Redcap , and Tentative Connection which can definitely fit such a style. Most of the lower cost creatures and spells wouldn't be that bad either. I'll list some cards from the modern card pool under $5 that I think could be strong additions to such a deck.
Ashenmoor Liege , Bloodcrazed Paladin , Cavalier of Flame , Cavalier of Night , Champion of Dusk , Elite Headhunter , Embereth Shieldbreaker , Foulmire Knight , Hanweir Lancer , Hero of Oxid Ridge , Knight of the Ebon Legion , Kulrath Knight , Midnight Reaper , Murderous Rider , Olivia, Mobilized for War , Stormfist Crusader , and Weaselback Redcap are all knight creatures with various effects, costs, and price points that I see as playable. For more general knight synergy, Blacklance Paragon , Fervent Champion , Joust , Sigiled Sword of Valeron , Tournament Grounds , and my favorite, Smitten Swordmaster are options too. Toss in some solid removal like Lightning Bolt , Terminate , or Bedevil and you have the recipe for a strong tribal aggro deck.

The other major archetype I see being possible here is some sort of angel/dragon/demon big stuff deck. The problem is that such a deck is likely to be much slower, making it tougher to keep up in 1v1 games. Plus, a lot of those cards are legendary, so they tend to come with a hefty real-world price tag. Still, I've seen Kaalia of the Vast do some very scary stuff in casual. Such a deck would support your larger creatures as well as spells like Cauldron Dance and Victimize .

Creatures that make the cut is the toughest choice in this deck. At first I used to run few more knights before I realized the deck has to be less linear and more proactive to achieve wins. So came sunforger package. Because of that I had to get rid of the less impactful creatures. Right now, in my opinion there are two mechanics that need improvement, access to double strike (we only have embercleave) for better sword profits and ability to tuck instants back into library for sunforger recursion. While Mirran Crusader seems to be the best option to compensate for lack for double strike access, there are few problems with it.

  1. Most removal pieces are Red and White in pods I play, while he has Golgari protection
  2. It is harder to use him as a quick finisher in late game. It is way easier to go for infect kill with, Haakon, Stromgald Scourge + Phyrexian Crusader or use haste + almost free equipments with Fervent Champion to finish an opponent.

If Mirran Crusader had haste I would without a doubt auto include it here. Maybe i need to run Anger in this deck as well, but I don't want to draw graveyard hate on myself.

Right now I'm attempting to solve instant recursion issue with Reito Lantern in place of Embereth Shieldbreaker since it would allow me to recur spot removal spells. It also can tuck opponent wincons laying in their graveyard.
