“I had an inheritance from my father, It was the moon and the sun. And though I roam all over the world, The spending of it’s never done.” ― Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls

Through the years we adapt and grow, evolve into newer and hopefully better versions of ourselves, the same is true in Magic. For the course of a decade+ the helm of my commander arsenal was Surrak, Dragonclaw, a powerhouse deck that was upfront about the threat it posed. Often in my play groups games would become 2v1 or even 3v1 depending on how fast I ramped. Surrak brought me a sense of strength that inspired me, it didn't matter if I won, it mattered if I was a big fucking problem! I enjoy playing the villain, from the rise and suspense of an imminent threat to the showdown to even the triumph over said villain. Surrak played that role well and brought game tables to either a quick game or one filled with action and excitement! Surrak however, came up against something even the biggest and beefiest of cards can't face... time (in this case known as power creep). The cards started getting stronger at lower and lower costs. Five mana for a 6/6 was amazing... in 2014. I didn't want to give up this card I had grown so close to, after all it was my longest lasting deck! However, as any magic player knows, you can only taste defeat for so long before something is gonna change. Thankfully right at the time I was wondering who could take up the mantle of silly big creatures that was faster but not degenerate... Then she appeared. Eshki, Temur's Roar, who better to take up the mantle than his canonical daughter. She filled the shoes instantly and within minutes a deck I believed was finished, a new and incredibly exciting one appeared. Surrak will forever live within the 99, can can be slotted in for lower power groups, but Eshki will take the helm from here. She will pass the Inheritor's Rite and bring a shift to play that Surrak brought in days long past.
