It's harvest time! A highly janky card advantage/control deck that's overloaded on weird, surprisingly powerful interactions.

So, where are all the Scarecrows?? Show

At its core, this deck is based around its commander, Reaper King. His ETB makes for a really powerful board control tool - except that the scarecrow tribe is rather lackluster on the whole. In fact, we only play two regular old Scarecrows: Scuttlemutt and Heap Doll. That doesn't mean we're not interested in destroying our opponents' board, though! Instead, we use weird workarounds to trigger our commander. The most obvious of these is the Changeling ability. Mirror Entity, Taurean Mauler, Mothdust Changeling, Shapesharer, and Amoeboid Changeling make up the bulk of our Scarecrow package. In addition, Conspiracy and Xenograft can make all of our creatures enter as Scarecrows (combos with our Spirit Mirror ); Clever Impersonator and Phyrexian Metamorph can enter as copies of any Scarecrow on the battlefield; Blade of Selves can make copies of Reaper King or any other Scarecrow each combat phase; and Artificial Evolution can alter our commander to trigger on any random creature we play. All in all, we can blow up a really decent number of things as long as our commander is on the battlefield.

Why is this Scarecrow deck playing Sliver Overlord?? Show

It's not often that you come across a deck that has a minor Sliver subtheme. And runs Harabaz Druid in the same deck. And runs Cateran Summons, like, at all. And yet here we are. Abusing creature type interactions is kind of the idea behind this whole crazy deck. Spirit Mirror , for example, might seem like a mediocre card on its own, but along with Unnatural Selection or Amoeboid Changeling, it becomes an insane removal engine. Peer Pressure might seem nearly unusable outside of an odd limited format, but with just a few Changelings on the battlefield, it becomes a super powerful stealing spell that doesn't get fizzled by hexproof or protection. Sliver Hivelord is a very good 5-drop on its own, but with a Xenograft on Slivers on your battlefield it becomes insane. I could go on and on about all the crazy interactions this deck can do, but I literally couldn't list them all. Essentially, by using niche tribal cards (and tribe-hate cards) as well as effects that alter creature types, you can do some really interesting things.

Wait, but how do you expect to win with awful draws like Trickery Charm ?? Show

As any experience Commander brewer knows, a really easy trap to fall into is to make a deck with a cool core and not enough support. As such, our deck is chock full of card draw/filtering, tutoring, and ramp.

Draw/filtering

You might have noticed that our 5-color deck is more than 1/3 blue. This is because drawing cards is our #1 priority with so much jankiness in our control strategy. We play blue staples like Fact or Fiction, Rhystic Study, and Treasure Cruise. Additionally, we've got 5-color all-star Bringer of the Blue Dawn , plus Sphinx's Revelation and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. Of course, it wouldn't be a true jank deck without some unexpected cards. Reaper King technically has a CMC of 10, so we can use Rush of Knowledge and Ugin's Insight to get an insane amount of draw or filtering, and Padeem, Consul of Innovation has the added bonus of protecting our commander. Oh, and Descendent's Path can randomly get a Kozilek, Butcher of Truth onto the battlefield for free. Yay!

Tutoring

No 5-color jank deck would be complete without Bringer of the Black Dawn. And in a deck that can get so much value out of Conspiracy or Spirit Mirror , we'd be remiss if we didn't run Sterling Grove. But in the changeling subtheme of this deck, we've also got Cateran Summons, Homing Sliver , Sliver Overlord, Elvish Harbinger and Defiant Falcon to find our Changelings to trigger Reaper King or whatever crazy use we might have for them. And don't forget that our tutors can also search for removal even when our commander is MIA - Crib Swap is technically a Mercenary, Sliver, Elf, and Rebel!

Ramp

Our commander and a significant portion of our deck cost 5 or more mana to play. Not only that, but with five colors and a pretty low budget for lands, ramp and fixing are gonna be really crucial to the function of this deck. This deck's absolute best ramp cards, in my experience, are Manaweft Sliver and its near-clone, Gemhide Sliver. With a decent boardstate and a Mirror Entity on the battlefield, these guys can let us produce an extra 3 or 4 of whatever color we need pretty early on. There are also plenty of other mana rocks and dorks, such as Chromatic Lantern and Harabaz Druid . Mirari's Wake takes the deck to insane levels all by itself. The jankiest ramp in the deck, though, has got to be Elemental Resonance / Energy Tap . Targeting Reaper King or even just Bringer of the Blue Dawn , you can get these to make tons of mana way before they should be able to.

The deck has some normal stuff too, right? Show

To tie the deck together and deal with responses from our opponents, we also run some pretty typical commander things. Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, and Mother of Runes can protect our valuable creatures. Regrowth gives us a little bit of recursion. We have a bit of removal for when our commander isn't enough, ranging from Cyclonic Rift to Hide/Seek to Decimate. Finally, we've got just a splash of counterspells such as Jaded Response and Swan Song to supplement our board control.

How to win Show

Nobody likes a control deck with no win con. Luckily, we've got more than our share that synergize with our deck. Since we're playing a ramp-heavy, card-loving, permanent-destroying deck, there's no better primary win con than good ole Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. A close second is just dumping mana into Mirror Entity, which we'll typically tutor out for utility anyway. Reaper King himself makes a rather formidable beater in a pinch as well. Of course, there is also a janky, unexpected win con buried in these cards. Using creature type manipulation cards (a la Unnatural Selection and Shields of Velis Vel), we can use Peer Pressure or Sliver Overlord to gain control of a whole lot of our opponents' creatures and simply kill them with their own win cons. Hooray!
