Hello there community! I am on a Madcap Experiment kick lately and was wondering what the "Best" targets were for this card.

I'm currently running the deck with the gameplan of cheating Gearhulks from Kaladesh for a big beefy body with removal/burn/draw possibilities.

Other options I saw were the brothers war prototype machines that I think are pretty similar to the Gearhulks but I'm not sure I'm convinced they are better.

That is pretty much the extent of my looking into to Pioneer cardpool and was wondering if I missed anything.

Some thoughts:

  • Speaker of the Heavens feels pretty useful/mandatory here.

  • The Book of Exalted Deeds is pretty useless unless you have some way to abuse it (i.e putting it on a land). Steel Seraph also feels out-of-place and unhelpful here.

  • I’m not convinced that Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is helpful here, as it might trip-up your early turns more than it’ll help you late game - most your early turns require only white-pips, which it can’t help with. Late game i don’t see you needing mana anyway.

  • Even though I don’t think you want Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, i do think you need more lands. 20 is super low, and I would think this deck needs at least 23 to perform.

  • your deck is doing a lot at sorcery speed, you’re unlikely to be able to use Shelter in a way that isn’t clumsy - i’d just ditch it.

Blazing Shoal and Shining Shoal would be cool tech for this strategy.

As for cuts:

Volcanic Salvo big CMC is useful but the card is lackluster. Greater Gargadon and Heroes Remembered are at least neat exile tech (especially with the Shoals I just suggested)

Emeria's Call  Flip the tokens are useless to this strategy and there are cheaper ways to grant indestructible.

Loxodon Warhammer and Maul of the Skyclaves for the 2 Swords I suggested. All your other equipment serve a clear purpose.

Steel Seraph is this just swiss army knife value? Angelfire Ignition at least exiles for a trigger. I'd swap Semblance Anvil for the Seraph unless I'm missing something.

Torbran, Thane of Red Fell great card but I don't see it as being degenerate in this strategy. Jester's Cap can ruin the combo opponent or at the very least use other people's high CMC to feed Bell Borca.

multimedia on Urza upgrade

Hey, some nice upgrades to the precon so far. Good additions of wincon combos: Sword + Foundry + Altar and Urza, PoK + Altar + Battlesphere.

Consider cutting a few of the lesser unnecessary higher mana cost creatures for some more draw? Constructs have an easy time if they can attack at doing combat damage to an opponent thanks to menace from Urza. If you can draw a card each time a Construct does combat damage to an opponent then you're getting great value from Constructs and a good reason to want to attack. Bident of Thassa is in the precon and it's repeatable draw with Constructs. Research Thief is more repeatable draw with Constructs that's also a flying artifact creature. More repeatable draw from Constructs can help to draw combo pieces.

Skullclamp is in the precon and it's excellent with Sword + Foundry combo since it creates 1/1 Thopters that can then each be saced for 1 mana to draw two cards. Because Urza's artifact creature affinity can pay for his Commander tax then Skullclamp with Urza is another way for repeatable draw.

Grim Hireling doesn't draw with Constructs it makes ramp, treasures which can help with Revel in Riches since the only reliable source of treasures here is Tithe. Hireling's effect is like Thopter Spy Network where you can trigger it more than once if you have creatures do combat damage to more than one opponent.

When deciding to add a card, it can help deck building and the mana curve to cut a card that's more mana cost. Wire Surgeons is a lesser 6 drop here than the rest and it's effect is only artifact creature not artifact. Having to pay the mana cost of an artifact creature in your graveyard to then exile that artifact is not good. Sharuum the Hegemon another 6 drop here who reanimates an artifact which is much better than what Surgeons does. Marionette Master can be a wincon with combos: Sword + Foundry + Altar and Urza, PoK + Altar + Battlesphere, but this is adding a fourth card, 6 drop, to the combos which is a lot and is really not needed because these combos create infinite artifact tokens which gives Constructs infinite power/toughness.

If you want to combo with Sword + Foundry then you can't control any effect that increases p/t of artifact creatures. Thankfully, Foundry can sac any nontoken artifact, before you want to combo with Sword + Foundry sac the artifact anthem effect. This makes anthem effects that increase p/t that are artifacts better than anthem nonartifact cards. Urza, Prince of Kroog is the exception since it's part of another combo. Since playing Sword + Foundry consider cutting Tempered Steel?

You want to avoid artifact exile effects as much as possible because you have no way of getting back a card in exile. Playing some more Counterspells is a mana efficent way to counter opponent exile effects. Urza's Ruinous Blast hurts you too much since it exiles all Constructs and all combo pieces here except Urza, Prince of Kroog. All the 4 drops here have effects either when ETB or repeatable except Filigree Attendant doesn't, making it a much lesser card that could be cut?

Steel Seraph is a reasonable priced upgrade for Hexavus. Seraph can be cast with prototype for 3 mana giving you a 3/3 artifact creature flier to help artifact creature affinity for Urza and it can on your turn at combat give a creature you control flying including Urza. Wonder is another better option then Hexavus for flying, Unctus, Grand Metatect or Armix, Filigree Thrasher can discard it while in combat. Discard Wonder when you have to discard down to 7 card hand size because you drew so many cards.

Good luck with your deck.

Hey, well done so far on a budget casual upgrading the precon.

If attacking with Constructs is what you want to be doing then here's some budget upgrades to consider:

When you can draw cards from Constructs doing combat damage to opponents thanks to menace from Urza then you're getting much value from Constructs. Bident of Thassa is in the precon. Vault of the Archangel is tech from a land, menace with deathtouch is a nasty combination because opponents are not going to block Constructs and lose all their creatures. Just having Vault untapped with enough mana to activate it is enough to make your Constructs essentially unblockable. You can also gain a ton of life with Constructs.

Some other budget upgrades to consider:

Good luck with your deck.

Hey, on a low budget well done with upgrades so far to the precon. Research, Paradise, Padeem, Glimmervoid, Ethersworn, Extinction, Wurmcoil, the mana Myrs, Fellwar, Kappa, Raffines these are all fine upgrades.

Some cards from the precon to consider adding back in.

Bident of Thassa is very good, it's another artifact repeatable mass draw effect with Constructs. Liquimetal Torque is a mana rock for ramp or it can make Urza or Padeem an artifact and doing so makes these cards much better. If Urza is an artifact he gets all bonus for being one, gains his own menace making it easier to do Commander damage to opponent with him. 4/5 Urza without menace can still do Commander damage, but he's easier to block by opponent then if he has menace. When Padeem is an artifact it gains hexproof which increases protection a lot.

Skullclamp can be nice repeatable draw for the mana cost and by adding the mana Myrs then you added fodder that can die to draw cards when not useful anymore to make mana. You have sources of 1/1 Thopters and these pair well with Skullclamp. Armix, Filigree Thrasher is a 3 drop artifact creature to help Urza affinity and with menace it can be deceptively good repeatable creature removal.

The mana curve of the precon is very high and you haven't reduced it much. Even when not counting Extinction, Monitor, Ethersworn, Kappa and Urza Commander the mana curve here is still too high. Some cards to consider cutting to reduce the mana curve.

Shimmer Dragon of these suggestions is a good card, but it's a high mana cost creature that's not an artifact and you can get better repeatable draw from less mana cost sources such as Bident of Thassa. Angel of the Ruins is another good card of these suggestions, but Meteor Golem is also a 7 drop who removes any nonland permanent. I think Meteor is better and you don't need both Angel and Meteor. You don't need Noxious Gearhulk since Necron Deathmark is a better creature removal effect for less mana. Flash is better than menace + life gain.

My favorite budget creature with blue artifact strategies is Master Transmuter. Some of best card art and has one of the most powerful repeatable effects with artifacts for it's price. Bounce any artifact you control and because Transmuter doesn't target then put that same artifact right back onto the battlefield.

This bounce interaction can give you a lot of value with artifacts that have an ETB ability for only 1 mana to bounce. Great with Monitor and Ethersworn. With Ethersworn after bouncing choose to put another artifact from your hand onto the battlefield or nothing since then you can cast Ethersworn again next turn to cascade again. Bounce Baleful or Infiltrator to put Wurmcoil onto the battlefield and then cast Baleful or Infiltrator next turn for more draw, etc.

Transmuter has many other uses too such as can save an artifact from opponent target removal or board wipe, bounce the artifact in response and then if not a board wipe put the artifact right back onto the battlefield safe. Can even bounce itself to protect itself.

Good luck with your deck.

Hi what je bout Steel Seraph ?

Guerric on [Primer] Helming the Host of Heaven *Update*

Here are my most recent updates, with some brief justifications. I've telegraphed most of my thoughts on these before, so I'll try to go for a briefer treatment.

1) Harsh Mercy OUT Darksteel Mutation IN

Harsh Mercy seemed like it would be amazing, but I find I don't often need to wipe the board in this deck, and usually when I considered using Mercy it was to deal with one or two problematic creatures. Unfortunately, they get to pick what they keep and can always keep something, so this turns out to be not as good as we'd think, particularly as we don't really need it to clear blockers since we fly. More targeted removal seems to be what the doctor ordered, and Darksteel Mutation can sideline problematic combo commanders. I may switch this to Fateful Absence eventually, but for now we'll go for the more durable if less flexible answer.

2) Serra Paragon IN Baneslayer Angel OUT

It should be fairly clear why this card belongs in, as it is amazing and adds on the recursion in the deck for the low cost of 4 mana. We can get her going as early as turn three! Baneslayer is iconic and fun to play, but it is higher on our curve and has never been too synergistic, so it gets the axe.

3) Karmic Guide OUT Emeria Angel IN

I was always nervous about the cmc on the latter, but others have assured me it works great, and this update is lowering my curve across the board so I can afford to raise it two for a far superior version of Guide. Emeria Angel lets us get back whatever we want turn after turn, and is a must answer value piece that can do work in the late game.

4) Angel of Invention OUT Steel Seraph IN

This change is more experimental, but the latter costs three when we cast it here, which lowers our curve by two. Its ability is really relevant and synergistic, and allows us to have lifelink the turn we cast this. I do like what I can cutting though as anthems are good here, so there is a chance I go back or re-add it down the road, but for now we are cutting the curve.

5) Sigarda's Splendor OUT Smuggler's Share IN

Smuggler's Share will no doubt be good in this deck and we need to cut a draw piece for it. I agonized on what to cut as Splendor is better in the early game and less likely to be removed, but is bad late game when it won't give us value. Vanquisher's Banner is amazing in the late game but is a bit more of a high risk, high reward sort of card here. I opted to keep banner because I feel like we need more of the latter category than the former. We'll see how it goes, though others have assured me that banner works well in the late game, and it has indeed done that where I've used it in other decks.

6) Ghost Quarter OUT Mutavault IN

While I like having the extra answer to lands, we can't afford too many colorless lands in this deck and I think this is the least needed as we also have Generous Gift. Mutavault is great obviously for the combo with The Book of Exalted Deeds, but it is also a great way to upper our counters with spare mana. If we activate it on our turn before casting any angels we'll get extra counters on said angels when they ETB. This utility can definitely make a difference over the course of the game even without making it into a Platinum Angel land, and the latter is amazing.

7) Eerie Interlude OUT Guardian of Faith IN

Interlude was always bad because you lose all of your counters on the blink since Giada would re-enter at the same time as them. Guardian is awesome because by phasing out they never leave the battlefield and thus keep all of their counters. Of course if you have Teferi's Protection do feel free to play that in place of either this or Cosmic Intervention
