Decommissioned

this deck was disassembled over a year ago. It had its fun. won me 2 tournaments including a game-day event. and roughly $150. cant argue with that! =D feel free to tech out of it, but bear in mind this deck, as is, will get outpaced by most decks in the meta today. co-co didn't exist when i was playing this, urzatron has changed a crazy ammount, lantern control didnt exist, twin no longer exists, thopter combo was still banned, and control wasn't fast enough. not to mention mono-red burn is now naya burn. TLDR: this deck is too out-of date to be competitive anymore.

OUT: Island, Deadwood Treefolk IN: Golgari Guildgate, Woodland Stream I rarely have early-game mana problems with this deck, but that doesn't mean I should keep running so few green sources.

Play test Triumph!
lightningsage15, 8 years ago
I've won almost every time I've played with this deck in multiplayer. It's really good against 3 or more people although I keep running into the problem of my opponents hands becoming empty and just playing out their top deck, making Nath's ability a moot point. I added Geth's Grimoire on a suggestion from a friend to help with green's card draw difficulty. I haven't been able to play test enough yet to see what this addition will add to the deck.

Minor changes
The_Ninjurai, 8 years ago
-2 Deathcap Cultivator -1 Nameless Inversion +1 Boon Satyr +1 Herald of Torment +1 Warren Weirding Sideboard +2 Brown Ouphe +1 Golgari Charm +2 Illness in the Ranks
Deathcap Cultivator didn't look like it fit into the deck since the deck isn't trying to ramp. Thought adding in an enchantment creature would help with Delirium. Wasn't sure which to add in, so doing a split on Boon Satyr and Herald of Torment.
Warren Weirding was put in over a Nameless Inversion so I'd have another Sorcery and a way to deal with Hexproof.
Brown Ouphe are to turn off Tormod's Crypt and other pesky enchantments.
Still haven't played with the deck, so any suggestions or comments would be helpful. Hoping to build this and wanting a good list to try out. Changes will probably be made even after building.

August 24, 2016: Minor Changes

Will be testing this out on Commander nights. I often drew too much high cmc reanimation too early, which quickly became a problem for Kaalia. Dread Return's flashback is also nearly unusable in this deck, and Obzedat's Aid is simply too slow.
Additionally, Magmaquake gives us a great one-sided board clear (something Kaalia badly needs that's not called Archangel Avacyn Flip) and Whispersilk Cloak will provide some much needed protection.

Card Replacements
Love-in-Theory, 8 years ago
Replaced Master Warcraft on Mainboard with Return to Dust. Both are good in their own ways, especially since they both can be triggered through Sunforger. However I feel like I will make more use of Return to Dust especially in my meta.
Replaced Puresteel Paladin with Hellkite Charger. Puresteel Paladin's metalcraft is useful with its 0 cost to equip, but that only works if he is alive and on the field. In my meta with Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite rearing it's ugly head a lot of the time, I feel like Hellkite Charger's infinite combo will be much more useful.

Changed a bunch of stuff out for new stuff, added Craterhoof Behemoth and Tooth and Nail as notable additions. Switched Decree of Pain for Black Sun's Zenith to deal with indestructible creatures, gonna see if it performs better.
Small Updates
abby315, 8 years ago
Made room for Temur Sabertooth and Cloudstone Curio, plus Ancient Stirrings as a land fixer or a way to dig for our combo pieces. Added Eldritch Evolution because it's a great tutor.
Swapped Shamanic Revelation to put Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury back in.
Swapped Sword of the Paruns for Staff of Domination, which I've finally decided to shell out the cash for; Sword takes so much mana to set up that it's easier to build up a 5-mana mana dork for Staff than pay 7 to start up Sword.
Added Glimpse of Nature ayy.
Added Selvala, Heart of the Wilds because she's a great elf, great mana dork, and possible infinite combo piece (either a creature with 5+ mana or, as Darkest points out, 3 mana to kickstart).
Reset discussion just to clean up some conversations!

Thief of Blood illegal?
VampireBloodSlave13, 8 years ago
Checked on gatherer, Thief of Blood isn't on the restricted or banned lists for modern, anyone able to shed some light on this?
Updated and Overhauled for Recent Sets
Necrotize, 8 years ago
Decided to finally come back to this deck. Luckily, Shadows over Innistrad and Conspiracy 1-2 brought some fairly good spirits. I also revamped the deck to make it a little more competitive. This meant swapping out some of the less useful cards that were in just because they were spirits and introducing more engines and synergy. It also placed higher value on Arcane Instants like Shields of Velis Vel, Otherworldly Journey and Charge Across the Araba as instant speed wipes are far more valuable than some generic flier.
This sadly meant the deck had pull back on the token producing to make room, but tokens still make a very strong wincon with several cards. Cards in the Maybeboard are either things I'm considering, or cards that would be used in the alternate, stax heavy variant of this deck that I might whip up just for those who are deserving. ;)

FNM Modern

All around bad showing by this deck that night. I went 2:2 (one win was a by) I won vs. Infect. I lost vs. Soul Sisters and a UW turns deck.
Soul Sisters was the first time I have had such bad mana issues; I have seldom had trouble keeping a one land hand and in game two (lost game 1) I mulliganed to 6 to keep a Steam Vent. After 4 turns that was it for land after casting 3 cantrips and my scry to find more land.
The UW turns deck was cool and something I have not seen before. It played Gigadrowse and Exhaustion to lock me down till it was able to cast any and all take an extra turn effects he could including the awaken one and use that as his beat down. I was able to win game 2 by playing low curve creatures and cheap counter magic targeting his Exhaustion and extra turn effects.
Other then the mana screw round 2 I would say the deck did fine, just feels like it's missing something.

Deck Update!
JP_Xinnam, 8 years ago
Main board:
In: Laboratory Maniac, Brainstorm
Out: Treasure Cruise, Impulse
Side board:
In: Echoing Truth, Gush
Out: Boomerang, Chaos Warp
Added a backup Laboratory Maniac kill to the deck (to go along with Enter the Infinite), and put a better bounce spell in the board. Gush is also there to grab the Lab Maniac win in a pinch.
