Theme and Goals

A Green / Red deck for casual play. This is a kitchen table deck based on the cards I have and ones I could find locally for a moderate price.

Deck Plan:
The central idea of the deck is to play Ruric Thar, the Unbowed , locking out much of the opponent's game plan, then using a bunch of quality creatures with nice abilities to deal with any remaining threats and finish the job.

Since I'm not currently running anything to avoid damage from Ruric Thar, the Unbowed 's effect, I include only 3 enchantments, which are relatively cheap and very useful for this deck's plan. If I draw them early enough, I'll play them before Ruric Thar; if not, it depends on the game state, but they probably won't be needed.

Potential Changes

I'm considering the following.

  • Swapping out one or both Llanowar Elves for Quirion Elves .
  • Swapping out the Naya Panorama s for more Forest s and Mountain s. ### Categories and Cards --> Set the pull-down menu above the deck list to Custom Categories to see the cards sorted by role. Clear the pull-down or set it to Type to restore the regular view.
  • Dense Foliage Gives every creature protection from spells. I'm not running any spells that target, so it's a one-sided handicap for my opponent's game. Since this isn't true Shroud, my creatures' abilities will still target and work just fine.
  • Familiar Ground My creatures can't be blocked by more than 1 creature. In most cases, my creatures will be stronger.
  • Fires of Yavimaya Gives my creatures Haste. My big creatures take a while to come out, so it helps to be able to use them on arrival.
  • Druid of the Anima Produces mana in any of the colors I'm using.
  • Llanowar Elves Early ramp.
  • Orcish Lumberjack Produces mana quickly in my colors.
  • Quirion Elves Produces mana in Green or any one other color. Choose Red.
  • Zhur-Taa Druid Does double duty by giving me green mana and dealing ping damage to my opponents.
  • Deadly Recluse Cheap blocker with Deathtouch and Reach. Helps hold the fort until the big guys come out to play.
  • Tangle Angler Can block fairly large creatures and bring them down a peg in so doing.
  • Fierce Empath Tutors my payload creatures.
  • Nightshade Peddler Gives Deathtouch to another of my creatures. Good synergy with Apocalypse Hydra / Forgestoker Dragon (death-ping), and Inferno Titan (when attacking). I'm loving the sheer utility of this guy.
  • Ogre Battledriver Just makes every one of my creatures better and faster.
  • Ruric Thar, the Unbowed Interferes with most opponents' plans.
  • Tangle Angler Can help get damage through by drawing the most troublesome blocker to itself.
  • Apocalypse Hydra Whatever size you can afford, and it can ping if need be.
  • Flamewake Phoenix Flies, has Haste, and comes back to the field in time for battle every turn.
  • Forgestoker Dragon Flies, pings, and shuts down blockers.
  • Inferno Titan Firebreathing and it does 3 dividable damage when it shows up and when it attacks.
  • Ruric Thar, the Unbowed The star of this particular show. Vigilance, reach, and does serious damage to anyone casting a non-creature spell.
  • Savageborn Hydra As large as you can afford to pay for. Double Strike, and you can spend spare mana to grow it even more.
  • Ambush Viper Blocker. Surprise.
  • Disciple of the Old Ways Blocker .
  • Oblivion Ring Utility. Non-Land removal.
  • Plains Powers other sideboard cards.
  • Revoke Existence Utility. Enchantment / Artifact removal.
  • Ruric Thar, the Unbowed A spare, in case we're facing discard / mill.
  • Savageborn Hydra Beater. Just an awesome card.
  • Scuttling Doom Engine Beater. Blocker. A little harder to chump block. Does serious damage when it dies. Hard to deal with.
  • Wolfbriar Elemental Beater. Brings tokens with it if multi-kicked. Helps if you need to go wide.
  • Maybe: Wickerbough Elder Removal for an artifact or enchantment.

    Updates Add

    Goals
The goals of this change are to improve the mana curve, to add a bit more ramp, to accelerate the damage, and to restrict the granting of haste to my own creatures only.

    Added
    1x Fires of Yavimaya
    2x Zhur-Taa Druid
    2x Fanatic of Xenagos
    1x Wickerbough Elder

    1x Concordant Crossroads
    1x Elvish Pioneer
    1x Invader Parasite
    1x Omnath, Locus of Rage
    1x Oran-Rief Hydra

    Goals
The goals of this change are to speed up the casting of my best creatures by a turn or two, improve the reliability of finding the payload creatures, and decrease the mana curve a bit.

    Added
3x Orcish Lumberjack - Fast mana in this deck's colors
3x Fierce Empath - Tutors the critical pieces
