Part of my Figurehead cycle of decks: a set of 6 mono-coloured edh decks, each led by a different figurehead, and each with their own theme to the deck. Check out all of them here: The Figurehead Cycle

This deck was the first in the cycle, although I didn't know it at the time. I just wanted to make a black deck because I didn't have one, and King Macar looked interesting. The theme of this deck is Artifacts, generating them with Macar, using the mana from the gold to ramp into bigger creatures, and using them to manipulate Macar to generate more.

The Commander

King Macar, the Gold-Cursed is a fantastic commander if you have the deck to utilise him. At first glance, he might not look like much, only a 2/3 for 4 mana, and only 2 of it generic at that, an his ability only happens when he untaps. But, at the very least getting to exile one creature per turn and getting a free mana for it is quite nice, and if you build around him he can become a super removal and ramp machine.

The Deck

Obviously, what we want to be doing is untapping King Macar (and, by extension, tapping him first). Honor-Worn Shaku, Smuggler's Copter, Paradise Mantle, Springleaf Drum, Untethered Express, Holdout Settlement, and Koskun Falls provide free ways of tapping Macar, while Icy Manipulator and Ring of Xathrid (if he regenerates) do so for a price. Jandor's Saddlebags and Umbral Mantle can untap him, and Puppet Strings, Sword of the Paruns, and Thornbite Staff can do both.

Mobile Garrison and Maze of Ith deserve special mentions here, as they provide both a free tap and free untap of Macar. Clock of Omens also deserves attention, which will be explained in the Combos section below.

Other worthy mentions are Kuldotha Forgemaster who can sacrifice 3 of your Golds to go and get any artifact you want (Blightsteel Colossus is always fun), Blinkmoth Urn and Krark-Clan Ironworks allow you to turn your copious Gold into copious amounts of mana, and Death Wish is just great utility, since you can go and find whatever you need to deal with the situation, and it doesn't matter about colours since your Gold can generate it.

The Combos

The most notable combo piece in the deck is Clock of Omens. If you can turn King Macar into an artifact with Mycosynth Lattice/Silverskin Armor then he goes infinite (or at least, as much as there are creatures to exile). You can tap Macar and another artifact (including the Clock itself) to activate the Clock's ability, targeting King Macar. This untaps Macar, exiting a creature and creating a Gold token. You can then repeat this process by tapping Macar and the Gold to untap Macar as many times as you want to exile a many creatures as you want.

Kormus Bell+Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth turns all lands into creatures, so they can be targeted by King Macar, just to be even more rude.

And, for non-creature destruction, Krark-Clan Ironworks+Spine of Ish Sah becomes : destroy target permanent.
