Fortuitous Find Discussion

Lanzo493, I look at it this way. 1rst, they burn spells are actually more effective than you think, the are really helpful early game. 2nd, Fortuitous Find is one of the only recursion cards in my deck, so it is very helpful if, lets say Epitaph Golem and Ashnod's Altar are in my graveyard. 3rd, the cantrips are very effective when someone plays stuff like Damping Matrix , Cursed Totem , or Linvala, Keeper of Silence . It allows me to not depend on Grenzo for everything.

Personally, I would just remove as many instants and sorceries as possible. I would keep the removal ones, but the cards like Fortuitous Find , Scouring Sands , Warp World , Grave Birthing , Expedite , Incinerate , Lightning Bolt , and Lightning Strike aren't very strong for a creature-based commander. Burn spells just can't kill the threats present in commander, and cheap cantrips aren't necessary because your commander itself is a cantrip once you get enough creatures into your deck. I know it's tempting to get instants and sorceries back that Grenzo chucks into the graveyard, but outside of Past in Flames , I would try to keep the deck more focused towards creatures. It's better to make better use of Grenzo's ability to cheat in creatures then try to shore up his weakness of whiffing on other spells.

Thanks for the help!! I think if I can justify the cut, Gnat Miser will become a sideboard tool, but for the moment it fits well with my strategy. Buried Ruin can be replaced by Fortuitous Find, which I sorta forgot about. Bojuka Bog was well worth the suggestion, and I'm fine with the sorta high pricetag. I might find an alternative to Dimir Machinations, because at 2$ for what's essentially just removal and a tutor, it's not incredible. Ghost Quarter seems somewhat necessary for my sideboard, considering Voltron dominates Modern. Just to give you an idea of my strat, I like to play Demonic Pact ASAP and keep it for one or two turns after playing it, because the draw can seriously help my combo if a piece is missing, and the removal is always nice. The hound is largely for a pressure piece for early game so I can discourage Zoo decks.

What do you think of Fortuitous Find, Restoration Gearsmith and Obzedat's Aid as additional recursion or as a replacement for the shepherd due to the lesser CMC ?

The drawback would be that they don't put the cards into play ...

I haven't played Standard in well over a year, but I'll do my best:

  • If you're concerned with Approach, more hand disruption might help, as well as more early plays to get some extra damage in. 1-2 copies of Unburden could be useful, and Miasmic Mummy pulls double duty
  • Against aggro, more early plays will help. I recommend Miasmic Mummy again since it can block an early creature and pre-emptively stop a future play. I also recommend upping the count of Fatal Push
  • Adding more cheap creatures also provides more ammo for Whisper, Blood Liturgist if you decide you want to have another copy of her for more consistency
  • Settle the Score doesn't do enough to help your plan to justify how slow it is. Replace it with more copies of Fatal Push and/or Vraska's Contempt
  • Gilded Lotus doesn't seem to help your plan at all. I think you'd be much better off replacing them with more Swamps. That will help you hit your land drops more consistently and makes Cabal Stronghold slightly better
  • Replace Soul Salvage with Wander in Death as a straight upgrade, just in case you get into a situation where you need some other card more than the normal effect
  • Taking out The Eldest Reborn and Duress will weaken your options against Teferi decks and other control decks, so consider that issue before doing it
  • Morbid Curiosity and Fortuitous Find don't do anything for you. Take them out of the sideboard
  • Is there a specific deck that makes you want to include Dispossess in the board? If not, consider taking it out

Nice. As someone who has other hobbies, budget deck are always fun! Have you thought about adding Fortuitous Find? Good way to retrieve newts in you graveyard.

Add Fortuitous Find to the list of cards not showing up in the inventory search.

Dralnu seems really risky to run as a commander. One Blasphemous Act and you're pretty much out of the game.

So let's protect him!

Magebane Armor, Blinding Powder, Shield of the Avatar, Soratami Cloud Chariot maybe?

If not, some emergency sac outlets may help. Ashnod's Altar, High Market etc...

Further, I think the deck could use a greater mass of instants and sorceries. Maybe up it from 25% of the deck to 33%, cutting some creatures and enchantments.

From the maybeboard, Secrets of the Dead, Nephalia Drownyard, Cyclonic Rift, Ancient Excavation, and Rise from the Tides all seem pretty good.

If you go really heavy into the self mill aspect, some creature recursion might be nice. Raise Dead, Fortuitous Find, Dread Return...

Good luck! +1 for risky commanders!
