Updates Add

With Avatar upon us, it's time to recap the deck's performance and changes. I am still heavily against UB, but the earthbending stuff seems really good. I have not had a chance to delve into the set though, so time will tell if I find cards to add to the list. A few notes to start based on the following swaps I made with EOE, all of which are staying:

Avenger of Zendikar > Famished Worldsire

Avenger of Zendikar was never my favorite card. I love that it makes plants, but for my own sake, I want to make a separate landfall list, and I prefer to not have overlapping cards in lists. Not that is was bad, just not what I wanted. Famished Worldsire on the other hand, is effectively a wincon. Blowing up all my lands to draw upwards of 20+ cards, and getting to replay them all with any crucible effect is amazing. Also getting a big beater as a bonus is nice, as it play well with all of my power 4+ cards. It plays more in line with the themes of this deck than Avenger, so for now it will stay.

Felidar Retreat > On Wings of Gold

On Wings of Gold might be the one card I have most severely misevaluated. Turning all my tokens into fliers and giving them a buff is amazing. It turns some of my mediocre token producers into real threats, while also giving the main token engine (Plant Cowboys) some valuable evasion. Couple that with that card's ability to produce its own zombies, which on first glance I thought would never trigger, has been pretty substantial in supporting the main plan. Every crucible effect and flashback style cast now also makes a flying zombie, its crazy good. Incidentally it can be recurred by Angel of Indemnity which continues to be a standout card.

Echoing Deeps > Kavaron, Memorial World

Kavaron, Memorial World has been stellar. Just like all the utility lands, its not always amazing, but when its good, its really good. It has not hindered me in the slightest, and having a mass haste enabler on a land has been exactly what the deck wanted. Surprisingly I have not felt the loss of Echoing Deeps yet, but that may still change later as the list adapts. For now, I am quite happy.

Tectonic Reformation > Exploration Broodship

This one is the most interesting change, as I am not sure how this will play out in the long run. I love Exploration Broodship. Having another extra land drop and a recursion outlet on the same card is really fun. I dislike that I need other cards to get it started, but it fleshes out the 1 mana spot well. Tectonic Reformation has potential still, but I don't think I have ever seen it perform, and in the few times I saw the broodship in play, it was much more impactful. It will stay for now even though I still would prefer card draw in this spot.

The next change involves a rule I completely forgot existed. A crucible effect can let me play lands off the backs of MDFCs from the graveyard! This allows for a bit more flexibility on these cards than I originally expected. I can play the land side of a MDFC that I mill, bounce it with Arid Archway and replay the spell side later. This means I need to find MDFCs worth playing, and add Arid Archway.

First on the chopping block, Brass's Tunnel-Grinder. I finally have played this card, and transformed this card, and it was in fact, quite underwhelming. I will try to replace it with Valakut Awakening as it does effectively the same thing and lets me play around with MDFCs.

Notable MDFCs include: Witch Enchanter, Sundering Eruption, Stump Stomp, Kabira Takedown, Bala Ged Recovery, Pinnacle Monk

On a second note, this is a Bracket 3 deck, and I play no game changers on purpose. I like avoiding playing cards that are just generically good in any deck. However, if one were to add any game changers to this list, I would say the following are the best options:

  1. Glacial Chasm

  2. Crop Rotation

  3. Underworld Breach

  4. Literally any other good card
