Minor Changes

ChiefWannaHacka, 13 years ago

Got my hands on an Angel of Serenity, and ran into a wall with some darn combo decks. so to try and combat this I've made some changes.

The Abundance + Rites of Flourishing combo wasn't ever really hitting like I would have thought, so it came out. I had a tough time against combo decks so in went Krosan Grip since it's just the bee's knees. Akroma's Memorial should have been in sooner, as the haste alone is almost back breaking in here. Last, I put in Privileged Position cause there were way too many targeted bounce effects coming my way, and Asceticism isn't enough I feel. Also I added the Realm Razer & Tyrant of Discord for a Tooth and Nail or Defense of the Heart combo.

More bounce, but less creature power

Mogalicous, 13 years ago

Added a lot more bounce to get the focus to something I want it to be. Not sure where the balance I want is going to be, however.

Went to the shop today and made a few changes...

Took out: Peregrine Drake - untaps lands, but expensive and not that heavy Azorius Keyrune Elderwood Scion Enlisted Wurm Steward of Valeron-replaced with Noble Hierarch

Added: Coiling Oracle Noble Hierarch Homeward Path Phyrexian Metamorph Consecrated Sphinx Sensei's Divining Top

-Did pretty well during the EDH league today. Won the first pod with two kills and lost the second pod due to a cheap infinite combo.

After playing around, I think Merfolk Assassin and Piracy Charm do not flow as originally anticipated. It's just a little too clunky. I think that exchanging them for 4 snap and possibly 2 other creatures like Silvergill Adept or Merfolk Looter might make sense.

Added a possible sideboard. Just quickly researched some possible helpful cards. I would greatly appreciate your input and ideas on how to improve the Main deck and the Sideboard. Thanks.

MistaTheDTrain, 13 years ago

I added a Goblin Lackey and a Siege-Gang Commander as well as two Gempalm Incinerators and a Reckless One due to some games I played with it. Also, suffered my worst defeat yet (I've pulled off some nice wins though!) against my friend's (get this...) SPIDER DECK.

Here's how it went: (T=my turn, O=opponent)

T1: Mountain, Goblin Lackey

O1: Forest, Deadly Recluse

T2: Swamp, Frogtosser Banneret

O2: Forest

T3: Mountain, Goblin Warchief

O3: Forest (he's like, dang man...)

T4: Mountain, Krenko, Mob Boss I tapped him, making 4 2/2 goblins. Swung with the 4. Killed the Deadly Recluse and he took 6.

O4: Forest, He tells me: "Dude... I guess I don't know what to do..."

T5: chuckling Swamp, tapped Krenko, made 7 more 2/2s for a total of 10 2/2s. Swung with the Company. But... He lays down an instant (I've forgotten the name) destroying all of my creatures...

O5: Forest, Silklash Spider

...

Anyways, this same process happened TWO OTHER TIMES resulting in me losing a total of 27 goblins and he losing 3 spiders for his Spider Tribal Deck. When I got out my Voracious Dragon (with one creature to sac,) he Windstorms it and finishes me off with the two Silklash Spiders. I almost quit Magic that day.

The deck is looking a lot more like a control deck now. I'd like to fit the the second Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius in there somewhere, probably in an Essence Backlash slot. That card might be terrible.

Major Overhaul

alexsmith21, 13 years ago

Decided Thrax wasn't keeping up with my playgroup so I'm tweaking it to be a more control-heavy build. Since then I have added the following:

-Knowledge Pool -Karn Liberated -Rune-Scarred Demon -Dismiss -Shattering Pulse -Black Sun's Zenith -Blasphemous Act -Standstill -Stranglehold

The point is to add more control to the deck until I can get my combo out and win.

Thank you so much Tappedout community for giving this deck so much attention. It really wouldn't be close to as good as it is without your help. All suggestions will still be appreciated, as there is always room for improvement.

Update

mafteechr, 13 years ago

After going 1-3 yesterday, I made the following changes:

Mainboard:
-2 Raven's Crime
-1 Unearth
+2 Ghastly Demise
+1 Gnaw to the Bone

I needed to gain life more often and another answer to creatures other than Stinkweed Imp (even though the recursion of Imp was amazing).

Because of this change, I needed to switch the side.

Sideboard:
-1 Ghastly Demise
+1 Sandstorm

Played at SNM last night and it went really well.

Game 1: Played against Grixis Control. Mulled to 5 the first round and still won, 2nd round I killed him quickly. He didn't hit me either game. All he could do was slow me a little. 2-0

Round 2: I played against a Naya deck (Resto Angel, Huntermaster, Thragtusk, etc) and while it was close I still won, 2-1.

Round 3: U/W/R Geist deck. It was tough because Geist is super scary. He beat me in the 2nd round due to a Sphinx's Revelation allowing him to stabilize/giving him options, but I won round 3 on turn 5. 2-1

Round 4: Nasty U/W aggro. He wasn't letting Reckless Waif flip, and Stromkirk Noble couldn't get through due to Arbor Elf. Loxodon Smiter is a tough matchup, since I can't kill it with anything other than a Mizzium Mortars. He double Sublime Archangel'd me in the first game, then got her out and paired her with a Wolfir Silverheart turn 5, killing me. I ended up getting his life to 3 both games, but his deck was just too nasty.

Overall, I did a really good job, and I think this deck still has a place in the meta, especially with people maybe gravitating a little more towards Naya and away from U/W flash and Jund.

Changes after first day of testing

reoree, 13 years ago

Main:
-3 Sign in Blood (ended up being bad especially against burn or aggro since we aren't fast enough)
-4 Bloodflow Connoisseur (it just lacks the spike potential of Bloodthrone Vampire and the base stats is hard to justify the costs even if the boost is permenant)
-2 Soulcage Fiend (same as Sign in Blood; also ends up easily dying to pillar which negates the death effect)
-2 Unhallowed Pact (just was too slow; clogged up hands and situational to creatures with counters on them already; otherwise Undying Evil is generally better)

+1 Bump in the Night (great little spell to help shave off the last few chunks of damage for cheap, or a big chunk for more mana)
+3 Altar's Reap (replacing Sign in Blood for less mana restrictive cost, and as a sac outlet since we lost Bloodflow Connoisseur; also has nice combos with Hunger of the Howlpack)
+2 Elvish Visionary (I figured we needed more card draw over the recursion that Unhallowed Pact gave; plus it's a 2 cmc creature for Driver of the Dead to fetch or use undying on; combo with altar's reap for a total of 4 cards drawn!)
+1 Essence Harvest (with aggro decks outspeeding this one, extra life gain or drawing our win con faster helps a lot; but we don't always want to see it because this is situational)
+2 Wild Hunger (basically our other win con, or with 6 mana open it becomes part of our win con once we attack then harvest after pumping to 8 or 9; basically acts as Essence Harvest with no life gain, but increased damage and a nice combat trick)
+2 Bloodhunter Bat (we needed some fliers and life gain in a body; this card gives us both!)

Side:
-1 Bump in the Night (simply got moved to main)
-2 Altar's Reap (simple got moved to main)
-2 Tragic Slip (can't find any at the .01 tix per common stores at the moment)
-2 Bloodhunter Bat (simply got moved to main)
-2 Wild Hunger (simply got moved to main)

+1 Essence Harvest (in case we really need 4)
+2 Sign in Blood (moved from the main; extra card draw if needed; probably best vs control decks)
+2 Bone Splinters (holds the place of tragic slip for now; also acts as sac outlet if needed)
+2 Unhallowed Pact (still probably one of the best ways to reuse undying critters, so it's not taken out completely; may get replaced by undying evil later since Driver of the Dead pretty much does what this card does except for 6 of our guys including himself)
+2 Ulvenwald Bear (a really great card for stacking up the pumps in a single turn; having more of these is good if you need to go a more aggro route; probably would side out Typhoid Rats when putting this guy in)

Notes:
-Don't be afraid to stack counters onto a creature that isn't Bloodthrone Vampire; you can kill people easily with most of your guys as long as you pump them up large enough. Ulvenwald Bear, Hunger of the Howlpack and Wild Hunger will all help you get into lethal range fairly easily by beating them down or following up with multiple Essence Harvest or a Bump in the Night -Use sac oulets wisely! Never let your guys get exiled by a Pillar of Flame or an Annihilating Fire if you can: Driver of the Dead and a sideboard Gravepurge are always there to fetch your critters again :) -Also don't forget the old "block then sac" trick when using things like altar's reap or needing to pump Bloodthrone Vampire so it won't die when blocking. Minimizes damage vs fatties and aggro decks without trample -Don't sac Typhoid Rats when blocking with them (unless you really need to pump or get a morbid trigger), since they literally kill anything and are your best friend against those defender decks (well aside from our win cons)

A milestone

omen37, 13 years ago

I went 3-1 during FNM and placed 5th my best performance so far. I slowed down when I was playing and made moves that affected play on later turns that gave me the victory. The first match I had was a mirror match and we ended up racing the decks in 3 games. The main thing that helped me here was using my burn spells to get rid of his creatures rather than to damage him. This let my creatures run over his life faster than his burn spells could take me down. My second round is the round I lost 2-1 although I don't remember his deck because of some action going on to my side it was a close first and second round and then he stomped me in the 3rd round. My 3rd match up was a fun one where my opponent was playing an all white deck. was able to crush him 2-0 by not letting any of his creatures stay on the board for more than a turn which gave me a huge headstart in both games and let me run over him without to much opposition. My last round was against an Izzet deck and it was a battle. his combinaton of blue counter spells and red burn spells did a good job of keeping me out of the game luckily for me he did not have as many creatures as he needed to finish me off. Once I was able to get a zombie on the field I was able to bring back several gravecrawlers and end the game.

I noticed something about my deck that I am looking to change I have to many 3 drops which messes up my mana curve. I plan on taking out Stromkirk Captain and Murder that way I can get more spells and creatures that have a lower cmc and put in a few more 4 drops that way I can really put pressure on my opponent throughout the match instead of just in the opening few moves and in the mid-range to late game.

General Gaming Changes

JangoMTG, 13 years ago

I have been playing this deck fairly solidly against a number of different decks. It has overall performed well but as is to be expected Boros falls short on the manipulation of gameplay. If it hasn't won by roughly turn 5/6 then I find it is nearly impossible for me to win the game. The only saving grace's in this situation is the Brimstone Volley's and Divine Deflection.

I have thoroughly enjoyed playing this deck. The only real changes has been in numbers and sideboard tech. Added in an Odric, Master Tactician and a couple of Erase's to try and assist in creature heavy decks and Detention Sphere's and other enchantments.

Improvements?

Mameshiba, 13 years ago

Tokens: Gather the Townsfolk is a cheap token maker but do I want to trade it for Entreat the Angels? An evasion weapon but more expensive. Extra Mana: My biggest problem is, I think, extra Mana. Before, when I first made this, I had no cards in hand and 7 mana. Clockwork Dragon (my new favorite artifact) is great and so is the igniter. Card Draw: Like I discussed, I have no cards in hand at times. I have cards ( Howling Mine, Sword of War and Peace ) but I need help please.
