Made some tweaks so the deck operates more effectively when there aren't many creatures to steal. It can just play as a Temur aggro deck. Also beefed up the removal a bit.

Made a few changes based on some great advice (thank you very much for that). The Key to the City, Ammit Eternal, Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons combo in particular was a rather nice addition.

All of your ideas have been helpful so please keep them coming.

Added 2 Feral Prowler 1(G) When Prowler dies, draw a card. 1/3 Sideboarded Mirror Entity and removed Gift of Immortality Added 1 Regal Caracal with one in Sideboard. It is the most expensive cat in the deck, and if it came down to monster-ing up Fleecemane, or casting the Caracal, I'll roll the Fleecemane up. I'll be adding Pride Sovereigns when I get them.

Is This Even the Same Deck Anymore?

TheSpiritombEnthusiast, 8 years ago

Holy crap, where do I begin? So much is different now! Stripped down, streamlined, and faster! Much, much faster! Anyway, let's go over what's different! A lot of the creatures have been stripped down. Only what I feel is essential has been kept. The ramp is now astronomically better! While it still has roughly the same speed as before, it is now much more consistent, as previously the deck was often prone to being at a loss for lands to play. Not so anymore! Additions include Nissa's Renewal, Seething Song, Explosive Vegetation, and Rampant Growth. Other than that, Lightning Bolt makes its triumphant return, at long last! Enjoy, everyone!

Overall 3-2-1 including Top8 Round 1 Lantern Control (2-1) always had bridge never had lantern. Opp Surgicaled my kcommands G1 and G3. Luckily had a stub for bridge in G3. Brought in 3 rejection, stub, 2 surgical, Engineered Explosives. Sided out 3 push 2 terminate 1 thought scour 1 street wraith. Round 2 Living End (0-2) G1 he had 6 cyclers and then casted living end. G2 I think I kept a loose hand of spellbomb steam vents 2 street wraith, snap, tasigur thoughtseize terminate. Anyway never saw 2nd land. Its a really unfavored matchup anyway but probably should have mulliganed to 6. Brought in stub, 2 spellbomb, 2 surgical, terminate. Took out 3 push, electrolyze, 1 scour, 1 thoughtseize. Round 3 Affinity (2-1) G1 stole the game with orni plating attack for 4. Never saw push. Died on Turn 4 would have untapped and Kcommand. G2 flaying tendrils sweeped the game, G3 was a challenge with opponent siding bitterblossom was finally able to make short work with Izzet Staticaster. Brought in 3 rejection, flaying tendrils, Staticaster, ee. Sided out 4 wraith and 2 thoughtseize. Round 4 Mirror (2-0) opponent kept a bad hand in G1 after thoughtseizing. G2 he kept a 4 land hand. Brought in stub, terminate, ee, liliana the last hope, 2 spellbomb. Sided out 4 thoughtseize, 2 inquisition. Round 5 ID with Dredge Top 8 played against Naya Company (0-2) top decked path literally had him dead to rights drew path. G2 got stuck on one land apparently 2 push street wraith watery grave tasigur, snapcaster, terminate. Is not good enough. Also to add salt to the wound he played turn 3 magus of the moon.

Match 1 (Mono-Red Eldrazi): Game 1 - I put some pressure on him early by establishing a Winding Constrictor and protecting it early. He tried to race me a bit but I was easily able to take care of his threats and I was able to get rid of his Thought-Knot Seers and Matter Reshapers without much difficulty and I was able to Grasp his Glorybringer which sealed the game. Game 2 - More or less the same except he sided in more burn but I am maining 4 Blossoming so he couldn't get a foothold against my guys as I chipped away at his life total with Rishkar and Constrictor. He came back with a Reality Smasher but by then it was too late and I was able to remove it with a combination of Walking Ballista and Grasp of Darkness with the small price of discarding my hand to secure the victory. Match 2 (G/B Energy): Game 1 - I ended up keeping a hand with 1 land because the rest of the hand was lit. I would then proceed to draw no lands for the next 2 turns and I am able to fight back a bit but I was so far behind that it was too difficult to keep up after falling behind like that. Sided In - 2 x Gonti, 2 x Bristling, & 1 x Grasp Sided Out - 1 x Gearhulk, 4 x Glint-Sleeve Game 2 - I am able to put the pressure on him as he gets stuck on three lands. I am able to use Gonti to take his Winding Constrictor and he is able to start hitting his land drops but I have answers for all the creatures he is throwing out and I am just so far ahead he concedes. Game 3 - We trade blows a bit getting rid of each threat as they are established until I get to a point where I get him to tap out to deal with my guys as a jam a Gearhulk as an 8/8. So I am able to chip his life total and I am able to get a Constrictor and a Hydra out and he could't get rid of any of my threats and ended up scooping. Match 3 (G/B Energy): Game 1 - Goes a lot like game 3 from the last match where we went back and forth trading blows until I landed an 8/8 gearhulk and rode it into the station. Sided In - 2 x Gonti, 2 x Bristling, & 1 x Grasp Sided Out - 1 x Gearhulk, 4 x Glint-Sleeve Game 2 - I don't think there was a single creature that stuck on the board until turn 5 there was so much removal and asset denial that it was hard to establish a foothold. I was able to land a Bristling Hydra and protect it with a Blossoming Defense so I could get the energy. After that it was hard for him to get his engine going for him as I was able to remove his threats and make him make some pretty awful blocks and eventually I was able to overpower him. 3 Stars of the Game: Blossoming Defense - Right after bumping this card up to 4 I was not dissapointed as this card was an absolute monster all day. It was able to protect my guys and was often the reason I could turn unfavorable board states around or reinforce my own board state. Fatal Push - Absolute legend today getting rid of some huge threats unconditionally and providing me with strong and unconditional removal. All-Star today but I might have to revisit this card once Hour of Devastation becomes legal. Verdurous Gearhulk - The true star today, most games today were won by being able to stick him to the board and just hoping he was enough to get there. And today he was enough. Proving today why he is my favorite Gearhulk of the cycle.

With Ramunap Excavator essentially being a second Crucible of Worlds, I have decided to add both in and increase the focus on land sacrifice and recursion. And while I was at it, I revisited some of the cards and made slight adjustments. Each card swap is explained below:

  • Desert of the Indomitable replaces Vivid Grove. In a two-color deck like this one, Vivid lands are essentially strictly worse than two-color taplands, which are already bad. This deck is very low on card advantage, and the Desert's cycling ability helps with that. The land recursion effects allow it to still be useful later.
  • Ramunap Excavator replaces Precursor Golem. The Golem ties into the minor theme of token artifacts, which comes up rarely in practice since it's unrelated to the commander. Excavator's ability helps getting landfall triggers, which has a bigger payoff in this deck.
  • Elemental Bond replaces Horn of Greed. Card advantage is mainly needed in the late game, at which point the Bond is better, since every land drop is also a 5/5. It's also not a symmetrical effect, which is a big advantage in multiplayer games.
  • Crucible of Worlds replaces Life from the Loam. A one-time effect versus a continuous effect that essentially does the same thing. The mill provided by the dredge ability is not relevant in this deck.
  • Gamble replaces Ring of Three Wishes. This is only usable once instead of thrice, but the reduced cost of one mana instead of ten is worth it. Like Mangara's Tome, this card is mainly used to find Parallel Lives/Doubling Season or Crucible of Worlds/Ramunap Excavator, depending on which is needed more: lands or payoffs.
  • Command Beacon replaces Thespian's Stage. Stage doesn't do much since I decided not to include Dark Depths in this deck, and the ability to cast Omnath without the commander tax is a useful effect, especially when it's repeatable thanks to the land recursion effects.

Reverted Changes From Previous Update

DimirAgent8, 8 years ago

Hazoret's Undying Fury isn't even worse Mind's Desire. Removed them from list and put back Thought Scours. This card is bad in almost every situation I can think of. If you fizzle with it you're screwed, if you use it as another spell you would usually win off a cantrip anyways, if you use it as a pseudo-tutor chances are you will wiff anyways. The card is not a good fit for this deck, that's all there is to it.

I just recently got my hands on a Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and I was thinking of putting him in here but I'm not sure what to remove! He is an amazing card on his own and I can cheat him I early but he doesn't have an ETB effect to abuse with Meren. He also is extremely oppressive and no one likes playing against him. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Another card I was thinking of adding is Filigree Familiar. He is basically Solemn Simulacrum's pet dog. I'm not sure what to remove for him either.

One card I was contemplating removing for over of these is Hermit Druid. He is best in combo decks and since I'm running basics he ous extremely inconsistent. He can put 50 cards in the yard or he can put 1. Let me know what you think.

All comments are greatly appreciated, don't forget to +1 If you haven't yet. Thanks!

Back to the future - Updated list

MTGO has finally added a multiplayer EDH format that follows the official banned list. This means we can go back to playing sol ring, mana crypt, and all that broken stuff that makes EDH unique. My current list is very similar to the previous one without broekn mana rocks. Kept snow-covered lands, removed scrying sheets (too damn slow), added broken rocks back to the menu, and have started testing Sandstone Oracle. So far, I've been pretty happy with it, specially now that we can run broken rocks and workshop.

Life is good. You know you have a fun deck when you get a spike player like me to give up playing top tier decks. Deck is very unique and I've never seen anyone playing anything similar to it on MTGO. I think it's becoming my signature deck now.

Volt Charge is gone, and has been replaced with two more copies of Harrow. Hopefully it's a little faster now! Hydra Broodmaster is also gone, and has been replaced with two more copies of Protean Hydra. It's token producing ability was simply not enough to justify spending mana to use it.
