"Trigger Happy" (Yarok, the Desecrated)

Commander / EDH BUG (Sultai)

Chalupacabra

The deck has a heavy landfall theme and can win through a few different combos and interactions. Some notable cards and combos:

  • Any one of AEther Adept, Man-o'-War, Sedraxis Alchemist, or Cavern Harpy all have an interesting interaction with Yarok in that we can use them to bounce both themselves and a permanent of our choice back to our/opponent's hand, letting us repeat ETB effects, keep something off the board for the cost of 3 mana a turn (with the exception of the Harpy), or the most useful combo in the deck: any of these bouncers plus Peregrine Drake. Tap five lands, play Peregrine Drake. Two triggers of "untap five lands" go on the stack. Let one resolve, tap the lands, then let the other resolve and tap the lands again. You have 10 mana floating. Play one of our bouncers for 2 or 3 mana to return both itself and Peregrine Drake to our hand, leaving 7 or 8 mana floating. Use 5 of it to re-play Peregrine Drake and repeat the entire process for infinite mana. We can use that mana to cast a Torment of Hailfire or a Villainous Wealth that we can use to cast something worthy of infinite mana to win the game.
  • Zendikar's Roil and Risen Reef are both great cards, but together they create an interesting interaction, especially with Yarok. With Zendikar's Roil on the field you play either Risen Reef or play a land to trigger the Roil. Risen Reef triggers twice and you look at the top card of your library, then either put it out if it is a land or put it into your hand. Then repeat the trigger. For each land that you put out this way, Zendikar's Roil triggers twice, which in turn will put four Risen Reef triggers on the stack. You repeat this process as much as you want, although be very careful unless you want to draw your entire library (which is not a bad thing to do). To stop the loop, simply put all cards in your hand instead of playing any lands, but be aware that the Reef triggers grow fourfold with every land you play, so accumulating triggers happens faster than you think.
  • Although Mystic Snake and Frilled Mystic can be used to counter two spells (something you don't have to do super often), they are both creatures and so are great targets to bounce with creatures like Aether Adept for later re-play, or for blinking with Deadeye Navigator.
  • Fierce Empath is a great tutor, letting us grab two value targets or combo pieces like Deadeye Navigator, Agent of Treachery if we want to start stealing things, Rampaging Baloths for an army of 4/4s or Avenger of Zendikar for an army of plants, Noxious Gearhulk or Phyrexian Ingester if we need some removal, Ancient Greenwarden if we want to add more landfall triggers, or just simply miscellaneous value targets like Prime Speaker Zegana, Sire of Stagnation, or Soul of the Harvest for card draw, Progenitor Mimic for reliable ETBs, or Ulvenwald Hydra for two lands and a big beater.
  • I don't see Wild Pair played in many Yarok decks, just ~375 on EDHRec, which is criminal since he'll double its trigger and you get to go grab up to two extra creatures to plonk onto the battlefield every time you play one.
  • Mold Shambler doesn't show up at all for Yarok on EDHRec, which is also a shame since it can remove any noncreature permanent, including things like Lands and Planeswalkers. Yeah, it'll cost you 6 mana to play and kick it, but you get to destroy two things. Bounce it back to hand and you have a reusable removal piece that's going to come in handy. If you have infinite mana and a bouncer, you can just play and bounce this repeatedly and destroy everything but your opponents' creatures.
