Nice list! Mizzix is the ultimate control commander in EDH, and one of the few who can truly seize control of the game. And X-spells are absolutely the way to go! Have you thought about any proliferate cards? Steady Progress, Fuel for the Cause, and Tezzeret's Gambit directly increase your experience counters, which is fabulous. I also love tutoring in the deck since I usually win with Reiterate and Turnabout, so Solve the Equation and Invert / Invent are amazing newer tutors, and there is also still good old Mystical Tutor as well. If you're interested my deck is here- Mizzix puts the "X" in Excellence!. I haven't written a primer on it yet or promoted it much, but I have kept it updated with cards as new sets come out and it performs well.

Hey! You've given a suggestion on one of my decks, so I've thought I could return the favor. :)

I'm not sure how casual/competitive this deck is aimed to be, so I will give suggestions for both.

For a more competitive deck, I'd suggest:

The first three help you create disgusting solitaire turns while the last one may be the easiest win with Mizzix there is.

For a more casual deck, I'd suggest:

General card suggestions:

Mizzix's Mastery, Epic Experiment, Chaos Warp, Commit / Memory, Volcanic Vision, Invert / Invent, Prophetic Bolt, Frantic Search, Pore Over the Pages, Rewind, Solve the Equation and once again Bonus Round (this card is seriously good)

Also, I invite you to have a look at my old Mizzix deck and/or my up-to-date Zaffai deck for some inspiration.

I'm sorry for the long comment in case you didn't wish for suggestions. Just wanted to help. :^)

Spirits on Mizzix, the Storm EDH

So it's been testing turn 6-8 as-is, seems a bit slow, mostly because of the need to have Mizzix of the Izmagnus on board to facilitate several combos.

Also having a mana issue (I wouldn't have thought), as all the ramp e.g. Seething Song give me .

I've found Dualcaster Mage + Twinflame is faster, but needs .

Jeweled Lotus has tested very well, it's a T1 Mizzix of the Izmagnus with any colored land!

Mox Opal hasn't activated on occasion, I'll do an analysis and provide the Mox Opal discussion/statistics like my Kaalia of the Vast deck has.

It's been suggested (Thanks to zobbe#5625 on discord) that Thassa's Oracle isn't necessary because if we mill our entire library, it's probably a win for us anyway within thinks like Past in Flames or an Underworld Breach. So I'm working on getting one to test, update coming soon. Probably needs a Wheel of Fortune to support it.

I also need an Intuition still to replace Teferi, Master of Time. Muddle the Mixture could be an easier include, and still evaluating the Invert / Invent option as well.

Jeska's Will maybe to get more if I keep Dualcaster Mage + Twinflame or perhaps a Dockside Extortionist that's also a reasonable target for Twinflame and can go Infinite with Capsize.

More to come as testing goes. I'll make some hard changes here pretty soon as well.

Tyondai on Budget Mizzix Storm [~$150 Competitive EDH]

hi Nawg and Klapp

I've been playing this deck for 1.5 years now and i've played all kinds of variations, ranging from 50$ builds, to 300$ to budgetless. I'm also the same one that pomegranatas mentions in his december 2019 narset's reversal update.

Most of the things klap mentions are good advice, except for one: cutting pirate's pillage. I've made an account on this site just to talk about this one :p

Pirate's Pillage is a very important card in the deck, especially if you start upgrading a bit with cards like underworld breach. Upgrading this deck shifts some of it's wincons in to red instead of blue (seriously, one of the first things to cut is enter the infinite imo). When using more red wincons (breach, electrodominance, grapeshot) at first glance, pirate's pillage seems very mediocre, everything it does, other cards do better. However, there is no single card that does it all and there's something it does that no other card can.

    • discard a card: not always that relevant
    • draw two cards: nice
    • create two treasures

now, those treasure might give you the idea that this card is a mediocre ritual at best, only netting you 1 mana if you have 3 exp counters. It's not just two mana, it's two mana of any color. No red card in our deck can turn the huge amount of red mana we can make in to blue (i'll get back to this later). One other important thing to mention is that, prior to the printing of Jeska's Will we didn't have any true sorcery speed rituals. With pirate's pillage being a sorcery, you can use Invert / Invent to tutor Reiterate and pillage, which combo's nicely if you have 3 red mana. the treasures pay for the reiterate, you draw cards until you hit something nice. It's very similar to some of the Frantic Search lines, except, that's an instant.

For example if you hit Mind's Desire continue reiterating pirate's pillage until you are satisfied with your storm count and use the remaining 2 treasures to cast mind's desire. Or, draw cards until you have 2 instant speed red rituals, cast one, reiterate the second for infinite storm and finish with Brain Freeze (you still have 1 treasure) or Grapeshot.

Are those the best and/or most efficient combo lines in the deck? No, but they present themselves often, are primarily red based so you can keep blue open for counters. This deck is all about storming on the fly, making it up as you go, and Pirate's Pillage fits nicely in to that playstyle.

I agree on cutting Reality Spasm, i'm replacing it with Jeska's Will

If you do add Underworld Breach, do not cut Pieces of the Puzzle! It can pay the escape cost for itself and thus is great for filling your graveyard with other stuff. Also, Brain Freeze is a must if you're playing breach. we're the only deck that can easily combo of breach + lotus petal because we only need to pay U for Brain Freeze.

Rhystic Study is a great card, won't argue on that one. However, think about your meta (speed?) and your playstyle before adding this 3 mana enchantment. no cost reduction, no immediate draw, doesn't combo with anything in our deck and you get no exp counters from casting it. I have tried it and except for in opening hands, i always wished i drew an other card.

Some changes I've made to my deck include:

  • cut Aetherflux Reservoir or Sentinel Tower and add Grapeshot: we can not recur or tutor artifacts. Infinite storm isn't that uncommon in this deck so grapeshot (or brain freeze) works just fine.

  • cut Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time: Both are good cards, especially in the 100$ list. I cut them more because i don't like delve interfering with past in flames or underworld breach later and DTD is double blue. I think i replaced them with Silundi Vision  Flip and Valakut Awakening  Flip

  • Electrodominance: this thing awesome. Combo's nicely with bonus round (what doesn't?). Mind's desire at instant speed for RR? yes please. Instant speed underworld breach in someone else's turn, why not. Again, not the best finisher but with infinite mana, X=10.000, copy it or recast it.

  • Muddle the Mixture: as pomegranates points out, the 100$ deck doesn't run enough 2 cmc cards to make it vaible. however if you start adding underworld breach, electrodominance, grapeshot, brain freeze. those are all tutorable wincons now, especially breach, which we can't tutor any other way. don't cut a counter for this, it's a tutor.

If you want to further upgrade this deck to semi budgetless, perhaps with a dockside/clone/bounce package, more wheels/hullbreacher or breach and lion's eye diamond. It doesn't work. I would recommend looking at Riele if you want to stay in Izzet, or go grixis.

Np :)

That's fair. It's kind of an all in strategy. As far as making it consistent, I've just leaned into the spells theme and some other copy effects.

I've found mine to be very successful. While TYS can't be tutored for, I've stumbled into a combo with bonus round, ghostly flicker, and mystic sanctuary to draw the deck with omnath. If needed, Invert / Invent gets both spell pieces.

Other times, I end up just drawing a bunch of cards with Omnath and other effects, and I just find it. Once it gets going it's not hard go off from there with things like frantic search, skyshroud claim, crop rotation, mythos, etc.

Have you ever considered Reality Spasm as a combo piece (fits snugly into the 2 mana slot of Firemind's Foresight) or Invert / Invent as a tutor?

Also, think it's worth running Flux Channeler to proliferate experience counters while Mizzix is unavaible

Firemind's Foresight is also a better tutor than Invert / Invent since while costing more it grabs 3 instant / sorcery spells so unless you are keeping it in there to search for a board wipe then I feel like it is something you could swap.
