Losing matches but still winning games, always a process.

Deck is fun, it's critical not to miss triggers. Have made adjustments to make the deck more efficient. Took out Kiora and Ajani, as i feel they don't contribut much to winning, and don't do enough in this deck to stabilize when behind.

Have added Golgari Charm to the main, the card is really powerful right now, as all 3 uses are relevant. Also forgot about Putrefy replacing Downfall, much easier for this deck to cast. Went up to a full 4 of Detention Sphere and an idea from another person running an enchantment brew, jamming an Angel of Serenity.

I have decided to focus on counter and regeneration build. I would love any tips to help modify my deck into this style. Does this style even work? let me know!

First FNM for this deck!

The night went surprisingly well for me using this deck for the first time. I went 4-1 and placed 4th overall. Although this deck is very good against MBD, I was very happy I didn't have to deal with it because it's just a boring match.

Match 1: Went 2-0 against a Simic Midrange deck running around Kiora, the Crashing Wave and Clone. First game, Kiora went ultimate because I couldn't draw into a blue mana in time to get rid of it, but with Imposing Sovereign slowing down the krakens and eventually getting an island for some removal, I was able to finish it up by chipping away with Lyev Skyknight. The first game took about 25 minutes. The second game was a rough one for my opponent. I had a perfect curvature and took everything off his board, hitting for 0-2-4-6-8 for a turn 5 win, so the second match only took 3 minutes.

Match 2: Went 2-1 against Mono Green Monsters. This deck truly frightened me, due to the fact that it is just as fast as mine. Game 1 was a very clean game where we just took turns hitting eachother with some things, until I got some removal and gained the upper hand. Game 2 was pretty gross as he played Burning-Tree Emissary into Burning-Tree Emissary into Arbor Colossus on turn 4 and used an Aspect of Hydra on his tusker to hit me for a living crap ton on the same turn. Game 3 I slowed down his board with Imposing Sovereign and Eidolon of Rhetoric. He played some big creatures and thought he had it, but I used Reprisal on both and got in with a Soldier of the Pantheon equipped with a Godsend.

Match 3: Went 0-2 against Golgari. He mainboarded Golgari Charm which hurt me some, but the real killer was bestowing Spiteful Returned on creatures with evasion. I may have gone 1-2, but long before the ending of one game, I stupidly attacked Vraska with a 2/1 instead of him, and he had 2 life left before he got out his Whip of Erebos.

Match 4: Went 2-0 against Naya Hexproof. This was my friend's deck and I truly thought from our past games that he would win it due to how much targeting I have to do, but game 1 he only had Fleecemane Lion and the Selesnya Charm tokens to attack me with, so I got rid of them and chipped him to death. Game 2 I sideboarded in more Celestial Flare and 2 Glaring Spotlight, making me able to keep his board under control while I chipped.

Match 5: Went 2-1 against Naya Midrange. Game 1 was absolutely horrid for me. I mulligan'd to 4, and was stuck on 1 land, needless to say I was stomped. Game 2 I curved out more properly and banished all of his big creatures that came into play tapped and finished with Godsend on a Lyev Skyknight again. Game 3 I played a turn 1 Pithing Needle on Domri Rade to which my opponent looked at his hand and replied "Well... That's unfortunate." I played a Banisher Priest (Which he eventually killed) on his Boros Reckoner and 2 Spirit of the Labyrinth and eventually got a Godsend on the board. Later in the game I was able to attack with a Spirit for 6, re-equip Godsend for the defense and wait for the next turn. He Revoke Existence'd my Godsend, but there was another in my hand that I could play and equip on the same turn, so I hit him for the game.

My first FNM with this deck went very well.

1st Round: vs a mono black deck. 1-2 his favor Match 1: The start of FNM didn't get a very good start. He was running 4 Thoughtseize and 4 Lifebane Zombie to ultimately lock me down in the first round. I was barely able to get anything more than Elvish Mystic out before I had lost. Match 2: He was running heavy control on me but this time I was able to get out an Arbor Colossus and keep him alive with Mortal's Resolve and Ranger's Guile. Eventually swinging for game. Match 3: Same thing as first game. He locked my hand down from turn 1 and was unable to recover.

2nd Round: vs a black/white heroic deck 2-0 my favor Match 1: This was a little better. He unfortunately didn't have any control in his deck. Was mostly based around getting Fabled Hero and the dude that makes you sack. Though he was able to get a big creature I would be able to block all day with Nylea, God of the Huntuntil I got big enough to win. Match 2: Same thing as first. This match lasted slightly longer due to him making me sack my creatures but I was able to eventually get Garruk, Caller of Beasts to draw out a portion of my deck and play the creatures I wanted/needed.

3rd Round: vs a mono red burn deck 2-0 my favor Match 1: To start I'm not 100% sure I know what his deck did but he had a lot of burn spells and a few creatures. I was lucky to have 2 Burning-Tree Emissary in my hand to turn 3 a Kalonian Hydra then turn 4 Mistcutter Hydra for the win. Match 2: Was able to get out an early Garruk, Caller of Beasts and take the game with some huge dudes.

4th Round: vs a Red/Green Hydra deck 2-0 my favor Match 1: His deck was putting a delay on mine since he was getting out big hydra's just as I was which were normally equal in strength. The one thing I noticed though is he wasn't running any creatures with trample and definitely not more than 1 Nylea, God of the Hunt. I was just able to chump block his creatures until I got creatures big enough to finally overcome him. Match 2: A rather close match. He had gotten me down to 7 before I started making a come back. His deck popped off a little faster than mine due to not having an Elvish Mystic in my starting hand. I was able to eventually get out Garruk, Caller of Beasts which was the game winner ultimately because he got me my chump blockers and my winning creatures.

If you have any questions or recommendations for my deck let me know! I also would like to add for this FNM I did take out an Arbor Colossus and Worldspine Wurm for the 2 Polukranos, World Eaters. He seemed a lot more helpful which ended up being true. Thanks!

Deck went 3-1-1 in a group of 20~ players.

Game 1: Boros Burn. 1-2. This was my first time playing against Boros Burn but the deck itself is very straightforward and I had expected most of the cards that were being played. The main card that worried me was Chandra's Phoenix because of its inherent recursion but I caught it with Syncopate a few times. The game I won was with Stormbreath dragon. Since the deck cannot 1-for-1 this card without Mizzium Mortars, Warleader's Helix, or Banishing Light, it makes it hard for the deck to play against it. Still wasn't able to race it fast enough, even with my durable creatures. I remember siding out Mizzium Mortars in this match up and ended up siding in Ral Zarek (when I had him in the list)

Game 2: Mono Red Devotion. 2-1. This list was piloted by someone younger in an earlier generation. He seemed to have a good grasp on Magic, however, so I wouldn't discount his ability to play. He explained to me that the deck was budget because of the small "allowance" he would get from his parents. Either way, he did get me pretty good on game two with a rush of Burning-Tree Emissary and Fanatic of Mogis. In the end, I out-controlled his board state and he was never able to get the devotion going on the other two games.

Game 3: Rakdos Aggro: 2-0. A list I have played once against before, but have not seen in a while. Rakdos Aggro tended to be very fast, however the mana base seemed to be too unstable to fully support all of the cards. The list curved out at Whip of Erebos and Stormbreath Dragon. He explained to me that he ran the whip because he found that if the game dragged on to the mid to late game, he would run out of "ammo" and found that reanimating his big creatures like Stormbreath Dragon or something dangerous like Spike Jester would help him out-sustain and just win against his opponent.

Game 4: America Control. 2-0. This match was an interesting one. Because my list runs more counterspells (9) I had a better control over when my opponent was able to cast game-winning spells like Sphinx's Revelation and AEtherling. My biggest issue here was Detention Sphere. It was hard to deal with all of the removal that targeted my planeswalkers, a primary form of card draw since I couldn't keep up with him if I kept Dictate of Kruphix in the deck. I ended up winning the second game with Ral Zarek's ult, and it definitely felt amusing to have that go off.

Game 5: Draw into top 8

My last game was against Orzhov Control. The main problems I had here were Desecration Demon and Elspeth, Sun's Champion. I was also caught off-guard by an Obzedat, Ghost Council. I need better removal or to save my Turn // Burns for Desecration demon and Obzedat while saving Fated Conflagration and Pithing Needle for Elspeth.

Post FNM changes.

-2 Ral Zarek +2 Pithing Needle

I will try this build next week. With such a good defense against planeswalkers I shouldn't run into any trouble with any Ajani or Elspeth. My main worry now is the amount of Naya Hexproof that has been showing up around the shop. The deck would probably just wreck this list if I can't get an Anger of the Gods off in the early game.

Casual Play Update

TelleoStar, 9 years ago

Tested this deck against a blue/black mill control deck, won in a close match.

Sanguine Bond was the game winner for me - I needed to pay mana to attack, but by using the Vampire Nighthawk for lifelink, I was able to deal double damage. The final blow came when my opponent was at 9 life, and I had 15 cards remaining in my library, due to heavy milling from Hedron Crab and Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. My removal had been effective in limiting the mill, but not in stopping it. I was able to resolve Debt to the Deathless for four damage, which became eight through the Sanguine Bond. I survived the next turn's mill with one card remaining in my library, and the following turn I finished the game by activating Underworld Coinsmith for the final damage.

32 people tonight. Hottest games of magic ever. Literally 100*F in the game hall. only brought in Eidolon of Blossoms and Plummet from the sideboard tonight.

Round 1 Mirror match G/W Hexproof 2 - 0

GAME1: he said "who ever gets the most Ethereal Armor wins. I had 2 of them on a Gladecover Scout turn 3. My opponent was so right.

GAME2: we both had a good amount early and midgame back and forth with lifegain attacks. iIn the end, he didn't include any Ajani's or have Eidolon of Blossoms in his build, whilei had one of each out in play which put my deck over the top in the late game.

Round 2 Mono Black Devotion 2 - 1

GAME1: got eaten alive by a Nightveil Specter. stole all my land. never saw a second white mana source and was left with a hand of double white cards.

GAME2: saw he pulled quite a few cards out to sideboard, so i brought in all 4 Eidolon of Blossoms again and the 2 Plummet. wow, Plummet out of the sideboard is incredible, and served me well all night. got to use both on his 2 Desecration Demon and it felt so good to not be playing Black for a change. a copy of both Ajani's sealed the deal.

GAME3: Kept the same cards despite him sideboarding again. he mulled down to four, but i let him take 5 anyway. won very quickly when my Witchstalker outpaced his turn 2 Pack Rat plan after Thoughtseize took my Gladecover Scout.

Round 3 Dimir... MIdrange... control?? idk 2 - 1

GAME1: took this one easily with turn 1 glavecover scout aginst his hand full of dead removal. gg

GAME2: Lost this one due to 3x Psychic Strike and a 2 Dissolve. pure counter magic at it's best, and then a beatdown from Mutavault and Omenspeaker.

GAME3: He didn't find as many counters this game, and this decks top end with Eidolon of Blossoms + Ajani, Mentor of Heroes took it away again.

Round 4 Boros Aggro/Burn 2 - 0

GAME1: he got screwed on 2 Plains plus a Spirit of the Labyrinth

GAME2: he attacked for 3 turns with 2 Legion Loyalist and burned me to face a few times. Didn't matter though. turn 2 Bassara Tower Archer. turn 3 Unflinching Courage. turn 4 bestow Eidolon of Countless Battles. turn 5 Ethereal Armor - 3 ajani, calller of the pride. gg.

It really was nearly 100*F in there. oi. Got #2nd place with an opp win % of 80.1. #1 had a opp win % at a staggering 88.7. Took home some packs and a cool shiny looking Tormented Hero. notable pulls were my 3rd Ajani, Caller of the Pride, Mana Confluence, and my 1st King Macar, the Gold-Cursed even though he's not really that great, but you gotta love the king midas homage, and Gild on a stick is pretty appealing.

in the end, 1 Hexproof creature equipped to the teeth is amazingly effective in the current meta it seems. That guy playing G/W hexproof? His only game losses were to me. Yes G/W Hexproof is a real thing. And i'm rather upset i didn't face a single Devour Flesh among 2 black deck. even if i did, Aegis of the Gods will shut that down.

MVP of the Night: Ajani, Mentor of Heroes

Honorable mention: Eidolon of Blossoms from the sb

Weakest card of the night: Ajani's Presence it has the potential to be a blowout card in midrange matchups, but i didn't cast it once all night. going to replace it with Kruphix's Insight

Excellent outcome! 4-0-1 (split for 1st, since the other guy wanted to go to the dealer's hall before it closed). Very happy with how I played. Round 1: vs. Jund Midrange (2-0) Round 2: vs. Rakdos Aggro (2-0) Round 3: vs. America Nivix Cyclops (2-0) Round 4: vs. Monoblack Devotion (2-0) Round 5: would have been vs. Bant Control, outcome unknown.
