Spellheart Chimera Discussion

Boza on Spellcasters Pets

Well, at the very least, you should include 4 Spellheart Chimera and amybe even some numbers of Thing in the Ice  Flip to increase your wincons.

You have a few counterspells, but if they land a creature with more than 3toughness, you are in trouble. Try to diversify your answers - have some more ways to answer things on the board.

Hyperalgialysis on Bolas Control

You need to add more control elements to make it run smoother, you have a decent amount, but it needs some sweepers like Anger of the Gods Languish or AEtherize. Disallow is going to be better than Cancel, but if you don't want to spend the money on it Scatter to the Winds, Void Shatter, Dissolve, Dissipate and Counterflux are all cheaper upgrades. Upgrade your mana base as you can, you could easily start by adding a few of the cycle dual lands or the battle for zendikar ones, then get Dragonskull Summit. I also like Foreboding Ruins and Choked Estuary, especially if you focus more on swamps. To help get bolas in play faster, Talisman of Indulgence and Talisman of Dominance are 2 drop mana rocks that work well in your colors. I would drop all your creatures and go more spell heavy, maybe making room for some Spellheart Chimera or Enigma Drake since you would increase your spell count. You can also run things like Sea Gate Oracle and Augury Owl to set up your draws. Consult the Necrosages is better than Brainbite. Slave of Bolas and Elder Mastery should be replaced with Dark Intimations. Drop Throne of the God-Pharaoh as well since you arent making tokens to benefit from it. Another decent creature to put in would be Noxious Gearhulk since it removes a creature. Duress and Blightning are also really good, as well as Negate and Barter in Blood.

Enigma Drake, Spellheart Chimera, and counterspelling the opponents token producers

Keranos, God of Storms and Monastery Siege might be good ways to see some extra cards here without giving your opponents any advantage - and also Pull from Tomorrow.

Invoke the Firemind might be a cool draw/burn spell to test, as well.

I wonder if it'd be fun to play Spellheart Chimera or Nivix Cyclops + Teleportal in this deck.

Have fun playing!

I'll answer your questions of what to cut/how many with a sample template of a budget friendly way I would build a deck like this. Also, if you ever decide you want to get a bit more competitive, Jeskai Tempo/Control (can't get the link to work, but you can find it on mtggoldfish.com) would absolutely be the deck for you (although it's reeeaallly expensive).

Creatures

4x Monastery Swiftspear

4x Thing in the Ice  Flip

4x Enigma Drake (Doesn't have trample, but is out of bolt range. Testing would have to decide if Spellheart Chimera is better or not.)

3x Goblin Electromancer (I haven't playtested this any, thus I'm unsure if a playset of cost reducers are necessary)

Instants/Sorceries

4x Opt

3x Serum Visions

4x Lightning Bolt

2x Electrolyze

2x Negate (Left it at two because it can't counter creatures)

4x Mana Leak

3x Remand

2x Izzet Charm

Lands

4x Sulfur Falls (forgot to suggest this one)

3x Wandering Fumarole

6x Mountain

7x Island

Caaarrlll can seem my Mana curve being an issue. Im grateful for the input. If i may, i'll go down your list and comment on each suggestion.

Note: im relatively nee to Magic, only been playing for a couple years casually. I'm not expecting this deck to go to tournaments, its mostly casual, something for me to have fun and fuck with other people with. I probably shoulda made this clearer. My bad.

Remand Good cheap counter with draw power. Considered.

Mana Leak Strong counter for 2, What should I replace with it?

Negate Practically the definitive Blue Counter. What to swap out to put it in?

Logic Knot I saw and considered it. Im bad at deciding between cards, though.

Lightning Bolt Cheap, Strong, versatile. I like.

Electrolyze Nice burn/Draw.

I want to try to keep it down to 2 colors. Im learning that still. Im normally mono-color.

Monastery Swiftspear Good turn one with solid ramp. Ive seen it in action.

Enigma Drake is already in my deck, unless you think i need 4x?

Spellheart Chimera I saw this one but forgot it when building the deck somehow.

Snapcaster Mage i saw him, money will probably be an issue tho...

Stormchaser Mage another i saw and considered. Im unsure when it comes to deckbuilding.

Goblin Electromancer i picked for cheap curve and draw chance. Baral seems fun tho.

Thing in the Ice  Flip how have I not seen this before?

Kiln Fiend seems fun.

Serum Visions 1 drop draw, and scry 2?! How is that legal?!

Opt sounds strong. Ixalan, right?

Sleight of Hand man that's old, its legal?

Izzet Charm oh crap how could i forget those?! Definitely finding room for them somewhere.

Im not sure how to feel on these 2 Land Searches. Life sacrifice for immediate search. As stated, not super competitive, so im not scared of letting my mana lands come in tapped.

Same story with Spirebluff Canal.

I like that Ability on Wandering Fumarole tho.

So first and foremost, you really need to lower your curve. Spells costing 4 should be the most expensive spells in the deck, but honestly I wouldn't go past 3 mana unless you want to run something like Cryptic Command. If you really like the idea of bouncing spells back at your opponent, then go for it. But I would recommend just cutting out the middle-man and running counters, burn, and creatures. Here are some recommendations:

Counters

Remand

Mana Leak

Negate

Logic Knot (Though this one may not go very well with something like Enigma Drake)

Spell Pierce

Burn

Lightning Bolt

Electrolyze

If you ever decide to add white, Lightning Helix is great

Lava Spike (if you want to go heavy on the burn)

Creatures

Monastery Swiftspear

Enigma Drake seems solid

Spellheart Chimera is a smaller Drake with trample

Snapcaster Mage is a must in any control deck as long as money isn't an issue

Stormchaser Mage may be good

Baral, Chief of Compliance seems better than Goblin Electromancer, but he's legendary

Thing in the Ice  Flip

Kiln Fiend can be fun

Cantrips

Serum Visions

Opt

Sleight of Hand

Izzet Charm (goes in like three of these categories)

Lands

Fetches like Flooded Strand and Scalding Tarn are the same story as Snapcaster Mage

Steam Vents

Spirebluff Canal

Wandering Fumarole

These are just suggestions to make the deck a bit more streamlined, but you're welcome to go your own way with it. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Boza on U/R Thermo-Alchemist budget

So, without going too much out of budget, you need to do several things to improve this:

  • Play more copies of certain cards - increases chances of drawing the right ones.

  • Optimize the gameplan of the deck to serve the goal better.

Number one is obvious how to do, but we need to figre out the second one first.

4 Thermo-Alchemist is the obvious inclusion. We need to increase the number of these effects, so in go 4 Firebrand Archer and why not 4 Gelectrode. We want to have a good balance of creatures so 6 copies of Enigma Drake and Spellheart Chimera can prove useful.

That gives us 18 creatures. A deck like this with low curve and card draw needs no more than 20 lands. So, there is space for 22 instants and sorceries.

Now, we want to get the most out of spells we cast. Getting 4 Lightning Bolt is an essential upgrade me thinks. Additionally, we want cheaper draw - 4 Opt is good card filtering and 4 Faithless Looting or even Thought Scour (budget opton) will help a lot. The best draw spell for this deck is Take Inventory. For the other 6 slots, choose a suite of counters and burn spells to your liking, the cheaper the better.

Keep in mind this is just an idea, but hit me up with any questions.
