Aim

Scion of the Ur-Dragon lets you find the answer (in dragon form) to win the games, however it leaves what it finds in the graveyard.

As such the best way to capitalize on this is to reanimate the threats/answers that have been found, effectively making the curated graveyard an extension of your hand. This provides the benefit of not only having increased card selection but also cost reduction as reanimation spells are significantly easier to cast than the dragons they are reanimating.

Given reanimating dragons from the graveyard is a key feature in the deck, cards that provide a way to go from library to graveyard are also beneficial e.g. Faithless Looting, Smuggler's Surprise, Sultai Ascendancy, etc.

Given Scion is 5 colours a large proportion of the mana base is centred around colour fixing, some of which actually aids getting dragons into the graveyard such as Mulch and Grisly Salvage.

Once set up with Scion, some of the answers cards to common threats include:

Balefire Dragon: Remove an opponent's board presence.

Atarka, World Render: Win quickly via commander damage.

Tyrant's Familiar: Targeted removal.

Dragonlord Silumgar: Gain control of a threat.

Hellkite Tyrant: Gain control of artifact ramp, equipment or abilities.

Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm: Double things up.

Nicol Bolas: Card denial.

Numot, the Devastator: Land denial.

The Ur-Dragon: Draw, cheat out dragons and lots of damage.

Sarkhan Vol looks kinda underpowered in this deck besides being a haste enabler. The ultimate doesn't even seem that great in this deck. Both Sarkhan the Mad as a finisher and value play or Sarkhan Unbroken for Lolz seem like better options.

Also Dragon Mage is amazing when you power out a quick dragon or have a bunch of uncastable dragons sitting in your hand.

Sol Ring Because Sol Ring. Even in a five color deck like this Sol Ring is still amazing.

And then maybe a mana doubler. Mana Reflection, Zendikar Resurgent or Mirari's Wake allow for some crazy turns.

This looks great though. Semblance Anvil is a neat one I'll have to remember that

Wow, I didn't realize Mana Reflection was so expensive.

Sarkhan Unbroken's top ability would be ridiculous. I think Dragon Mage would give my opponents too much card advantage for only 5 damage. I've been meaning to acquire a bunch of sol rings for all my commanders so yeah, that's definately a maybe for when I get round to it. The mana doublers are alright late game as I have no way to cheat enchantments onto the board but early game they'd just sit in my hand doing nothing and I'd have hopefully killed opponents before that much mana would make any difference. Mirari's is the only feasable one I think I could include.

Thanks for the suggestions and the +1.

You may want to add Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon and Moltensteel Dragon for a one-shot kill with Scion of the Ur-Dragon.

I know the theme of the deck isn't to do that or abuse combos, but you may want it just in case you need to eliminate a player who got too powerful in a multiplayer game.

Stitch Together, Necromancy, and Death seem like good, low CMC additions.

Hi Headers13, what you think about Defense of the Heart ? Its listed in your Key Cards but not in the Deck.

Vimozahr I switched my proxy of Defense of the Heart out for cheaper reanimation cards Animate Dead, Zombify, Victimize, etc (I just forgot to update my summary)

Great deck, man. I especially love the strong inclination to basics. As a fellow 5-color commander player, I know how important it is to stay on a land plan that heavily involves basics because non-basic hate is one of the easiest ways to push 5-color decks out of the game. Great job tuning this mana base to be flexible and consistent enough to eschew the fancy duals for good old fashioned basics! One thing I noticed was that new card, I think it's called Commander's Sphere seems like a slight upgrade to Manalith.

You could consider a card like Hermit Druid which would be great for you. I think that could be better than some of the other spells that put cards in your graveyard. Also, one thing to consider is cards that give you hexproof. I like Aegis of the Gods. There isn't a dragon that does this unfortunately. At first I thought Spirit of the Hearth might be a dragon, but anyway, depending on your meta, hexproof is really useful at deterring Bojuka Bog type effects from targeting you. It doesn't stop Scavenging Ooze but it does stop things like Tormod's Crypt and a lot of other common GY hate. If your meta doesn't do that as much, then no biggie.

Hi, thanks for taking a look at the deck and the suggestions.

Commander's Sphere definitely looks good.

I fear Hermit Druid could put a few too many cards into the graveyard as the deck only contains 15 basic land.

Graveyard hate isn't that prevalent in my meta so Aegis or Spirit maybe good sideboard cards just in case I run into some.

What do you think about Crux of Fate?

May 14, 2016 3:15 p.m.

I definitely considered it when putting the deck together as it's a great targeted board wipe for 5 manna. I think I dropped it based on the hope my board presence would be stronger which meant focusing all the spells on the re-animator theme. It's probably worth a side-board through for the times when the deck can't cope with an opponents board presence.
