When I searched for a deck based on aliens, I found three things:

• "X-Files" themed decks.
• Alien vs Predator decks.
• Eldrazi tribal decks.

None of these were what I was looking for, so I've decided to make my own!

This deck aims to try capturing the supposed fear, confusion and helplessness of an alien abduction experience. Every card in here will have a relevant name, art and / or flavor text.

Some background - I've always been fascinated by this phenomenon. The concept has both frightened and intrigued me for almost as long as I can remember. I decided that making this deck would be a fun and interesting challenge because Magic is such an expressive and customizable game - almost any theme is possible given the extensive catalog of cards. However, a theme like this has never been tackled by WotC, and it's not likely to be, so making a deck would require a lot of thinking in order to come up with a relevant decklist.

I didn't want to capture the stereotypical experience of something like "oh aliens took me and probed me and it was awful". I'm trying to capture a more "realistic" and honest experience - think Communion by Whitley Strieber, where he openly admits that he could be experiencing something real, but it's also possible that he's just losing his mind. As such, each card in this deck will fit into one or more of the following themes:

• Sleep (and lack thereof, e.g. Startled Awake  , Night Terrors, Sleep Paralysis).
• Loss of time (e.g. Lost Hours, Time Stop).
• The feeling of being exposed and watched (e.g. Glaring Spotlight, Telepathy).
• Questioning ones' reality, experience and sanity (e.g. Fraying Sanity, Vanish into Memory, Rewind).
• A search for truth (e.g. Quest for Ancient Secrets, Interpret the Signs, Obsessive Search).
• Intrusion / Disturbance (e.g. Thought Scour, Transgress the Mind, Cranial Extraction).
• Triplicity and triangles (e.g. Sen Triplets, True Believer).
• Helplessness and being at the mercy of a higher power (e.g. Overwhelming Splendor, again Sen Triplets).
• The contrast between Night / Day and Day, and how night brings fear (e.g. Moonlace, Nightcreep, Wintermoon Mesa).

Note that the functioning of the deck, as well as any synergies, are of least concern to me. It is a consideration, but the primary goal is to make a deck to capture an experience, not one that will play well.

Cards in the maybeboard are currently not "on-theme" enough for my liking, but my opinions could change. They're mostly there to demonstrate that they were on my radar.
