I first started playing MtG about 10 years ago via janky kitchen-table "Modern" with my college friends. We dove into EDH around 2019 & haven't looked back since.

I aim for high-powered casual, & when it makes sense to, usually include at least 1 combo wincon to help close grindy games. I like to have some variance in my play & only run a couple of suboptimal tutors in my combo-y decks.

is quickly becoming my favorite 3 color combo. Red & Black have grown on me the most since I've started playing MtG, especially EDH, and are probably my favorite single colors.

Decks currently owned/played in paper:

If you want an idea of my meta check out our page Mages of Magic Meta. Deck lists may vary by account, but this is more or less a list of the commanders in the meta, and a hub to our accounts and deck lists.

Venoctus, I'd recommend checking out the Token Theme Page on EDHRec.

Jetmir, Nexus of Revels is a pretty popular token commander right now

vishnarg, I've submitted a few cards recently, and for past sets. Turn around time for availability for actual deck editing took a day to a couple of days in each case.

Absolutely KBK7101! My Skyhunter Strike Force submission was approved earlier today. Hopefully it will be live for edits in the next couple days.

It's likely going to replace Adriana, Captain of the Guard in my deck.

Between Skyhunter, Mondrak, Glory Dominus, & Otharri, Suns' Glory, I'm pretty happy with this set. I think Voltron Equipment Isshin lists will be eating well with some of the For Mirrordin! equipment support.

  • cut higher end CMC creatures.

If you have a lot of token strats in your meta, I'd recommend checking out Authority of the Consuls & Legion Loyalist. I think ETB damage effects will also be your best friend to help you get "around" those boards.

No prob Michigone! I've had a lot of fun playing Isshin for almost a year now.

Honestly, I think you could cut a couple of your higher end CMC. I had Etali in my Isshin deck for a while, but cut it because it felt too boom or bust. In general, I think keeping your curve low will help with recovery against removal. For this reason I also cut Paladin Class from my deck fairly early. Too much mana investment for the effects.

I think Tutors can certainly help. I currently run Diabolic Intent because of my high token production. I think as long as you have enough repeatable draw, you should be fine. I usually tutor up board protection effects or finishers.

Whoops, just realized I meant to tag you in my last response Michigone, and not Plainsrunner.

I like the updates that you've made since I last looked at your list. If you like Captain's Clawsm I'd recommend checking out Inquisitorial Rosette. The equip cost is steeper, but it produces beefier tokens with Vigilance, and is also a Menace anthem to boot.

I'd recommend adding a bit more draw to your deck. I counted about 7-9ish effects that net you some type of card draw or advantage. Since you have a lot of token creating effects, I think that Skullclamp could be right at home here. I think getting about 3-4 more drawing effects in your deck could help it feel a bit more fluid & consistent.

I know I already mentioned them in my last comment, but Tocasia's Welcome and Plumb the Forbidden are both excellent draw options in token focused strategies. I use them both, along with Skullclamp in my Isshin deck to decent success. Tocasia's Welcome might look a little modest because it only draws once per turn, but is fairly reliable if you have a lot creature generating effects. A couple of repeatable draw effects will bolster the one-off and burst draw effects you already have.

Lastly, I'd recommend checking out Ogre Battledriver, since you have Ardoz, Cobbler of War in deck. Haste anthem volume is really helpful with the reliability of some of your big finisher creatures.

If you want an untapper that also is board protection for aggro swings, I'd highly recommend Reconnaissance. A few more recs that could be funky fits:

  • Last-Ditch Effort - Someone thinks they have you on the ropes because your board full of tokens is tapped out? Throw them all at their face.

  • Scapegoat - Sac 1 myr token and save your board

  • Throne of the God-Pharaoh - Actually, who really cares about untapping before your end step?

No prob K4m4r0! Urtet seems like fun, but I think I would probably focus on 2-3 colors if I brewed it, instead of the full WUBRG.

You could focus on +1/+1 counters, and add Hamza, Guardian of Arashin for a bunch of free Myr lol.

I think Skullclamp could be a wonderful addition to the deck. It's always okay to chuck your little 1/1s into the Clamp in exchange for some resources lol

Alesha has received some cool new tech in the past year that I'd recommend checking out:

Not new tech, but also worth looking at:

I hope these suggestions are helpful.

January 19, 2023 11:39 p.m.

Thank you for cool the suggestions DawnsRayofLight. I've played Seasoned Dungeoneer a bit in my Burakos, Party Leader/Folk Hero deck before I swapped it out. I totally forgot about Caves of Chaos Adventurer.

My playgroup has a house rule where we introduce Monarch into our games at the end of the third turn rotation. The person going last in turn order becomes Monarch at the end of that turn. I think I may have placed some of the Initiative cards on back burner because I didn't want to have my group track both Monarch and Initiative/Under City at the same time.

Otharri and Neyali are both pretty cool tech. I think the Equipment Voltron Isshin lists are going to get some of the most tech with the newer equipment in the pre-con. I've been play-testing Neyali, Suns' Vanguard a bit in the slot I have Professional Face-Breaker rn. The impulse draw from Neyali is cool for some second-main set up, but feels a little annoying when she impulses some of my instant speed removal & protection.

I'm also testing Mondrak, Glory Dominus in the slot I have Leonin Warleader rn. Norn's Decree is also interesting. Hoping my submission will be live soon.

Lmao my bad TypicalTimmy, and also kudos to younger you from 7 years ago on the foresight. I think each time a commander that I know I'm going to build is spoiled, I immediately rush to my brewing sites to try to lay claim to my stupid pun names.

January 19, 2023 9:18 p.m.

TypicalTimmy, I think they are referring to Urtet, Remains of Memnarch

Text translation:

Legendary Artifact Creature - Myr

Whenever you cast a Myr spell, create a 1/1 colorless Myr artifact creature.

At the beginning of combat on your turn, untap each Myr you control.

, : Add 3 +1/+1 counters to each Myr you control. Activate this during your turn.

Myr tribal finally gets its long awaited commander. 5 color lists aren't my typical cup of tea, but I have a few things for your consideration:

I hope these suggestions are helpful. Having access to all 5 colors really opens the possibilities for tribal support.

I'm guessing that we will see the Battle type in March of the Machines. I'd have to look for it, but MaRo stated on his Tumblr that Battles would be coming in a future set. Given that March of the Machines will be a big inter-planar conflict, it seems like the type of set where Battles would make sense to be introduced.

Your deck is off to a pretty solid start. I see that you copied another Isshin list to play-test it, but is there a specific build avenue you are most interested in for Isshin? The plethora of attack triggers out there lend themselves to a few different theme possibilities for him: Token Go-Wide, Exalted/Voltron, Dungeon Venturing and Party, and Pillowfort/Goad/Forced combat control.

The deck you have here has a lot of the main staples, but isn't leaning into one avenue or another quite yet. A lot of what I see in your list currently leans a bit more towards a token build. Regardless of your choice, I have some recommendations that work well with most variations:

  • Reconnaissance - Pseudo-Vigilance and also protects your board by removing creatures from combat after they've dealt damage, but before combat ends. Not the most budget option, but an all-star card in Isshin.

  • Scapegoat - Especially helpful and cheap board protection, especially if you are leaning towards tokens. Basically return any number of creatures to hand

  • Dolmen Gate - Very helpful board protection, and helps round things out with the Iroas you already have in board. Also not the most budget option, but a great card in this deck.

  • Plumb the Forbidden - Awesome draw spell that you can hold up in response to boardwipes. This has helped my Isshin deck stay fueled up after board wipes that set everyone else back.

  • Slaughter the Strong and Promise of Loyalty are both cool boardwipe options that Isshin can dodge, and also can help get around Indestructible.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. I'd be happy to give some additional feedback if you have a more specific build or budget in mind.

January 19, 2023 12:32 p.m.

Thank you for the suggestions flapjackwars. It's been a bit since I've made any significant edits to the deck. I've had this deck on back burner as a potential future build. I'll definitely do another round of edits if I do decide to pull the trigger.

There is a card spoiled early today that I think will fit this deck perfectly:

All Will Be One Show

Let me know if the spoiler tag didn't work. The drop down wasn't working for me for some reason.

January 18, 2023 11:33 p.m. Edited.

Nice deck! If you want to lean into your Samurai flavor a bit more, I'd recommend checking out Ronin Cliffrider. It has an attack trigger that can be useful against token creature boards. Sadly, Bushido doesn't work with Isshin.

Aside from that, I'd recommend adding a bit more 2 mana rocks like Boros Signet & Talisman of Conviction. Your mana curve is a little steep, so having like 3ish more could help out your Sol Ring & Arcane Signet.

January 18, 2023 10:33 p.m.

DemonDragonJ, in case you haven't seen it here is the full Sword of Forge & Frontier

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and from green.

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, exile the top two cards of your library. You may play those cards this turn. You may play an additional land this turn.

I think the arts for White Sun's Twilight and Black Sun's Twilight most Cleary communicate the "giant monument" motif. They look a bit more distinct from their Praetor counterparts, whereas, Blue & Green Sun's Twilight do kinda look more like ginormous Jin & Vorinclex.
