Yeah, there are actually a lot of cool things you can do with Smile at Death in any color combination. The things I can think of:

  • Clones Blue has a lot of clones, and most of them are 0/0 outside of the battlefield.
  • Entry triggers These are fairly obvious. Pay special attention to ones like Hornet Queen and Blade Splicer on one side; Ravenous Chupacabra, Chomping Changeling, and Goblin Settler on the other; and Eternal Witness on the third.
  • Sac activated abilities These are the easy ones. Things like Silverchase Fox can provide a lot of card advantage if you bring them back every turn.
  • +1/+1 counter effects The classic Spikes are useful here, but so are things like Phantom Nishoba. Not bad getting an 8/8 phantom.
  • Evolution Witness This is sort of a special one, because the trigger is off the +1/+1 counter being put on Evolution Witness. Still, why should creatures with power 2 or less have all the fun? Evolution Witness lets you recur everything.

Finally, I must mention that Felothar the Steadfast, Doran, the Siege Tower, and Arcades, the Strategist are even better with Smile at Death.

At a bare minimum, Smile at Death gives you 6 points of power divided between 2 creatures, every turn. But there's a lot more. Just watch out for the usual gravehate. (Scavenging Ooze, Bojuka Bog, Farewell, Nihil Spellbomb, Rest in Peace, etc.)

Avalanche Riders and Goblin Settler are some of my favs for this archetype.

Faultgrinder and Tuktuk Scrapper are pretty efficient for artifact hate.

RNR_Gaming on New secret lair Alert!

Anyways with that whole kickstarter thing going on I noticed that the professor hasn't made a video so in case anyone was wondering

Some regular guys non-foil/foil

Void Winnower - 16.07/20.46

Vengevine - 10.71/12.95

Collector Ouphe - 5.63/33.07

Goblin Settler - 48.71/N/a

Non foil: 81.12 Foil: 115.19

Foil: B / non-foil: C+

There's a good bit of value with this secret lair. Goblin settlers getting its' first foil printing is definitely noteworthy. Also, if you're into the Adventure Time art style you'll like be picking this up anyways.

Showcase: Streets of New Capenna

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice - 30.77/35.53

Breya, Etherium Shaper - 7.98/9.84

Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder - N/A/8.84

Non-foil: 47.59 foil: 54.21

Non-foil - D foil: C-

This grade pains me because I REALLY think the art on these is beautiful and they'll likely include a Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis in the same style as a bonus card but putting personal preferance and speculation aside the value just is not here.

Special Guest: Matt Jukes Foil Edition

Glacial Fortress - 3.71/11.25

Drowned Catacomb - 7.28/17.46

Dragonskull Summit - 3.79/6.96

Rootbound Crag - 3.81/6.55

Sunpetal Grove - 3.89/5.96

Non-foil: 22.48 foil: 48.18

Non-foil - F foil - D-

The value in these really speaks for itself.

Artist Series: Magali Villeneuve

Mother of Runes - 4.91/Varies

Death's Shadow - 6.12/10.19

Elvish Mystic - .45/9.97

Forest - N/A

Non-foil - 11.48 Foil: N/A

Non-foil - F Foil - D-

The biggest thing out of this lair is the foil Mother of Runes the prices fluctuates so much with the older foils it's hard to set an exact price to obtain a foil one; if we look at the previous secret lairs those versions of Mother of Runes are sitting at about 6-10 a piece.

Artist Series: Sidharth Chaturvedi

Concordant Crossroads - 46.87/N/A

Nomad Outpost - 1.06/5.74

Ghost Quarter - 1.12/16.90

Island - N/A

Non-foil: 49.05 foil: 69.51

Non-foil: D- foil: C

Essentially this lair is being carried by the fact that Concordant Crossroads only has 1 printing and has never had a foil printing. If you need one or would like to get a foil one knows your chance but outside of that its just some bulky cards with nice art.

Artist Series: Wayne Reynolds

Sram, Senior Edificer - .25/6.09

Torbran, Thane of Red Fell - .95/1.89

Depala, Pilot Exemplar - .23/1.65

Balthor the Defiled - 10.95/59.61

Non-foil: 12.38 Foil: 69.24

Non-foil - F Foil - C

This lair is also being carried by 1 card that has only 1 printing the rest is bulk.

Finally! Left-Handed Magic Cards

Sisay, Weatherlight Captain - .98/6.02

Empress Galina - 18.31/206.82

Geralf's Messenger - 9.89/34.48

Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh - .26/.41

Garruk, Caller of Beasts - 8.20/23.41

Non-foil: 37.64 foil; 271.14

Non-foil - C Foil: A

While Empress Galina is definitely the chase card out of this; it still has value in the other slots too outside of Roger - but even Roger is still highly playable.

Anyways, after doing all the math and putting this all together I appreciate the professor doing this and compiling it a video format. Also, which secret lairs if any are you planning to get?

Benchwarmer247 I never really liked how the goblin theme ran in Norin, so ended up cutting Goblin Settler, Goblin Matron and Krenko, Mob Boss. I've found cards like Fork and Reverberate end up working much better than Gamble since usually at least one of your opponents will play a tutor spell for you to copy. Mox Amber has been awesome and I've kept a lot of opening hands just because it was in it. The trick is to tap it for mana before Norin leaves. I have gotten so much value out of Goblin Welder exchanging myr tokens generated off of Genesis Chamber for artifacts in my graveyard.

Goblin Wizard for Goblin Settler ?

Purphoros, God of the Forge you would be able ping down your opponents on top of buffing your your goblins.

10/10 deck looks fun to play!

Spellgorger Weird seems out of place.
what about Dwarven Miner or Goblin Ruinblaster or Orcish Settlers or Detritivore or Goblin Settler?

if you like the +1+1 counters there is always Taurean Mauler

Invader Parasite is an awesome recommendation! It is definitely a better Ogre Arsonist I would rather use Goblin Settler over either since it is one mana less, but it is a little out of my price range. I thought about having a artifact destruction creature like Irreverent Revelers or Ingot Chewer, but I would rather just put in another artifact destruction spell like By Force. I think it has more value and its immediate. Bogardan Hellkite and Cavalier of Flame are a bit more mana intensive and I focused on actual card draw in this deck rather than rummaging. I have been debating Flametongue Kavu from the beginning but am having a hard time thinking of what to substitute it for.

lol oops...

Profet93 You know it! Thanks for the suggestions.

Vigilante Justice is not the best card in the deck, but the ability to target creatures has been huge. I found myself with games where Norin would flicker in and out without providing value, so I added it in. In the right meta it can be powerful.

Goblin Engineer -awesome suggestion, I'll try it out!! I might replace [goblin welder] with it - I've had some dead welder games recently.

Check out the above comment for Experimental Frenzy - this card has been huge for me, you can sometimes get 4-5 cards out, especially with Sensei's Divining Top . Pandemonium can backfire, but it's easy enough to hold it if up against a token deck or something. In the vast majority of cases it has been great.

Any card draw you'd recommend besides Endless Atlas ? How has atlas performed? I tried to add as much card draw as I could (except for obvious budget breakers like Wheel of Fortune or now that you mention it, Goblin Settler .

Pyrohemia is absolutely one of the best cards in the deck. Note that you can stack the triggers so as long as norin flickers back in, you don't have to sacrifice it. It's really brutal mono-red control.

how has Sunbird's Invocation performed? I'm hesitant at the idea of a 6 drop enchantment with no immediate impact...

Cloudstone Curio let's you return ETB creatures to hand with Norin, yes. It's a surprisingly powerful mid/late-game value engine. I've won games off of it alone when I've been out of gas and empty handed. Same with Conjurer's Closet . You can stack it so Norin enters and leaves twice, double triggering ETB effects. Great great include
