Further Testing Needed

UPDATE: After looking at Thing in the Ice versus my small instant/sorcery pool, I have sided 2 of them out and replaced them with Jace Beleren and Jace, the Mind Sculptor to work alongside the Fraying/Corrosion Combo and have additional options if one planeswalker is removed too early in the game. Also considering siding Thing in the Ice altogether and add 2 more of Jace's Archivist. Any thoughts on that would also be appreciated :)

Improving the switch to Modern

RunSwimDrum, 6 years ago

So after this deck rotated out of standard I kept it together, because I really like it and it's my go-to Modern deck when playing the format with friends. I'm pretty sure that it's power level isn't high enough to go toe-to-toe in a tournament environment though, so I'm starting to explore options to make it more powerful, while still keeping the core together. I consider the core to be Predator Ooze, Lotleth Troll, and Corpsejack Menace. Any suggestions are welcome!

Even More Catching Up

Brawler_1337, 6 years ago

It’s been about six months since my last update. Let’s do this.

I finally acquired an Eternal Masters foil Wrath of God to accompany my foil Damnation. It was more expensive than I thought it would be, but it looks great.

I found a foil Godless Shrine at a con, so my shocks are finally fully foiled. Yeah, they’re not Expeditions, but I’ll save those for when I have a paying job and I can afford to be less frugal. This also means that the only nonbasic land left to be foiled (aside from Strip Mine, which is already pretty pimp as an Antiquities copy) is Bojuka Bog. That one’s gonna be tricky to find.

With Battlebond game two reprints that I sorely needed: Diabolic Intent and Greater Good. Judge foil Greater Goods aren’t terribly expensive, but they aren’t as readily available. Diabolic Intent, though, saved me from having to shell out for a Planeshift foil.

At the same time that I got the Greater Good, I shelled out for a foil Life from the Loam. It was $50, but that’s still less than TCG mid for a Modern Masters copy, so I’m happy. (I am, however, kicking myself for not getting a foil RAV copy for $34, like, a year ago.)

I did come across a foil Phyrexian Altar, and I was seriously tempted by its prettiness. Then I looked up the price tag and immediately vomited. Jesus, that card needs a reprint.

Where the hell are all the foil Abzan Charms in the world?

Removed: Curse of the Cabal, Recover Added: Soul Salvage, Arguel's Blood Fast Curse can be a sac outlet, but it tends to draw attention to you. Hardcasting it can take one opponent out of the game, but then the others gang up on you. If you like it, leave it in, but I'd rather have draw. Soul Salvage is like Recover but better.

100% Win/Loss Record

Ares111123, 6 years ago

On our stores Commander Wednesday's game i played this in one of the 3 games. The deck ended up winning but only because my opponent made his deal sound like a threat and I was able to Convince the player i had at 16 commander damage to attack the other player until he was dead. Personally i feel like this deck is trying to do too many different things so im am scrapping it in favor of a more basic RG beat down deck that will be nostalgic of my old theros RG devotion deck. Im going to keep this decklist online just in case anyone wants to build the deck their own way but other than that i wont be doing anything with it.

Some Changes

Ares111123, 6 years ago

Recently picked up a Show and Tell for my Narset Turn 0 Win deck but the player told me it had to go in the group hug deck too so i tuned the deck a bit.
Cut: Worldly Tutor, Surrakar Spellblade, and Primal Command
In favor of: Show and Tell, Arcane Artisan, and Masumaro, First to Live.
I cut the tutors to make the deck more fair and random and spellblade had too many hoops to jump through to get cards.
The artisan allows us to draw cards AND cheat cmc of creatures or be nice and help out opponents. Show and tell is fun to play when your not dropping something crazy. Masumaro fits perfectly with the deck and is especially nice when you drop a card like Prime Speaker Zegana afterwards.

FNM 3/8/18

Nusteyr, 6 years ago

I went 3-1 tonight, had some good games and some horrible games.

2-0 grixis control

Sarkhan's Unsealing doesn't care if you have counterspells and removal. Thorn Lieutenant was good here.

0-2 RB aggro

Both my hands were too slow in this matchup, I need to get better at shuffling, lol. I mulligan to 5 both games. I probably should have removed Sarkhan's Unsealing for more creatures.

2-1 mono green aggro

Both of us had some mana issues, these games would have been interesting if not for that.

1-0 (opponent conceded) Aetherflux storm

He went through alot of his deck and managed to storm off several times, the thrashing Brontosaurus helped, but he couldn't deal with Unsealing, or the amount of damage swinging in each turn.

Minor updates

I felt that both PWs were not having much impact on the game and Deploy the Gatewatch is not as reliable as Captain Sisay is.

Last, but not least, I'll try Jodah, Archmage Eternal as Commander, instead of Progenitus. What I felt was that Progenitus almost never entered battefield, so I'm trying something new.

In: Pir, Imaginative Rascal, Toothy, Imaginary Friend, Captain Sisay and Jodah, Archmage Eternal.

Out: Jace, Architect of Thought ,Kiora, the Crashing Wavefoil, Deploy the Gatewatch, Progenitus

Made Some More Changes

Toxicnerve, 6 years ago

I got rid of a few other cards. I'm aiming for more of an aggro hand control. Atleast that seems to be the better direction for this deck. I did some research on control decks and what to build for and I'm trying to make sure that each card has a use and enables good plays if I think out each of my turns and play my cards correctly for the current situation. I'm in the process of figuring out my instants and sorceries as I want to add some draw ability, hand reveal/discard and counterspells. At the moment I'm thinking I may have to tone down some other cards to make room or figure out a system of cards for sideboard and what to switch to main board for what situation. Any suggestions for sideboard options and the other things mentioned above would be very helpful. Another thing I was considering was my splash colors. I had an idea for adding some white for artifact and enchantment removal for the kinds of cards that make hand control harder as a sideboard while also keeping blue for some of the other things, but I didn't want my land base to be messed up. I was thinking of maybe doing something like using blue/white dual lands for my splash color lands to keep my opponent's guessing while also providing easy sideboarding with different colors a little. Does anyone know if this would work? Again, any advice on this would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance! :)

Time and cards have come into being to allow and encourage a total ovrwork of this deck. More things from bolas's bag of tricks but much fine tuning to be done.

Decklist update

protozero90, 6 years ago

-1 Sedraxis Alchemist

-1 Kindred Discovery

+1 Wheel of Fortune

+1 Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur

Spellseeker has made the reanimator strategy a lot more interesting, so I am testing Jin again.

Kindred Discovery is not good when you only run 29 wizards. Might go back in if I go back up to 32-33 wizards at some point. Wheel of Fortune is probably just better in the deck.
