Purphoros' Might, Fury and Steel.

Commander / EDH Aggro Goblins Mono-Red

"Let no creature, man nor beast. Stand above me. Be my fury on the battlefield and ascend with me. You are my chosen." -Purphoros "the battle that forged the anvil"

I built this deck with the intention of playing a deck that comes in under the curve at my table. A fast deck that gains momentum as more mana is added.

So why not a goblin tribal deck? My favorite creature in magic is probably the goblin. I've put way to much money into my Modern Goblin deck and don't really play much Modern these days.

Krenko was my first choice but my table plays far to many board wipes. So I looked at Purphoros, he doesn't care about board wipes. Well, not near as much as the other token decks.

This is because damage is already dealt when creatures ETB. I Play multiple sac outlets in the deck. When a Boardwipe or spot removal is placed on the stack there are multiple ways to respond to that, I can sac my current creature count for more creatures! (read: more damage) or sac them to place charge counters on spawning pit, wait for the wipe to resolve and make more damage!!

The issues im having is a lot of the token generating creatures are still around 4-7 cmc. I found I had to increase the land count from 35 to 37, as to not miss land drops 1-5(7). It's probably safe to play 35 lands. But I feel better flooding on mana then I do not drawing into it.

Red has terrible card draw choices. I've tried to add cards that help with this. Most token decks greatly improve when Skullclamp is played. Looting effects like Faithless Looting and Daretti, Scrap Savant make thinning the deck easier. I'm also now playing a Gamble because sometimes I need that one card to end the game.

So far, it is a very fast deck, that can curve out and end games on turn 6. I get hated on pretty quickly if I dont hold back. I found it best to setup a board and make lots of damage at once. I'll dig a look for the combo pcs I need. It almost plays out as a combo-aggro deck.

DECK TECH

What are the advantages of playing this deck?

It's fast and can come out of nowhere to end the game. I hold back and establish a solid boardstate. That is, purphoros in play, a sac outlets and the mana to vomit goblins.

what don't you like about the deck?

As soon as my table sees I'm using purphoros. I feel pretty out numbered. I've found myself loosing games where I am clearly not the threat. But because I've dealt 16 damage on turn 5 to each opponent. I become a target.

So I've learnt to lay low and form silent alliances. What I mean bye that is, help players attack other opponents. Subtly will win games.

Ok so, how do I play the deck?

I am looking to get Purphoros asap. This means an opening hand with a Sol Ring or Mind Stone. My table grants one free mulligan to 7 and I almost always take it. Looking for those mana rocks.

A turn 4 purphoros is fine. This just means I have more time to dig for the sac outlets like Tooth and Claw.

"It didn't take long for the Ironclaw clans to realize the strength of the goblins came in thier numbers and that even in death, a goblin is quit useful."

Once we've summoned pophurous, I'm looking the play cards that build mana, sac outlets and cards that boost the damage of pophurous ETB trigger.

Thran Dynamo Spawning Pit Impact Tremors

This allows the deck to be very reactive to our opponents. It helps us keep our devotion in check so pophurous won't be targeted as a creature. And we have added value through our sac outlets.

Once our board state is set up. We have a decision to make. Is this hand ready to fire or do we hold back?

-1 Culling Dais - to slow card draw

+1 Goblin Recruiter - once I get one or two ramp cards out. It's fun to vomit goblins onto the battlefield.
