Krenko Goblin Tribal

Pros & Cons

[+] Insanely fast

[+] High OTK potential

[+] Does not rely on only combat wincons

[+] Easily manageable combos for infinite gobos and mana

[+] You're playing gobos

[-] Weak to boardwipes

[-] Easily become the archenemy at the table

[-] No reliable card draw

[-] No blue :(

Strategy

The way the deck navigates is pretty straight-forward. Churn out powerful gobos (ex. Goblin Chieftain), mono-color staples (ex. Caged Sun), and tribal buffs (ex. Coat of Arms) to shut down the table quickly.

Due to Krenko's ability to produce large amounts of tokens quickly for very little investment, you have multiple ways to close out games. You start off by abusing artifacts (ex. Thornbite Staff, Thousand-Year Elixir) to produce gobos en masse and then seal the deal via combat through sheer numbers, powerful buffs (ex. Eldrazi Monument, Marton Stromgald), or bolt people for ridiculous amounts of health (ex. Last-Ditch Effort, Impact Tremors).

There's no real politics to be played here as the moment Krenko hits the field most playgroups will identify you as the immediate threat. Our main strength is bursting down opponents and I have found that Krenko has a difficult time winning games that last beyond turn 10. Do not hesitate to be the aggressor. This deck is not meant to durdle; it is meant to punch the guy to your left and your right without prejudice and so if you're the type to sit by and let everyone else do their thing this deck is not for you.

Weaknesses

Boardwipes are a known weakness to most token decks, but this is especially the case for Krenko. Wraths which usually require more investment such as Toxic Deluge or Black Sun's Zenith easily deal with our 1/1 gobos and if Krenko is killed too frequently the commander tax will eventually lock us out of the game. Mono-red already has issues with mana, but our only reliable sources for ramp (ex. Skirk Prospector, Mana Echoes) become null after a board clear.

Card draw is also a sore spot in our color. We make do with what we can (ex. Tormenting Voice, Faithless Looting), but if the game drags on we tend to run out of fuel. I am always experimenting to see how to address the lack of card draw in red, so if you have suggestions please let me know.

With the release of vehicles and the "crew" mechanic in Kaladesh, I considered throwing in a few of the more powerful and fun ones due to the ease by which we can activate them using gobos. Having play-tested many of the vehicles, I have come to the conclusion that the Goblin Clown Car strat is too slow and you're better off spending the mana to vomit out more goblins. Smuggler's Copter and Consulate Dreadnought were two who have found a spot in the deck. Consulate allows us to avoid losing too many tokens to creatures with trample/first strike/double strike and makes for a decent early beater. Copter gives us much needed card draw.

Amonkhet had some nice cards for token strategies, but Throne of the God-Pharaoh and Combat Celebrant are the only real worthawhile pickups for Krenko. Glorious End got added because its spicy and allows for us to shut down someone else's combo and gives us one more turn to scrounge up a win. Unfortunately, C17 and Ixalan didn't really have any cards for us either. While there were quite a number of strong tribal support, they're all a bit too slow for gobos. With 2 more sets for Ixalon incoming, lets hope we get something a bit faster.
