Inspiration Discussion

FenrisBurgess on Narset, Exalted Master

Wow, a wall of text with potentially useful advice.

  • "is not really needed since most cards are instants and can be cast immediately after attacking with Narset."

  • A simple Manalith would aid in getting out Narset. As it stands, you will only be able to get Narset on turn 6, assuming you don't miss a land drop.

  • You have no haste granting cards, so your strategy will only take off on turn 7 if you are lucky and nobody plays an Edict effect..
  • Most people can gain a significant advantage by turn 7 if all goes well. No amount of counters can stop 3 opponent's from building their boards. You'll be a sitting duck most of the time.
  • There is a reason almost all commander decks run a Sol Ring . The faster you can play your strategy, the more likely you are to win.

  • "unless they are instant cards i don't really need them."

  • Chemister's Insight is strictly better than Inspiration . There is no reason you cannot use both, but Chemister's Insight has far more utility.
  • Counterspell , Archmage's Charm , Sinister Sabotage , Thought Collapse , and Dissolve are all strictly better than Cancel , and those are the cheap $$$ counters.
  • Lightning Bolt and Skewer the Critics are strictly better than Lightning Strike and Wizard's Lightning especially considering you don't have any wizards.
  • Your deck runs Lifelink . The card itself is cheap, but by the time your Commander is out, cost shouldn't be a consideration. Cards like Daybreak Coronet and Steel of the Godhead provide you with far more utility.
  • Cards like Dub and Angelic Gift provide a useful effect, but there are better cards that do more: Gryff's Boon and Asha's Favor to name a few minor improvements.

  • Questionably, you are running Artificer's Epiphany with only one artifact in the deck.

  • You are running 11 counters as control. Those 11 counters won't do you any good with Narset unless you plan to counter your own spells. Running cards like Disperse keeps stuff off the field and will be still be useful if you happen to exile it later on.
  • Your burn spells won't do much against larger creatures either.

  • "this is not a budget deck. budget, mana or money, is not a priority. if it somehow is then it is merely a coincidence."

  • I'm not sure what you're trying to say here, but I feel the need to advise you that:
  • Your mana base does, in fact, matter.
  • You have far better options for cards.
  • The only reason to play this deck as it is, is if you were on a budget. If you are not, then you can certainly replace the cards with better versions.

Rhadamanthus on Do you have to Mill ...

I don't know why, but I had a sudden thought about this interaction again and I realized there was a defect in my earlier thinking.

Tamiyo, Collector of Tales would only stop you from discarding (forcing you to mill instead of draw) if the effect trying to make you draw extra cards is controlled by an opponent. Chains of Mephistopheles doesn't do anything directly, but rather changes the result of other effects. For example: if you target yourself with Inspiration in this situation then you discard-draw, discard-draw. Tamiyo doesn't interfere because it's your own spell that's causing you to discard cards. If someone else cast Inspiration targeting you then Tamiyo would stop you from discarding and you'd be forced to mill 2 cards.

KaladeshKat on Demonic Patience

@Zirion yeah I think its fine, what other removal is there? There is one you can pay life for, but I can't remember the name, and I think its fine here. Vraska's Contempt is good in standard but I have no idea what the modern meta looks like.

@bootsworthy actually you are completley wrong... it is doing 3-x damage do the fewer the better. Just think if it was what you were saying... Basically the entire format would be decks that abused the rack by running 4x of it and then just using Inspiration and Prosperity.

SadayOJ on Tribal Chairs for real this time

Why are you running Touch of Brilliance when Divination is literally the same card, but one cheaper, also you could run Glimmer of Genius which is the same, but allows you to scry two at instant speed, Inspiration or Weave Fate is this, but instant, Hieroglyphic Illumination can alternately be cycled for B and is instant, and Comparative Analysis is also this, but instant, and goes down in cost if you've cast another spell. Why Touch of Brilliance, it doesn't even have a chair in it?

chadsansing on Kor/Leonin Equipment (Please Help)

Find that HP altered Jitte FTW/trade ;)

In addition to Comeuppance, Settle the Wreckage is helpful, as are some cards to smooth out combat, like Reconnaissance, High Ground, and Serra's Blessing. Flicker cards like Ghostway can give you an out during combat, as well, but will drop your equipment. Mark of Asylum might be good.

Holy Day, Dawn Charm, Riot Control, Encircling Fissure, Harmless Assault, and Pollen Lullaby can nerf combat damage for a turn. Something like Fumigate or Descend upon the Sinful can save you and add some value other wraths don't (like Wrath of God and Day of Judgment).

W does not have a ton of card draw. Maybe Inheritance and Slate of Ancestry? Possible counters include Dawn Charm, Rebuff the Wicked, Inspiration, Mana Tithe and Lapse of Certainty.

Ajani Goldmane and Ajani Steadfast can speed up your damage with counters. Healer of the Pride can net you some life. Brimaz, King of Oreskos, is just over $10, but may be useful here.

You can also slow things down with Ghostly Prison, Rule of Law, and Worship.

Other protection spells and combos exist, but might be too narrow to use here. I do like Solemnity + Phyrexian Unlife + Force Bubble + Greater Auramancy or Karmic Justice.

Zekelmor on U/B Nezahal Control

there is 2 nayasaurs in my LGS and both of them use 4 copies of Carnage Tyrant.

as a control player (Dimir/Grixis/Temur) i deal with them using Commit / Memory or Doomfall (this one here is really good) both maindeck.

about the rotation, you don't need to be worried, since both KLD and AKH blocks will rotate together, and you should be thinking in post-rotation decks when M19 come out.

about the deck itself, there is too much counterspells and a very low amount of removal. what do you do when a creature sticks in the battlefield? there is 5 pieces of removal (including Bontu's Last Reckoning) and should be at least 12.

Secrets of the Golden City should be Glimmer of Genius or Hieroglyphic Illumination or Inspiration, because you must draw cards at instant speed. If you're tapping out to draw cards, you're a open window now.

i also think that Kumena's Awakening is great, but only in decks that can ascend when the enchantment comes in to play, because if it don't, you're giving more cards to your opponent and consequently more threats to answer, and that's really bad for a control player.

Ravenous Chupacabra should be at least Hour of Glory

Nezahal, Primal Tide is a really good control finisher, really hard to get rid off, but is not impossible, so you need another huge threat that draw your opponent's attention and buy you some time or it will close the game quickly, so they must spend all of their resources trying to remove it, and when they do, you cast Nezahal and they cannot answer it. for this role, i think that Torrential Gearhulk and The Locust God are great.

JuQ on Brago Flicker

Unquestioned Authority instead of Holy Mantle (when brago flickers it, you draw a card)
Stonecloaker or Angel of Finality instead of Disposal Mummy
Chart a Course instead of Vision Skeins or basically any other decent draw spell.
Counterspell instead of Dream Fracture
Return to Dust instead of Disenchant
Pull from Tomorrow instead of Inspiration
Concentrate instead of Weave Fate
Scrivener instead of Call to Mind (you have few sorceries anyway)
Ghostway and Eerie Interlude instead of Acrobatic Maneuver and Cloudshift flickering until end of turn will make you avoid board wipes without having to counter it.
Whispersilk Cloak instead of Unbender Tine what's so important to untap anyway?
Cathars' Crusade and/or Call for Unity as finishers.
Duplicant, Deadeye Harpooner, Fiend Hunter (if this one leaves the battlefield when his first ability is still on the stack, he won't give anything back) and /or Phyrexian Ingester as removal.
Venser, the Sojourner because it's just awesome with Brago: You -1 to make all your stuff inblockable, then Brago flickers it and you +2 to flicker something. Rinse and repeat.

Suns_Champion on Share your Bad Beats

I haven't been on the receiving end of many bad beats, but I've unintentionally dished some out. I'll be honest, bad beats aren't fun for anyone, even when it's me who wins.

Return to Ravnica draft: My opponent is at 10ish life with huge board state but 2 cards left in library.

I have 2 life and one card left in library. My turn I draw my last card, Inspiration, target my opponent with it, and pass turn.

MM3 draft: Turn 30ish. Grindy match. Opponent at 50 life because of Scavenging Ooze which is an 11/11.

I'm at 1 life and desperately chump blocking with Dinrova Horrors and Zur the Enchanter. He kills all my creatures but mills himself out. I win with 1 life and two cards left in the library.

I take no pleasure in winning by luck. It happens.
