Monoblack control with a ramp + toolbox theme:

The idea is to build up big mana (Crypt Ghast, Nirkana Revenant, Caged Sun, Extraplanar Lens, Gauntlet of Power, Cabal Coffers, Magus of the Coffers). Then, assemble 1 of the deck's 2 instant-win combos:

  • Professor Onyx + Chain of Smog = infinite damage

  • Bolas's Citadel + Sensei's Divining Top + Aetherflux Reservoir = infinite life which then leads to infinite damage

The key part of piloting the deck is using black's excellent tutors and searching for the correct pieces at the correct times. If you suspect someone is getting ready to run away with the game, you may want to tutor for answers (board wipes, Imp's Mischief, instant-speed removal). Other times you may want to advance your gameplan (mana pieces, card advantage engines, or parts of the combo), or look for something that solidifies your board state (Grave Titan, Drana, Steel Hellkite).

Assessing the board state:

It is also very important to recognize whether the time is right to just go for the win, or to build up a board state and settle in for a grindy game. That is where the commander comes in - if you do not want to commit to anything because you are waiting for the blue player to tap out, or you want to fly under the radar, then you always have the option to use your big mana to make a big Maga which threatens the gamestate while holding other pieces in hand for the right moment.

Interesting things:

1) Necropotence + Reliquary Tower/Thought Vessel is a good target if things are going well, and you just want to draw cards.

2) Insidious Dreams at instant speed with X = 3 and searching for Bolas's Citadel, Aetherflux Reservoir, Sensei's Divining Top is a win (ensure Bolas's Citadel is on top). Similarly, Insidious Dreams with X = 2 for Professor Onyx and Chain of Smog is also a win (Professor Onyx on top, then cast her and use her + ability to get Chain of Smog).

3) Sometimes you do not want to look so threatening so that other players target you - in those scenarios, dropping a Wound Reflection early makes you seem relatively harmless. However, when you drop a Sorin Markov later in the game and use his -3 ability, it immediately takes a player out of the game.

4) Cards like No Mercy and Dread make you an unattractive target in the early and mid-game. As long as you don't drop anything too threatening, you'll be able to fly under the radar.

5) Interaction - black does not have a lot of ways to interact with non-creatures, so we rely on cards like Blast Zone, Steel Hellkite, Pharika's Libation, and Feed the Swarm to deal with those.
