Kaldheim Update - 4. march 2021 —March 4, 2021
After the release of all the new commanders from Commander Legends and Kaldheim and since the TurboNaus archetype is getting more popular, while dominating the format, we made some changes to the Tier list because the metagame is shifting.
Moved Up:
- Golos, Tireless Pilgrim = moved up, because he's the best 5 colored Turbo-Ad Nauseum Commander at the moment because he super easy to cast with cards like Mishra's Workshop/Jeweled Lotus/Jeska's Will etc. and because he tutors for Boseiju, Who Shelters All
- Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools = moved up, because he's one of the new best planeswalker in the meta. For many it was a surprise, but his card draw and the fact that he can be easily cast with black rituals makes him the new powerhouse in cEDH, so that he even replaces Tymna in some lists. Many partner combinations are currently being tested, e.g. with Tymna, Tana, Rograth, Thrasios or Kraum
- Lavinia, Azorius Renegade = moved up, because she alone destroys storm strategies
- Captain Sisay = moved up, because she attacks the metagame really consistent with all the new good cards like Archon of Emeria/Drannith Magistrate, Yasharn, Implacable Earth & Jeweled Lotus
- Derevi, Empyrial Tactician = moved up for the same reasons as Sisay/Lavinia, because he attacks the AdNauseum decks pretty well
- Hamza, Guardian of Arashin = moved up because of the Ancestral Statue Combo
- K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth = with PitA, Lotus and the Opposition Agent has he managed to play along with the big ones
- Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign = moved up, there's an interesting list which can turbo out Doomsday/PitA for free
- Grenzo, Dungeon Warden = moved up, because of Jeweled Lotus, Birgi & Opposition Agent etc.
- Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist/Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar = these 2 can really pack a punch together
- Bladewing the Risen = moved up, because of the Twinflame Combo
- Ranar the Ever-Watchful = moved up, because of the Rest in Peace combo
- Pako, Arcane Retriever + Haldan, Avid Arcanist = moved up, because it also benefits from Jeweled Lotus and Pako is a strong beater and often a pain for all the Ad Nauseum players
- Roalesk, Apex Hybrid = moved up, together with Fynn, the Fangbearer, Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider, Orvar, the All-Form all the new clone cards like Mystic Reflection you can do pretty silly things
- Muldrotha, the Gravetide = moved up, with the release of Jeweled Lotus and the new efficient Stax pieces like Hullbreacher/Opposition Agent the deck is finally more viable again
- Kaalia of the Vast = moved up, Kaalia was already the best non partner Mardu commander, but with the printig of the two new tutor demons and Jeweled Lotus he has become even more consistent
- Kodama of the East Tree = moved up, because of the winner of the Crack Open a Kaldheim Winner who piloted Kodama + Sakashima
- Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith = moved up, because he combos well together with Kodama. He's generating artifacts, which is the only fact what holds him back to be viable in a more competetive setting
- Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker = moved up, because there's a new Jeskai Storm list which can also one shot an opponent with commander damage and we decided to put most of the 2-color partners into the Competetive section
- Tormod, the Desecrator = moved up, because he can be paired for strong color identity of black, and they're also quite some solid combos with Tormod out there
- Ravos, Soultender *f-etch* = moved up, Ravos also moved up because he's probably one of the better non titan 2-color partners, because he's an anthem effect on a stick, and he's also generating value over time. Ravos has the same problem as Kydele and Ludevic. They get overlooken by Tymna, Thrasios and Kraum.
- Alena, Kessig Trapper = moved up, because Temur Selvala is actually playable and Dockside is just broken
- Krark, the Thumbless = also moved up because red is actually pretty strong in the metagame and together with Sakashima he can enable some crazy lines
Moved Down:
- Araumi of the Dead Tide = moved down, because it turns out that although it is a strong dimir deck, the strong spells are often expensive, which is a bit too slow in the current meta. Therefore, she is better off in the Fringe Competetive category.
- Borborygmos, Halfdane, Blind Seer, Squee, Goblin Nabob
, Starke of Rath, Ulasht, the Hate Seed, Tymaret, Chosen from Death, Tymaret, the Murder King & Haktos the Unscarred = moved down, with the release of all the new good commanders, some old ones just look weak in comparison
- Selvala, Heart of the Wilds & Yisan, the Wanderer Bard = moved down, with the release of all the new good commanders, some old ones just look weaker in comparison. They are really strong/proactive and always a force to be recockened, but these decks are lacking interaction, so they aren't as good enough anymore to be at the top of the metagame.
- Silas Renn, Seeker Adept, Tana, the Bloodsower *f-etch*, Vial Smasher the Fierce, Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper, Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder = moved down to Tier 1,5, because most of the time they are played only for the color identity paired with some Titans like Thrasios, Tymna or Kraum
- Marwyn, the Nurturer = since Selvala and Yisan aren't Top tier anymore, we decided to move down Marwyn because she's just the worse Selvala, lacking carddraw.
Questionable:
- Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder
= the best 4-color commander at the moment, we're not sure whether he can be counted as Titan
- Inalla, Archmage Ritualist = is Inalla as good as Kess? Should she be a Titan? We'll se what the new set will bring.
- Obeka, Brute Chronologist = same question for Obeka: Grixis is the best 3 color pairing. Is she better or at least as good as Kess? Tell us in the comments!
- Tergrid, God of Fright Flip = Tergrid is insane in casual games, but we're not sure if it's good enough in cEDH, because the meta isn't that creature heavy atm. Or is Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire just the better choice?
- Tinybones, Trinket Thief = We'll reevaluate the power of Tinybones together and in comparison with Tergrid, God of Fright Flip and all the new black toys
Thank you very much yurixquest. I added her to the list

Why do you guys think Aesi is tier 1.5 instead of 1? I think it's an upgraded version of tatyova

casual_competitive says... #4
i dont think any commander that costs 6 or more should be in the competitive tier
November 19, 2020 9:49 a.m.
@darkpower1496: In casual games, Aesi seems like an better version of Tatyova but the 1 mana difference can actually be pretty significant in competetive EDH. Like casual_competitive said, a commander who costs more than 5 mana is often to slow, to compede in the higher Tiers of the competetive metagame.

interesting new list. Its good someone took up the charge of making a new list since the lab maniacs don't seem to have time to update theirs anymore. by the way, Dargo, the Shipwrecker + Jeska, Thrice Reborn makes for a very strong mono red deck, that can kill the table very quickly. not sure if you have discused this partner pairing when considering where to place them in the list.
November 20, 2020 1:49 p.m.
@Fallerup: Yes that was my thought process, too. Since their list is no longer updated, I've decided to continue the list from now on with two friends, but we would be happy if the community would support us (like you, so thank you very much for your comment), because now there so many possible new pairings, commanders, combos and new synergies... There have been so many new ones that you can quickly lose track of things. Some time has to pass before we can find out which cards are good and which are not. Therefore it's important for us to get as much input as possible from the community (so please share/show this list to your friends and leave your thoughts!), as we all have full-time jobs and thanks to the pandemic, we can only play games via discord now and then. We're familiar with various combos with Dargo and Jeska, but sadly we haven't yet played against such a deck, so I cannot say how fast or how reliant the deck is. It's also very difficult to classify partner commanders here, as you have to evaluate them both in certain pairings, as well as an individual character / commander and therefore we agreed that Dargo is strong, but weaker compared to Jeska. Dargo can shine in certain decks, but Jeska is the real new red star of EDH.

@ smilodex How it works. have Phyrexian Altar on the board and so sac fodder of some kind, cast Dargo, the Shipwrecker and sac him to the altar for a red. you can now sac Dargo over and over and over and over infinitely. then you cast Jeska, Thrice Reborn and -X her to kill the table because she enters with X loyalty counters for each time you cast your commander this game. possible Turn 2 kill, if you have 0 cost mana rocks to get out Phyrexian altar and stuff like that turn 1.you only need 3 creatures or artifacts to sac once and the loop in infinite.
November 21, 2020 3 p.m.
@Fallerup: I already knew that combo, but it's very much christmas wonderland to resolve it turn 2 and sadly there aren't that much tutors in mono-red to make it consistent enough. But with the right partner he'll definitely find it's place.
November 22, 2020 7:02 p.m.
Of course, it's the perfect open hand, m,agical Christmas land as you say. you can have the new Jeweled Lotus to get him out faster. But yeah, not saying it will costantly win turn 2. I'm saying its possible. I like that partner pairing a lot. You can also do the Aetherflux Resovoir death star laser beam win. cast your commander infinite times, cast aetherflux and shoot the table. Not saying on turn 2, but its an option for the deck.

Ishkanah, Grafwidow can be a Combo Deck with its own COmmander Combos, not just a dumb Spider Tribal ;)
November 25, 2020 6:38 a.m.
@Rivrek: Thank you. Moved Ishkanah to fringe competetive because you just need infinite black mana to win and another viable way to win, is together with Food Chain and Altar of the Brood/Blood Artist. I don't know how me missed that, but don't be to harsh with us. With over 1000 possible commanders, somethin like that can happen, haha :D

I think this list could use a little editing, Urza should be top tier, Yawgmoth should be close but not C rank. among a few others

pokejerk20 says... #14
MFBOOM Disagree. I play Yawgmoth, he is fine in 1.5. Urza is generally agreed upon to be tier 1 due to the reliance on Urza and the restriction to mono-blue.
December 17, 2020 12:49 p.m.
@MFBOOM: like pokejerk20 mentioned right, Urza is already top tier and one of the best mono colored commanders and Yawgmoth a rank behind but not far behind. Urza is very strong, but since he's lacking enough tutors he is just slightly worse than others.

Is Edgar really that strong though? I mean, I don’t make my list full power but still...

watched a video of Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith + Kodama of the East Tree and their infinite landfall trigger (with the Gruul bounce land to be specific)....does that warrant a higher tier for both? Just asking. Although, I think Fringe Competitive for Kodama sounds right.
January 3, 2021 3:08 p.m.
@ AintNotGlobeEarth: Yes he is. He's one of the best casual tribal commanders and he also enables some unique vampire or razaketh combos. Eminence is always a really strong ability for a commander and the deck can also sneak some combat wins in games if he can't combo fast enough. In mardu colors you have also access to most of the strongest EDH cards atm, like Dockside, Ad Nauseum, PitA, Underworld Breach, Tymna, Razaketh, Necropotence, Opposition Agent and all other good mardu tutors: _ _
@ Commander_JAR: Very good question, they're both very strong commanders for casual EDH and I think they are both fringe competetive (please don't forget that fringe competetive is Tier 2!) because of the overall "high" cost of the combo (Kodama + Toggo + bounceland + outlet). We haven't played against a lot of competitive Toggo and Kodama decks lately (which can also show that the deck isn't that popular in cEDH). I think there's no gruul deck atm which is better than tier 2, BUT I think that Grumgully, the Generous, Ruric Thar, the Unbowed and maybe Neyith of the Dire Hunt/Grand Warlord Radha are still slightly better. The potential of the deck definitely exists, but I also think that it is unfortunately a bit too slow in the current Turbo AdNaus meta, but in casual it is a very good and funny deck to play and win!

@smilodex I thought as much. Tier 2 is still pretty good IMO.
January 5, 2021 4:01 p.m.
very nice list. keep up the work, updating it.
1 suggestions: I'd put Grenzo in Tier 1.5. He's very strong, fast, utilizes doomsday / (goblin recruiter) AND infinite mana combos AND he can abuse the london mulligan in a way no other deck can.
January 5, 2021 4:10 p.m.
Krark the Thumbless // Sakashima form a cEDH deck. The strategy revolves around copying Krark multiple times and using it's ability to obtain multiple copies of the spell and getting it back into your hand to obtain insane card advantage/mana.

well look at that, a Gruul commander with GoloS effect in Kaldhiem......TOP TIER XD
Svella, Ice Shaper is going to be fuuun
January 17, 2021 1:15 p.m.
Why exactly is Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder in tier 1? Just for Partner colors? If so, why is Akiri, Line-Slinger much lower?
Seeing Roon of the Hidden Realm above Atraxa, Praetors' Voice and Amareth, the Lustrous, and in the same tier as Tuvasa the Sunlit strikes me as odd. Is there some secret tech that pulls Roon out of tier 4(casual)?
I'm surprised that Siona, Captain of the Pyleas is "only" tier 3, considering the 2 card combo with Shielded by Faith. I suppose it is because GW doesn't offer a lot of consistency for it?
Liesa, Shroud of Dusk still needs to be added. Probably goes right next to Kambal, Consul of Allocation. Almost exactly the same 99. Her tax effect also hits creatures, but she costs more mana in exchange and isn't one-sided, so it evens out.
January 23, 2021 11:13 a.m.
I like how this list is kept up on the regular. Good job admins! One thing missing though is deck samples. Is that something that will be added in the future? And what I'm really looking for is the best partner commander for Sakashima of a Thousand Faces . Andy suggestions?
