Alena, Kessig Trapper Discussion
I never understood the purpose of Piper. Let's say I drafted a total of seven Commanders with Partner, not including Piper. Then, let's add Piper in as an 8th draft. And I'm going to literally pick seven at random. HERE WE GOOOO
- Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator
- Esior, Wardwing Familiar
- Tana, the Bloodsower
- Alena, Kessig Trapper
- Gilanra, Caller of Wirewood
- Keskit, the Flesh Sculptor
- Silas Renn, Seeker Adept
- The Prismatic Piper
In this case, I didn't draft a single Commander, so if I desperately wanted to play , I could run Piper, I suppose. However, why would I intentionally nerf myself when I can run so many other options?
For example, you don't need a Pirate-tribal deck to run Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator. You only need 1 Pirate (Your Commander) to deal damage. As long as you deal damage with at minimum 1 Pirate, you get the trigger which then looks at who all was dealt damage. For example, running with Tana, the Bloodsower could yield a Temur Stompy deck that ramps relatively hard. And technically it isn't combat damage you need, just any sort of damage.
Literally a ton of options. Why would anyone intentionally nerf themselves playing Piper and losing out on some strong synergy between abilities? It literally makes zero sense to me. And if the excuse is that you drafted a few white cards but no white Commanders but you REALLY want to play white, then you need to reassess your situation because it ain't gonna happen.

DarkMagician it gets a bit complicated given we're talking about extraterrestrial humans here, but no young, impressionable indigenous kid looking for a fantasy hero that looks like her will be satisfied at Alena, Kessig Trapper. And that's all I'm concerned about here.

Ral, Izzet Viceroy and Tomik, Distinguished Advokist are in a relationship - in the two cards linked, you can even see that Ral is carrying a piece of Tomik’s white cloth and Tomik a piece of Ral’s red cloth to indicate their connection.
Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter’s character blurb mentions how her wife died.

Alena, Kessig Trapper has proven to be one of my favorite red mana dorks of literal all time. She may be useful here, potentially!
More importantly, love to see underutilized gruul commanders more so we stan this.

Hi NomadaLoco and thank you! I've haven't thought about Arcbond before and I think it could be potentially really interesting. I think it would be one of those situational cards as Alena, Kessig Trapper doesn't have very high toughness and potentially wouldn't survive a lot of damage. I think it could be really cool though with the right board state!

Great deck. Definitely plan on trying it out. I've got a Feldon deck that I built using the Daretti Precon as a base. While Feldon is an awesome commander, I also agree that you really need haste to be effective with him. Purphoros serving as sneak attack in the command zone is really nice. I actually like land destruction and resource denial in MonoR when the commander supports it, as gives you a clear resource advantage and helps you close out games quickly. I feel like its important to utilize MLD in the right context though. The bad experiences playgroups have with the MLD player is when they wipe all the lands with no wincon or way to break parity, forcing the game to essentially restart and take double the time. I believe that reds lack of ramp can be counteracted by its ability to target opponents manabases, and its silly for others to complain about this when green players and landfall strategies are so common at producing absurd amounts of lands very quickly. Purphoros really shines with MLD because he can survive with indestructible and you only need 3 mana online to start beating face. Thats probably solid enough parity to go on the front foot and win. Some of the MDFC Lands ( Song-Mad Treachery Flip, Spikefield Hazard Flip, and Kazuul's Fury Flip seem quite mediocre. I'm not sure if the ability on the frontside is even worth the cost of them coming in tapped and slowing things down. Cards I want to try so far are listed below, I wonder what your thoughts on them are?
Keldon Firebombers - You already mentioned this one, 3 lands makes it seem like its made for Purphoros. Even if the opponents get a new hand with lands from a wheel, the likelihood of them being about to ramp out multiple lands in the mid-late game is lower.
Ryusei, the Falling Star - Free boardwipe when we let it die to Purph's effect
Spinerock Knoll - Seems extremely easy to play the exiled card for free with the amount of damage we can do
Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion - Helps cycle through the deck and get more mana
Everflowing Chalice - artifact recycling and scales well with more mana if needed
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx - No real downside
