WHY BALAN IS GOOD

1. The Activated Ability

This is what really sold me on Balan. While playing the Cats precon, I noticed how awful it was casting so much equipment and then having to pay equip costs over and over again. It's a pain in any other voltron deck, though with Balan, you're able to cheat all your equip costs for just 2 mana. That's powerful, not to mention the obvious synergy with her double strike static ability.

Not only does it make gearing Balan up a non-issue, but it also tackles another considerable issue with voltron commanders; shroud.

The ability in question is a blessing and a curse for voltron decks that A. Don't usually run many creatures to temporarily equip shroudy gear to, and B. Want to target their damn general a lot. With Balan, you'll always be equipping for the low price of , allowing us to run Lightning Greaves and Whispersilk Cloak without fear.

2. Relevant Keyword Abilities

First strike on your voltron commander is always great, allowing them to survive a hell of lot more combats than usual. But Balan might as well just have double strike because that second is stupid easy to fulfill. Having access to double strike frees up a ton of slots in the deck so we can focus on buffing her, protecting her, and making her unblockable.

3. The Mana Cost

Thankfully, Balan hits that sweet spot at 4 mana and with only in the cost, can be reliably cast on turn 3 and definitely cast on turn 2 with a Sol Ring in hand.

Despite the disadvantage of being in monowhite, Balan allows you to take advantage of Caged Sun , Extraplanar Lens , etc. as well as Emeria, The Sky Ruin and Strata Scythe which is nice. Personally, I like the simplicity of a monocolor deck that in ways makes playing voltron a lot easier. To add, monowhite, as opposed to other monocolors, offers awesome cards for this strategy like Puresteel Paladin , Divine Reckoning , and Steelshaper's Gift .
