Commander / EDH* BUG (Sultai) Combo Mill

Intro

So this is 100% my take on the Persistent Petitioners build and I'm pleased to report that it has had some success so far..

This is my first breakdown and maybe after some iterations and more play-throughs I can actually do a primer on this. For now, I'll talk about some of the choices I've made and card interactions that are important to this deck.

Commander Choice

So I danced around with the commander choice for a bit. I ended up in Sultai with three choices: Muldrotha, the Gravetide , Sidisi, Brood Tyrant and Damia, Sage of Stone .

Many others seemed to have taken a different direction in commander choice with Azorius or Dimir with Phenax or Grand Arbiter Augustin but I think Sultai gives us the proper tutor/graveyard/mill/shenanigan packages that we are looking for.

Now the reason that I did not go with Muldrotha or Sidisi is that while there are some recursive elements in this build (I will go over these later), I did not want to lean too heavily upon that theme. By playing either of these two you emphasize the self-mill strategy more than I wanted to. These two seem incredibly viable though if we were to tweak the build to play out of the graveyard a bit more.

Damia is good because of the hand refill potential and her open-ended nature. You don't need her to win but she can help you cross the threshold if you ever run out of steam. She's pretty expensive at 7 CMC but I've been able to get value from her on the simple basis that people knee-jerk spot remove the petitioners once they start coming down. So, wasted removal turns to card draw opportunity for us!

Key Cards and Synergies

Recur

  • Bloodbond March -- Great card. Your opponents will waste so much spot removal on your guys early game. This card and the following two have massive blowout potential. The reason to run black at all is for these comeback cards.
  • Patriarch's Bidding -- One time use version of the above card. Still great in a pinch.
  • Living Death -- This card is better if we focus on filling our own yard but it STILL performs if you only have 4-8 petitioners in the yard.

Thrum

  • Thrumming Stone -- Resolve this and if you Ripple through the whole deck you can knock a single person out with a 96 card mill.
  • Intruder Alarm -- If you Ripple with this out the stack will get a little crazy but it will let you maximize the value of all the Ripples. There's probably a cute little equation we can put together to see the potential of this but basically the way this will work is you're going to be able to untap all the Petitioners upon ETB of each Ripple and use their mill ability in between each resolution of Ripples (I feel like we're saying Ripple a lot).
  • Mana Severance -- Might just thinking about increasing the Petitioner count to increase out odds but this will almost 100% ensure we can grab every Petitioner in our deck.

Untap

  • Murkfiend Liege -- If you can't play all your Petitioners in one turn, why not maximize their value!? I've had many games with only 4-5 out for the majority and these untappers turn the deck into a menace (albeit a bit more fair than playing 30 in one turn).
  • Seedborn Muse -- OG untapper on a stick.. if there was an EDH Card Hall of Fame I think she'd be in there.
  • Quest for Renewal -- Great card. Amazing turn 2 play especially if nobody knows what you're up to. Chances are your opponents will immediately target this once they know what the deck is about.
  • Riptide Chronologist -- Might cut this.. One-time use, not easily recur-able.

Alure

  • Aluren -- Now this card is pretty spicy and almost exclusively requires you to have the next card in the list for it to be REALLY busted. I have yet to attempt this but, I feel the amount of tutors in the deck make this two card combo okay to run.
  • Secret Salvage -- 5 mana draw ~30 cards??? OKAY THEN.

Anti-Anti-Mill Tech

  • Bitter Ordeal -- I know this is my only piece. I have lucked out in my metas where only a few people/decks run the titans or other graveyard shufflers. I'll discuss the addition of other pieces in the next section. In the meantime, this is a SWEET card.

Omissions, Maybeboard and Other Cards

  • Tormod's Crypt , Relic of Progenitus , Oona, Queen of the Fae , Sadistic Sacrament -- I'll be experimenting with the number of exilers to fit properly into the meta
  • Lim-Dul's Vault -- Love this card. I will be similarly experimenting with the amount of tutors. This is ultimately a combo deck and without tutors this deck would not be as fun to play.
  • Laboratory Maniac -- Don't want him anywhere near this deck. I think I would need to compromise some of direction of the deck currently but I understand that this is probably the best choice for winning against un-millable opponenents too.
