Ghave, Guru of Spores

Ghave has incredible potential as a commander, though he relies almost entirely on having saprolings active on the battlefield. There are many ways to get saprolings, but Ghave himself is the perfect source. His cost activated ability removes a counter from himself to create a saproling; however... there are a couple more combos.

Death's Presence + Ghave, Guru of Spores will negate the original 1/1 counter that you removed from him (especially if the creatures are more than 1/1 in power and toughness). Bouncing back and forth for mana can either be used to make a saproling, or add +1/+1 to Ghave himself, without any negatives.

Moving forward with the ability trick we listed above, Ghave is the perfect sac-outlet; giving you a very cheap and effective way to trigger all of your 'death' effects.

Deeper Synergy

You already know about lifegain when creatures enter the battlefield, as well as when they die. But there is a couple more things that can trigger when this occurs.

Cliffhaven Vampire for example will trigger anytime you gain life, effectively dealing small damage over-time to your opponents.
