Any Complicated Commanders?

Commander (EDH) forum

I've been fiending to play some more commander, but I only have one(!) deck irl right now, so I'm looking to branch out. I've always wanted a deck with a lot of moving parts, so does anyone have any suggestions? If it helps, I like decks with a bunch of synergy, but I don't care what that synergy is about. I can do control, beatdown, or just plain value. Thanks in advance!

Casual, or competitive? EDHrec is always the place to start, and if you're on a budget, I can't recommend Commander's Quarters on youtube enough.

Well slivers are the poster child for synergy. Or you could try Breya, Etherium Sculptor. Muldrotha, the Gravetide can do so many different things

Grubbernaut: I'm looking for a 75% deck, preferably on a budget. I'll look at EDHrec right away!

shadow63: Breya looks great! I already have a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant deck, so Muldrotha's probably off the table, but I've always wanted to build artifacts.

Dip your toes into Inalla, Archmage Ritualist . Look up wizard's chess with her. A lot of crazy lines and piles of interaction with her, which all require tight thinking to get along at first. And you will need time to master her I'd wager, so much time to spend on her possibly.

Here's a fun commander I just started building: Ormos, Archive Keeper . He's not an amazing card, so it's hard to take the power level too far, but you end up with 30+ card hands that you need to sequence right to pull of a win. Decently easy to keep on a budget, too!

See my (already budget-ized, contrary to the name) approach on him here--

Ormos needs so much support budget is futile help

I think the way that I ended building my deck around Yawgmoth, Thran Physician fits your description. It's a combo deck with a lot of moving parts & alternative ways to execute, and even to win using said combo..

If you want janky BS lines with high synergy, start with Salvaging Station . Pick whatever commander you want. You’ll build a Rube Goldberg machine in no time.

Mairsil, the Pretender . Best win con is Mirror-Mad Phantasm , Dread Return and Thassa's Oracle . Make sure not to include Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact if you're staying on lower power, but you can add them if you go cEDH.

Buried Alive , Gamble and Entomb are all really really good with Mairsil as lower-priced tutors.

You get tons of fun synergy, but the best things to have caged are Arcanis the Omnipotent , AEtherling , Staff of Domination , and Lazav, the Multifarious . Include Civilized Scholar  Flip and Necrotic Ooze , and you get another way to mill your deck with Scholar + Ooze/Lazav + Golgari Thug / Stinkweed Imp .

You can run infinite mana combos with Gilded Lotus and Quicksilver Elemental and any way to untap like Horseshoe Crab or Cinderhaze Wretch .

There's also a ton of random infinite loops possible with Mairsil, as well as great ways to get tons of value. You are really reliant on your commander, but then again you also only need to cast Mairsil again and you can get back into the game.

Oh, and Tim. Hell's Caretaker 's Legends printing art is awesome.

Awesome strats with Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas . With Liquidmetal coating. Anything can become an artifact creature. Any permanent thats being anoying, turn it into an artifact then to a creature and take it over or kill it. Very fun to do and different!!!

If you're looking for a deck with lots of moving parts and synergy, I would say go with an artifact deck. There are just so many combos. Breya, Etherium Shaper gives you an infinite mana outlet as well as 4 colors, so that's pretty good. But if you want an artifact commander that can be part of the combo instead of just the payoff, Sharuum the Hegemon is a forgotten one that has lots of combos due to how the legendary rule works. It's as janky and rule-bending as the Krark-Clan Ironworks combo in Modern was.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm definitely leaning towards artifacts or aristocrats now. Breya looks like the definitive artifact commander, so I'm probably going to go with her. Does anyone have any good artifacts for a Breya deck?

Sultai_Sir: Nim Deathmantle and Krark-Clan Ironworks come to mind for Breya. Out of curiosity (as another commander), have you thought about Kenrith, the Returned King ? I get that most of the time it's "get infinite mana, win from there", however he provides beatdown options, graveyard recursion, card draw all in one. And he gives you all 5 colours without having to force a specific strategy (unlike a commander like Sliver Overlord ). Since he has built in recursion as well, he would make an excellent aristocrats commander.

If you are looking for lots of moving parts Rube Goldberg Combo might interest you. Ghave, Guru of Spores (Ghave: Baby Makin' and Alimony) is a good commander for this. Tayam, Luminous Enigma (The "A" Team (Tayam Rube Goldberg Combo)) is a bit less powerful, and has more silly complicated interactions

Marisi, Breaker of the Coil can be very complex. Because the strategy & intuition behind making opponent's off each other or gifting opponents goes several layers beyond your own board state.

Sultai_Sir: Did I hear artifacts or aristocrats? Why not do both and play Lurrus of the Dream-Den ?

Wood Elves Tangle are some pretty good cards. Wood eles are way better than the Farhaven Elf . And that tangle keeps all theyre stuff tapped, can be a game winner. Killin fog.

There's the old KCI combo with Krark-Clan Ironworks , Scrap Trawler , Myr Retriever and any 0 mana rock or mana positive rock. There's also Ashnod's Altar , Nim Deathmantle , and Eldrazi Displacer combos involving your commander Breya that go infinite. You've got Time Sieve and Thopter Assembly as well as Sword of the Meek and Thopter Foundry . Skullclamp is great in general. You've got Pili-Pala and Grand Architect combos to use. Painter's Servant and Grindstone . Rings of Brighthearth , Zirda, the Dawnwaker , or Power Artifact get infinite mana with Grim Monolith or Basalt Monolith . For infinite sacrifice outlets, you can use Grinding Station , Blasting Station , or Disciple of the Vault . Since you're running black and red, you have access to combos with Worldgorger Dragon and Animate Dead , Dance of the Dead , or Necromancy (goes great with a sacrifice outlet out, too). Altar of the Brood may work well in a list you make. You can even do Dualcaster Mage with Ghostly Flicker and get infinite thopters with your commander and infinite mana to sacrifice them all to kill your opponents. Those are just some combos I came up with on the top of my head.
