This deck is a sub 200 dollar budget Light Paw I am working on. All of my knowledge comes from reading in the Light Paw discord, the primers by Wizard "https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-kakpkXxn0mikqfUDedKzg/primer" and the OG guide by Daedalus "https://www.moxfield.com/decks/b7JEv8j9d06-BicRKi2Lwg". I strongly recommend you check out their primers, as they provide a clear, in-depth explanation of all things Light Paws.
- Goal: To perform well in a high-power pod while staying under my listed budget.
- Plan: Get out LP as fast as possible with some protection. Then it is a race to kill the biggest threat to my commander, after which I target my other friends.
For the most part, I will be casting light paw on turn 3. I can see there will be some games where I may be able to get away with a t2 if I have some of the protection dorks like Giver of Runes already in play, or free protection with reverant Mantra in hand. To greed or not to greed? That is the question.
The following contains reference notes to help pilot the deck.
Damage buffs:
Ethereal Armor
All That Glitters
Idolized
DAMAGE "COMBOS":
Stoneskin + Gauntlets of Light OR Solid Footing
Sunbond OR Light of Promise + lifelink such as: Daybreak Coronet OR On Serra's Wings = pseudo Kalonian Hydra
Additionally, this combined with a double-strike enchantment leads to a phenomenon referred to as a "pseudo" triple strike. After declaring blockers, we go to the combat damage step. If a creature has first strike, it gets to do its damage in a special step before regular damage is dealt. With double strike, the creature deals both first strikes, and regular damage, dealing damage twice.
So, sunbond + lifelink + doublestrike = 1 normal attack, 1 double damage attack.
some notable searchable cards
And if I happen to be holding onto a silly amount of mana:
Cards that can't be tutored, but we love to have them.
Blacksmith's Skill, Galadriel's Dismissal, Karametra's Blessing, Loran's Escape, and Reverent Mantra, Skrelv, Defector Mite
Other cards of note:
Current concerns after my first RL play-testing in a 4-player pod. I either need to put some stax effects like Hushbringer in my deck or alter my removal package to contain less anti-creature and more enchantment hate. I don't want to run into another game where I get shut down by an Edgar Markov player with Grave Pact and a Skullclamp.
Post game edits:
- Edit: I removed Spirit Link for Flickerform. I did not need the lifelink. Flickerform will be useful in slower games to dodge edicts and farewells.
- Edit: I removed Guildscorn Ward for Hushbringer. I feel like I already have enough color protection. Hushbringer will stop the biggest sac offenders in my group.
- Edit: I removed Swift Reconfiguration for Sheltered by Ghosts. Swift was useless for me. Sheltered will provide valuable non-creature hate, lifelink and ward. Insane value.
Misc edits:
- Edit: I removed Artifact Ward for Conviction. Artifact ward isn't a protection needed in my playgroup. I feel like the value of conviction is way too good to pass up.
- Edit: I removed Angelic Gift for Feather of Flight as it is a direct upgrade.
- Edit: I removed Wayfarer's Bauble for Jeweled Amulet. Wayfare does not help me with my game plan, consuming both a t1 and a t2 play. It is far too slow. Jeweled will allow me to have a t2 cast of my commander, and keep an extra white mana for protection!
