Reverent Mantra

Instant

You may remove a white card in your hand from the game rather than pay Reverent Mantra's mana cost.

All creatures gain protection from the color of your choice until end of turn.

Some thoughts:

  • A bunch of your cards aren't modern-legal. They're all the one's highlighted in red, so Archangel of Strife, Exalted Angel, Noble Templar, Wizards of Thay, Decanter of Endless Water, Robe of the Archmagi, Sol Ring, Ascend from Avernus, Fountain of Cho, Seat of the Synod, Promise of Tomorrow, and Reverent Mantra.

  • You're playing a lot more cards than the 60 required. Any amount of cards over 60 reduces a decks consistency and generally makes it weaker - I'd suggest heavily on trying to cut back to 60 cards.

  • You're currently playing waaay too many cards as 1-ofs or 2-ofs. This is going to make your deck super inconsistent and clumsy to pilot. You should be aiming for the majority of your deck to be playsets (4-ofs) of cards. A good strategy for new deckbuilders is to pick 9 cards, and run playsets (4-ofs) of each of those (making 36 cards) alongside 24 lands (for a 60 card deck).

  • Your mana curve is waay too high. Most modern decks can't justify running more than 4 cards (1 playset) costing 4 mana, and seldom run anything costing more than this much mana. You've got a whopping 23 cards costing 4-or-more mana, which is far too much. Going from the above suggestion of picking 9 cards, the mana costs of those cards should look something like 1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4.

I am of two minds on this deck.

1) I am extremely fond of anyone who utilizes older, lesser-known creatures as a general of their deck.

2) The list itself seems incredibly janky.

Either way, I bloody love it!

For actual recommendations, I suppose I should grant a few.

Abolish is a card that people do not anticipate, thence I have gladly included it in some of my multi-coloured White lists. I would try it.

Reverent Mantra is just a splendid card. It nullifies a kill spell out of nowhere, all whilst being hilarious against certain wraths.

Just as a utility land, Hall of Heliod's Generosity is able to retrieve some fallen utility enchantments. Merely looping an Aura of Silence can be quite meritorious.

Lastly, I do not know how effective it would be in this list, but Balancing Act is my favourite wrath effect. Try it, then cut it.

I do hope this is of some aid.

For some older commanders of my own, I have a fair few.

Hazezon Tamar

Eladamri, Lord of Leaves

Adun Oakenshield

Bladewing the Risen

Good day to you.

Shabraz with a Shadowspear and/or Basilisk Collar could be hilarious as an alternative voltron win. We also forgot about Authority of the Consuls, Expedition Map, Commandeer and Sunscour are "free", Reverent Mantra could be used to protect Brallin while tapped out.

You might also look into some more advanced control options like Anguished Unmaking and/or Prison Term. I use Reverent Mantra to pretty decent effect in a couple of my Black/White builds where I've got important creatures to protect.

You could further augment some of those big attackers with things like Flickering Ward (to make them variably unblockable) or Spirit Mantle (which makes them TRULY unblockable).

Thank you.

I started playing Magic a month or so before Masques came out, so it's always had a kind of mystical aspect to me. Is that nostalgia speaking? Sure, somewhat. But in addition to really loving the 'feel' of the setting and the cards, I also had a familiarity with the cards that helps one better appreciate what was available. There are no shortage of superb cards running around in Masques - in addition to what you mentioned, and just off the top of my head, there's also Land Grant , Food Chain , Thwart , Soothsaying , Misdirection , Reverent Mantra , Unmask , Tower of the Magistrate , Haunted Crossroads , Pulverize as well as the last core printings of Dark Ritual and Brainstorm . Sure, the set had a few too many 4/4s for four mana with colosal drawbacks for my taste, too. But you still can't beat some of the inventive fun in Distorting Lens , Two-Headed Dragon and Foster .

Anyways, thanks for sticking up for the little guy as well. Masques is a fascinating set with a beautiful setting and interesting ideas, so it's nice to hear it spoken of in something other than biting vitriol for a change. Honestly, I'd just love to see any of the modern Type 2 decks try and stand a chance against a well-built Rising Waters deck from even Masques block constructed, you know?

Keep fighting the good fight!

Definitely Martyr of Sands for mono-white. I've had games where I've snagged 16-18 life on turn 2 using her. Mother of Runes, Reverent Mantra, and Flickering Ward are also very mana-efficient ways of keeping a key creature or two alive for those board-wipes you have in there. Protection from White on some attackers + any of your Sorceries there = Good Game. Winds of Rath and Wrath of God are some other nice lower-mana board wipes. Winds of Rath in particular makes it fairly easy to save creatures.
