Looks Like Meat's Back On The Menu, Boys

Commander / EDH Combo Competitive Mono-Black Suicide Black

Egdod

This deck uses Yawgmoth, Thran Physician to generate card advantage and control the board. To do this, Yawgmoth needs two things: Mana, and meat. The remaining 99 cards work to give him these things.

Concepts & card choices

These are the two ways this deck can win the game.
  1. Direct life-loss. This is chiefly made possible by all-stars like Gray Merchant of Asphodel , Exsanguinate , and Torment of Hailfire . The former benefits most from a recursion engine like Chainer, Dementia Master (with Yawgmoth himself fulfilling the role of sac outlet), and the latter is supported by the deck's multiple ramp sources.

  2. Good ol' fashioned turning creatures sideways. While this can be accomplished with some of my own creatures, it's more fun to loot opponents' creatures from their graveyards.

"Meat" is my term for the luckless chumps that are summoned just to be hurled into the abyss by the good doctor. Several of this deck's creatures make good meat because they replace themselves, recur themselves, or make extra copies of themselves. This deck likes to "go wide" with tokens and creatures, in order to trigger Yawgmoth's first ability whenever possible.
Due to the constantly evolving nature of decks, I won't be exhaustively documenting my reasons for including every single card in the list. I shouldn't need to explain why Damnation , Jet Medallion , or Dark Ritual are included in a mono-black deck. Here I'll elaborate on some of my inclusions that may seem unconventional or not immediately obvious.
  • Cranial Archive / Elixir of Immortality : Mono-black has no way that I'm aware of to return non-creature cards from the graveyard to anywhere. These are included for longer match-ups to reuse those cards, and to protect creatures from graveyard exile.

  • Dreadhorde Invasion / Mastermind's Acquisition : These are budget replacements for Bitterblossom and Demonic Tutor , respectively.

  • Phyrexian Altar / any other sac outlet - Normally this is one of my favorite cards for a mono-black deck. In this deck, however, Phyrexian Altar would compete with Yawgmoth for resources (meat). Drawing a card off a creature is more valuable than extracting B from it.

  • K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth - I really should have this guy, I know. And I'm considering it. But I feel like I already beat up on my life total enough.

  • Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder - While Endrek creates a lot of meat, he's too slow for my liking.

  • Kokusho, the Evening Star - Kokopuffs is a classic, but it only whittles opponents down by 5 life. Without Blade of Selves or guaranteed access to Chainer, it's more difficult to use him to the fullest.

  • Most any black spot removal or draw source - Yawgmoth does these already, at instant speed. Hero's Downfall is the noteable exception here because it targets planeswalkers.
