Apart from a couple of things, everything in the deck is built around the commander and his ability to discard a land card from hand to deal 3 damage to creature or player. A good chunk of the deck is land ramp, to get him out faster and keep him there. Things like gratuitus violence, Illusionist's Bracers and Grafted Exoskeleton provide extra damage from each bolt and Groundskeeper, Creeping Renaissance and Praetor's Council all get lands back to hand. Defense of the Heart lets me get out out a few on the bigger creatures for cheap and much earlier on, like vorniclex, unbrask or xenagos. Defense also limits players from putting out so many creatures so quickly and things like Storm Cauldron can really screw with opponents land bases and hand sizes
