my plan
K1LR0Y, 11 years ago
ok people have been saying i need serra assendant......and they are right i do......but this is my first modern deck and is a starting point for me. i plan on getting them as well as all the other cards in a normal soul sisters list AFTER i make this. this is meant to get me into modern, have a modern deck that can do something, and be a starting point for the non-budget list. i have sited my non-budget version in the description.......i plan on making that version or something very close to it once this is finished

As a prelude to putting money into the deck online, I decided to borrow the physical deck and give it a whirl. My friend's not a sideboard user (in spite of my best efforts), so I tossed together the initial one above (4 Auramancer, 4 Centaur Healer, 3 Pithing Needle, 4 Sundering Growth). Only change was that due to access, two Voyaging Satyr were used in place of Sylvan Caryatid.
- vs Golgari Something ~ These games were short, so I couldn't even tell what he was playing. Deck decided to make a strong opening for the night by flooding out like a madman. Overall, probably three lands per nonland while kill spells ensured I was getting smacked by a couple little critters. (0-2)
- vs Izzet PyroControl ~ First game was a loooong one. Killed his Pyromancer (a la Soul Tithe) before it could do much damage, and with his control, it took a while for anything but Angelic Accord to stick. Eventually it came down to cracking a Grove of the Guardian with Trostani and two Accords out to win this one. With little time on the clock, I sided in both creatures and went aggro mode. It worked. (2-0)
- vs Gruul Devotion Aggro ~ God hand for game one. T2 EoT (him tapped out) Selesnya Charm for a Knight, followed by T3 Unflinching Courage
and T4 Angelic Accord. On the defensive, he managed to kill the Knight, but it was immediately followed by another Courage on the first Angel. Second game was longer, with Soul Tithe mucking up his ramp and myself on the defensive (and below ten life multiple times) until I could stabilize. Trostani + Courage is better than I thought. (2-0)
- vs Dimir Control ~ He flooded out game one, which let me pseudo-combo-off rather quickly. Game two was longer, with most of my threats not living too long. Still, three Trading Post and an Angelic Accord managed to stick. Between getting all that out, we played a silly game: He cast Soul Ransom on Trostani, Selesnya's Voice, and I followed it up with Soul Tithe on the Ransom. Goats ended up chumping her for the rest of the game after he put a Hands of Binding, Puppet Strings, and Dark Favor on the poor Dryad. (2-0)
That match one flood ended up slaughtering my tie-breakers, and I barely missed Top 8. Still netted a booster pack for my troubles. Plus another pack for just playing the event, I'd say I got my money's worth out of the $6 entry fee.
Thoughts:
The night helped build confidence in the deck. While I haven't tested / taken on the likes of Mono-Black or Blue Devotion, I think this could at least put on a show. Soul Tithe was a house and screwed up many an opposing plan, which is just what I wanted to see out of it.
And most importantly, I enjoyed myself.

General Update
TheGodofNight, 11 years ago
I finally received my Underworld Conections, very excited. Unfortunately, weather did not permit a trip to my local game shop to test out the deck with the new cards in. :( I did however play some games at home with friends. i play against a pair of Modern decks (One Affinity and one homebrew demon thing), a R/B Super Fast Aggro Deck, and an Esper Mill Control Deck. The deck plays like a champ, gain tons of life. The Mill deck was the most challenging because it milled large chunks of my deck out, thwarting my advances in some cases. Overall though, I am very happy with this little beast, it gains life, then it gains more life, then I kill my opponent's life total. If you enjoy crazy lifegain, lots of card draw (thanks Underworld Connections), and you have a fondness for Orzhov, then this might be the deck for you. Your feedback and questions are greatly appreciated.

Mid pack finish

Went 2-2 this weekend with losses to a white red aggro and a USA control that I still have no answers to the lack of creature based control. (Thinking of Pithing Needle )
My wins came against an orzhov deck and a golgari gorgon deck. The latter was a fun deck that jut kept bringing back everything I killed. I may bench the deck for a week to try out another deck.

The final stages

This was the final version of this brew, I got it to 3rd at FNM, and I was overall happy with how it did. I will be decommissioning it this week and starting on my Esper Humans brew.
Deck Adjustments
The_Angry_Man, 11 years ago
- A good friend of mine who runs the LGS loaned me a Draining Whelk which I swapped with the Soul of the Harvest.
- Same friend also loaned me his copy of Frost Titan which replaced the Carven Caryatid.
- I also replaced Sphinx of Uthuun with Venser, the Sojourner
to provide additional "blinkers" - plus, Venser can blink *any* permanent I control...
- Added Blazing Archon to "cover my butt" while I get Roon's pals on the board....however, with a CMC of 9, I may have to opt for a Crawlspace with a CMC of 3.
- While Recurring Insight may be useful, it was hard not to add Thragtusk for life-gain and token shenanigans, especially if Suture Priest is on the field...
- Removed Borderland Ranger, Hunting Moa and Mnemonic Wall...
- Added the Strionic Resonator, so generously provided to me by a new friend from the LGS...tks, J!

Playtest update

Mainboard: Underworld Connections->Erebos, God of the Dead
Does a similar thing, just more. Very solid against any type of lifegain deck and gives another scary creature to play with.
Sideboard: Blind Obedience->Erebos, God of the Dead: for when I really need Erebos.
Duress->Sin Collector I like this a lot, does a similar thing just leaves my board state in a better place. In addition, works well with Gift of Immortality.

Went 3-1 at FNM. I forgot the matchups, but I forgot to put my lifebane zombies in my sideboard after experimenting with some mono black decks, but other than that it went super. My only loss was against Orzhov Humans, with their Imposing Sovereign and Soldier of the Pantheon, and I lost in 3. Still great games, and fun was still had. 3-1 was a new record for me, and I'm hoping to improve over the next few years in my MTG career.

I tested the deck out with the changes I made and I decided drawing only 21 lands is a little slow so I took out 1 Gray Merchant of Asphodel and added a swamp need the black mana on turn 2. I also took out 3 Commune with the Gods and replaced them with 1 Abhorrent Overlord 1 Collective Blessing and 1 Gray Merchant of Asphodel these are just side board bombs I took out Commune with the Gods because I have enough milling with Grisly Salvage and Deadbridge Chant so I can grab more bombs with both of those cards and grab lands with Grisly Salvage if I need them

swapped the spear for the bidents bidents are better for control matchup tho took out a sphinx's rev for a different sphinx took out the counter spells for a rapid hybrid for some bigger creatures and for the blood baron problems and the other 2 counterspells were turned into cyclonic rifts for clearing board etc and lyev skynight replaced borors reckoner for serving same role but less of a mana impact still testing if i should use it or switch to fiendslayer

In its second FNM play the deck went 2-1( i added two polukranos after the tourney). I play a mono white devotion deck( it was kinda janky), a very scary 3 color sliver deck( the player wasn't very good) and probably the best player and top deck at the tourney a mono blue devotion deck. I beat the first two 2-0, 2-0, then I lost to the mono blue 2-0 however I didn't have the play set of mistcutters to sideboard but now i do. Plus side I really wanted to play against a top tier deck and I know that this deck can beat the mono blue( i took him down to 1 life in a friendly and was one turn away from winning).

put the planewalkers back in here and Nemesis of Reason to give me more win conditions. Jace, Memory Adept is just an amazing mill engine.

Beat a White Devotion deck. Lost the first game, but rallied and came back. Boarding in the third Cyclonic Rift and the 2 Domestication was really good.
Next matchup, lost to a White Weenie deck. Second game was dominant on board but with no Thassa, God of the Sea so had to chip away. Had not inkling he boarded in a Planar Cleansing which was a good surprise play that stole the game, and match.
Final matchup i beat a JUNK deck which was essentially a Selesnya Aggro deck with black for removal. Wound up winning in two but one game got to live the dream. After a back and forth i am barely stabilized, top decking to stay alive. i am keeping a Master Biomancer alive and playing every creature i can, and trying to block as profitably as i can. i pull a second Biomancer, it sticks. Then next turn i draw and chase it with a Master of Waves, with 3 token coming out with 6 counters.
Saucy...
