The First FNM- Got 1st Place
BurnTheSkylite, 11 years ago
I went through all of my games with ease, all of my wins were 2-0 except for one (four rounds).
Round One Orzhov: Had a lot of enchantments, won very easily just sided in Last Breath
Round Two Red Deck Wins: Very hard, he barely pulled round one with Fanatic of Mogis, second game was tough had to fight Burning Earth with three basic lands and one life, I used the Elixer of Immortality three times, got the ultimate off Jace, Architect of Thought. Third game was a breeze got another ultimate off of Jace, Architect of Thought to stop Burning Earth.
Round Three Golgari Midrange: First game he had a slow land start and I once again used Jace, Architect of Thoughts ultimate to steal is Vraska the Unseen and win with her ultimate. Second game he had a good start, but I just had answers.
Round Four Black-Red-White Control: First game he got me to 6 fast but I Sphinx's Revelationed and played my win condition and he had used up his entire hand. Second game he couldn't find a removal spell (probably since he sided out due to me not having a lot of creatures) and I ran him over with Advent of the Wurm.
Changes: -2 Prognostic Sphinx, +1 AEtherling, -1 Mystic Genesis +1 Render Silent +1 Simic Charm
-2 Essence Scatter, -1 Glare of Heresy, +3 Last Breath in the sideboard.

3-2 FNM (Top Eight) @ XtremeGames

Match 1: Golgari 2-0 -Playing some sort of Golgari deck and half of his cards weren't even standard. His deck had no real focusand it was a easy 2-0. He seemed pretty new so I was nice to him and didn't want him to get totally DQ'd from tournament so hopefully he talked to a judge.
Match 2: Boros Weenies 0-2 -Game 1 I kept a greedy hand with only 2 land and no mana ramps. On the otherhand, he got a perfect and and killed me on turn 4. -Game 2 I kept a hand with mana and an Elvish Mystic but his deck was too fast and I didn't draw into any removal and lost turn 5.
Match 3: Golgari Midrange 2-0 -Game 1 He got mana screwed and I had a regular game with destroying his 3rd land on turn 3 and and Xenagos, the Reveler finishing it up with 3 Satyrs. -Game 2 He mulligan'd to 5 and a 1 land hand. I drew into perfect ramp with a Stormbreath Dragon on turn 3 and another on turn 4 with him ending up scooping.
Match 4: Grixis Control 2-1 -Game 1 I shut him out with a Xenagos, the Reveler and multiple Demolish and Bramblecrush. -Game 2 He negated 2 Bramblecrush and a Demolish and I misplayed since I let him turn his Lazav, Dimir Mastermind into and Ember Swallower after he Syncopated it (It should have been exiled, not moved into graveyard). At that time I already had an Ember Swallower on the field and would've won in the next 2 turns but he stalled out and beat me. -Game 3 He kept a 2 land hand while I had 2 Elvish Mystic and didn't miss a land drop. I Demolish one of his 2 lands and finished off with an Ember Swallower and a Stormbreath Dragon
At this time I was 3-1 and was 8th seed.
Game 5 Golgari Ramp 0-2 Game 1: He drew a godhand and was swinging for 48 on turn 4 with 2 Kalonian Hydra Game 2: He got a super fat Lotleth Troll combo'd with a Corpsejack Menace. I drew into no removal and got swept really fast.
Just got the cards to make this deck and did very well especially since I played without a Sideboard. Need to build sideboard to help against ramp decks since destroying their land means nothing to them.

Major change as I finally got my Temple Gardens and Smiters. FNM @ 2014 01/03 Game 1 - Won 2-1 (I lost the first round due to Erebos not letting me gain life and Gray Merchant finishing the job ) Game 2 - Lost 2-0 (Lost against white weenie. Round One got destroyed by fliers and couldn't race. Round 2 my only creature got Glare of Heresy'd) Game 3 - Won 2-0 (Mono Blue devotion. Used Polukranos to kill the Master of Waves when it looked ugly and used legend rule to use polukranos again to kill the next Master)

-Imperial Hellkite, + Mycoloth
I took out Imperial Hellkite because he's a very expensive tutor for 11 mana. Mycoloth for saprolings... everywhere.
Deck may become a Devour/Dragon hybrid, but we'll see.

[[Isochron Scepter]]
Jinta87, 11 years ago
After some extensive play testing, I found there was absolutely no reason to not play 4 Isochron Scepter. There's 18 instant spells, and being able to cast Boros Charm and Path to Exile Over and over and over, is just a fantastic plus. I played this deck against a legacy Artifact Arcbound Ravager deck and it did fantastic for removal of the artifact type creatures. Granted, Path to Exile Gets them land, but when you can consistently reuse the instants in this deck, like Boros Charm
to make all your permanents indestructible, or even Brave the Elements to give your creatures protection over and over, it makes it great for support.
I found the best things to use Isochron Scepter on was the Boros Charm and Path to Exile with Lightning Helix and Brave the Elements as my secondary choices. Using Boros Charm
on the scepter in conjunction with Path to Exile Fairly much insures you have answers to most things that people can throw at you. ((Aka, indestructible and creature removal)) and you don't really have to worry about giving them basic lands at that point.

I want to make this deck competitive. Give me suggestions please.

Changelong (started 12/29/2013) 12/29/13 - Removed: *Progenitor Mimic*, *Molten Tail Masticore*, and *Living Death*. Added *Whip of Erebos*, *Bonehoard*, and *Pack Rat*. I wanted to try something new in an artifact slot, and Molten Tail has been cool and underwhelming all at once. I hope *Bonehoard* fixes this. Progenitor Mimic is def. sweet and saucy but Whip of Erebos lets me grab stuff out of the yard in a pinch and is an artifact, so it can be grabbed by Academy Ruins. Should be overall more useful than Progenitor Mimic. Living Death is not on the flashback plan, is super cool but a dead card in the deck. I wanted to add a live card in *Pack Rat*. It's also a way to discard dredgers. 1/3/14 Removed: *Compulsion*, *Worm Harvest*, *Gaea's Revenge*, and *Seedborn Muse*. Added *Woodfall Primus*, *Chainer's Edict*, *Phyrexian Ingester*, and *Pithing Needle*. Worm Harvest, while amazing in a dredge deck, has never been an efficient use of mana for me in Commander. I replaced this sorcery with another, in Chainer's Edict. It's foil FTV:20 (+1 (!!) ) and it has flashback. Plus it removes creatures and is competitively costed out of the hand. It's also easily castable with Cabal Coffers. Gaea's Revenge was removed for a beater with an ETB effect in Phyrexian Ingester. Ingester is a card I love and I managed to pick up a cool foil of him. Seedborn Muse was exchanged for another green fatty in Woodfall Primus. Woodfall is an amazing card, and Seedborn is even better, but it ended up being win more 95% of the time. In the 5% other of the time, it painted too large a target on my head and was pretty terrible. I may replace it with Prophet of Kruphix if I can stumble upon a foil one. Took out Compulsion for Pithing Needle. While my needle isn't foil (yet), it was important to me to get a hold of another tutorable, recurrable hate card against irritating cards. It's important to realize that all of the ETB creatures that were put in work well with Whip of Erebos. I may put Nightveil in the Deck soon, as well as a Nykthos if I can get my hands on one. Both seem pretty sweet and fun.

A note on how to play this deck
EchoSi3rra, 11 years ago
Step 1: Ramp Step 2: Play Borborygmos and warn your opponents about making him angry Step 3: Load your hand with lands and scowl at your opponents Step 4: If someone tries to kill Borborygmos, grunt and throw lands at them (bonus points if you actually throw the cards)

Tweaked
Alcupwn, 11 years ago
Took out Butcher of Malakir due to high mana cost. Replaced 2X Semblance Anvil because it was unrealistic because I don't have a lot of high costing creatures. Dropped Whip of Erebos for conflicting schemes, focusing on spot removal not life gain.
ADDED: Enchantments Including Grave Pact and Oversold Cemetery

3-1 @ FNM
Match 1: Lost to a delver deck that countered every single thing that I managed to get on the field. Lost 2-0 Match 2: Mono-Red burn, they got mana flooded both games and I managed to squeak by 2-0. Match 3: Played against a white devotion deck. I never went below 20 life and swept them 2-0. Match 4: Played elves. First off, I hate elf decks and this one was no exception. With a fast game one win my opponent sided in some anti-burn cards that made the second game quite difficult. They got me down to ten life before I drew a Path to Exile and started to whittle down their defenses. I won the round 2-0.

Took another FNM! This marks this deck's fourth win and I WILL be rocking this for a game day event, if there is one coming up. First round was Mono-White. It has become quite routine, playing against this and so so many identical decks. Supreme Verdict them Aetherling for the win. She caught me offguard with a flying fabled hero in the second game, but got the doom blades in to recover. 2-1 Round two was red/green devotion. I totally needed to side board against this foe. He ran many small creatures and brought out the big ones with devotion to green. Same method, though.. Supreme verdict, then hit them back. Doom blades went in again, which tells me that I may need to start main decking them. 2-1 Round three was white/blue. First game, he had to mulligan down to 5 cards and that's always a good advantage to me. I usually take over games when they lose their hand. This game went 2-0. I had to much creature control against his half-creature, half-pump deck. Round four was mono-blue with thassa. This game was back and forth. It became another control game after the first win. I immediately dropped down Aetherling on turn 7 and he scooped the following turn. Gainsays and a couple doom blades went in. He pulled the second game. Last game in this match-up was clinching. Aetherling made all the difference against this opponent. Last round was red/green again...same player. He conceded, so we can split the packs. =] FNM Win Count at 20!!!

Against Jund - Won vs Jund
emask, 11 years ago
Beat a typical Jund brew. Well, an older one with the banned Bloodbraid Elf still being played. Won in 2-0 playing on the draw each time for a disadvantage. Definitely want your removal here! Deft Duelist was nice with shroud. Beware of Maelstrom Pulse and your Vexing Devil! Love Remand in this matchup! But beware, Bloodbraid Elf will still cascade! Which I guess isn't much an issue now that it's banned...So just a general caution for cascade and storm!
Things are still going well. Looking forward to more.
UWR Matchup Ideas - Won vs UWR
emask, 11 years ago
Really lovin' Deft Duelist in this matchup. I might consider siding out the Vexing combo-ish pieces while playing against the more typical UWR lists and add more utility cards. Find it becomes a battle of removal here. Deft Duelist really helps make them think about a Geist of Saint Traft attack. Might side in some Boros Charm if they're heavy on removal and wipes.
Thanks for 20 Upvotes! So far so good!

Dropped Forsaken City, too janky. Picked up a Thespian's Stage instead. Also considering new cards for Isochron Scepter. Bound / Determined perhaps?

Tonight @FNM!!
B_Goram, 11 years ago
Very well this evening!!! 2-1 vs RG tron. Emrakul didn't come in time!! Also a flood of removal on Karn and other think. Than, assemble the legion saved the day. 2-1 vs Jund aggro. First game lands didn't help me. So i gave up at turn six ... The Second game was amazing, totally controlled the opponent, then, assemble the legion, Hero of bladehold and dragonshifted for the glory. Epic. game three, just Bolt,Bolt, geist, and so on. Closed on turn six. 1-2 against a really freak deck, DREDGEVINE. My deck did extremely well, removing anything!! But, all the think That i burn or counter come back with haste!!! No way. just a mana lock for him on second game, so I could be able to attack with the bladehold. ( definitely need some graveyard hate!!! ) As Usual, +1 and suggestions are really appreciated!!!!

Oh My Heliod (i'm so sorry, i had to) 100 upvotes! That's insane, i never would have imagined this deck would have gained this much love. As far as i'm aware, this deck is one of the most popular standard decks on the site. Thank you all, maybe this is a good sign that i'll get a good place at my next FNM i'm getting closer!
