First FNM Test

Trollwald, 11 years ago

After testing the deck on FNM yesterday, I made severeal changes. The deck played out quite well, won 3 of 5 matches, and it was my first FNM ever in Standard.

Legion Loyalist played out really well, so I put it up to four. I was able to attack almost every first turn. Spark Trooper was actually better than I thought, rescued me several times due to the lifelink. And playing him while with two battallion creatures already out is REALLY satisfiying :-) That's why I put it up to four also.

I caught me boarding Boros Elite for Soldier of Pantheon multiple times, so I removed Boros Elite entirely.

Although I put in two Chandra's Phoenix as suggested by several people for more speed and aggresiveness. But I had to remove the Frontline Medic for it, they are now sideboard instead. But I think it might work out, becouse the indestructibility seems not that important than making damage quickly, and Chandra's Phoenix is my only card with evasion.

So the whole deck is a bit more aggressive now I think, and more red than white now, with some more burn added. Brave the Elements is only sideboard now. I also added Chained to the Rocks to the sideboard, because I had big trouble with some big Selesnya creatures and a demon in the only matches I have lost.

changed 4x Ponderfor 3x Think Twice, during a tournament, turns out that ponder is not modern legal, it kind of messed up my game lol...I still don't know what to add, probably another delver of secrets, meanwhile I'll put one card from the SB

Comments cleared.

Dropped the Tormented Heros for Young Pyromancers. Switched out some of the enchantments into control/burn instants for those pyromancers. Ogre Battledrivers for the tokens. Have yet to playtest the new deck at all, but would love some input on what anyone might think.

Thanks!

Played my friend with my old deck and i lost 8-1. That was a Shut-Out/Mill deck. I'm wanting to put in some money and turn it into this deck. I have a few of the cards above coming my way so i'll let you know how it works out!

Took this to a legacy tribal tournament. Got trashed hard! Goodbye assassins. Welcome back Highborns.

Neobender, 11 years ago

Took out Burning trees and Nylea. Devotion was never really the focus, and giving trample to arbor colossus and polukranos was never relevant.

Need to remove 1x Chandra, Pyromaster, because she isn't mine, and her owner wants it back. Think I need more 1-drops, so I will add 1x Legion Loyalist as soon as I will buy him

Also I need 2x Burning-Tree Emissary, will put them instead of 2x Shock

Well ,I took out the Goldnight Redeemers because I decided that by the time I would be able to play it there would be so much more to play that would be better. I traded it out with some Angelic Skirmishers in case I do not draw Arkoma's Memorial early in the game. Finally, I took out some land to make it a total of 22 lands, and switched it out with Descendant's Paths so that I can (hopefully) get powerful angels out rather quickly.

Just recently went undefeated in FNM 7-0 out of 4 rounds (could only fit 1 game in on one of the rounds). It had decent speed compared to other control decks, and stood up to mid-aggro very well. I didn't even have all my cards together. I was missing 1x Detention Sphere and 3x Sphinx's Revelation, which I switched out for 1x AEtherling (from sideboard, then put 1x Renounce the Guilds into sideboard), 2x Oppurtunity, and 1x Inspiration.

ROUND 1

RAKDOS AGGRO VS MONO BLUE

Game 1: Opened with just only Rakdos Shred-Freak and Rakdos Cackler. My opponent then proceed to play two Tidebinder Mage. Didn't top deck any removal so when Thassa, God of the Sea came down the deck was effectively able to beat me to death.

Sideboard

Game 2: Opened with a Whip of Erebos and two lands and plenty of removal. The goal was to kill his creatures play Whip of Erebos then proceed to out race him. Unfortunately he was able to resolve and activate Thassa, God of the Sea and I never drew enough lands to play Whip of Erebos. Once again he beat me to death.

LOST IN 2

ROUND 2

RAKDOS AGGRO VS DIMIR MILL

Game 1: Opened with 2 lands and 5 creatures. My opponent wasn't carrying enough removal and I quickly breezed to victory.

Sideboard

  • 3 Madcap Skills out

  • 3 Duress in

Game 2 Opened with another aggressive hand plus an Xathrid Necromancer and my opponent unfortunately had to mulligan down to five. This wasn't as much of a walk in a park though. After two Breaking / Entering he dropped Wight of Precinct Six which I was only barely able to play around thanks to Xathrid Necromancer being able to provide chump blockers and offensive force followed by Lightning Strike to seal the deal.

VICTORY IN 2

ROUND 3

RAKDOS AGGRO VS GOLGARI MIDRANGE

Game 1: Opened with a mediocre hand of 4 lands to 3 creatures. Unfortunately he resolved Kalonian Tucker turn 2, Polukranos, World Eater turn 3, and Deadbridge Goliath turn 4. Without Mogis's Marauder or Dreadbore I could not get around his superior creatures which then proceeded to beat me to death.

Sideboard

Game 2: Opened with a very aggressive hand consisting of 2 lands and 5 creatures. My opponent resolved a Lotleth Troll turn 3 but by that point I had enough creatures on deck to finish the job.

Game 3: Opened with another aggressive hand of 1 land and 6 creatures. I drew into my land and held my 2 drops till after Ratchet Bomb took Spike Jester then continued on to victory.

VICTORY IN 3

ROUND 4

RAKDOS AGGRO VS MONO BLUE

Game 1: Double Tidebinder Mage continued to prove to be a very powerful threat to my odds to success and I couldn't stop Thassa, God of the Sea.

Sideboard

Game 2: Was able to blitz through with turn 1 Rakdos Cackler, turn 2 Spike Jester and turn 3 Mogis's Marauder. My opponent also did not have enough lands to resolve removal.

Game 3: Started with Rakdos Cackler and Spike Jester swinging for 5 on turn 2. My opponent traded his Mutavault against Spike Jester and being a land a head I was able to stay ahead of Jace, Architect of Thought and Master of Wavesfoil.

VICTORY IN 3

ROUND 5

RAKDOS AGGRO VS SELESNYA AGGRO

Game 1: Blitzed with Rakdos Cackler, Spike Jester and Mogis's Marauder. Advent of the Wurm put up a lot of resistance but top decking Dreadbore allowed my creatures to finish the job.

Sideboard

Game 2: Kept a bad hand in retrospect. Without the red sources to cast Ash Zealot I was unable to stop Voice of Resurgence. Advent of the Wurm also proved to be a very large problem without removal.

Game 3: This was a close match which I owe to whip of erebus. I was able to keep him off me with with removal and a well timed Lightning Strike sealed the deal.

VICTORY IN 3

my plan

K1LR0Y, 11 years ago

ok people have been saying i need serra assendant......and they are right i do......but this is my first modern deck and is a starting point for me. i plan on getting them as well as all the other cards in a normal soul sisters list AFTER i make this. this is meant to get me into modern, have a modern deck that can do something, and be a starting point for the non-budget list. i have sited my non-budget version in the description.......i plan on making that version or something very close to it once this is finished

9th @ FNM 1/3 (3-1)

GureiSeion, 11 years ago

As a prelude to putting money into the deck online, I decided to borrow the physical deck and give it a whirl. My friend's not a sideboard user (in spite of my best efforts), so I tossed together the initial one above (4 Auramancer, 4 Centaur Healer, 3 Pithing Needle, 4 Sundering Growth). Only change was that due to access, two Voyaging Satyr were used in place of Sylvan Caryatid.

  • vs Golgari Something ~ These games were short, so I couldn't even tell what he was playing. Deck decided to make a strong opening for the night by flooding out like a madman. Overall, probably three lands per nonland while kill spells ensured I was getting smacked by a couple little critters. (0-2)
  • vs Izzet PyroControl ~ First game was a loooong one. Killed his Pyromancer (a la Soul Tithe) before it could do much damage, and with his control, it took a while for anything but Angelic Accord to stick. Eventually it came down to cracking a Grove of the Guardian with Trostani and two Accords out to win this one. With little time on the clock, I sided in both creatures and went aggro mode. It worked. (2-0)
  • vs Gruul Devotion Aggro ~ God hand for game one. T2 EoT (him tapped out) Selesnya Charm for a Knight, followed by T3 Unflinching Couragefoil and T4 Angelic Accord. On the defensive, he managed to kill the Knight, but it was immediately followed by another Courage on the first Angel. Second game was longer, with Soul Tithe mucking up his ramp and myself on the defensive (and below ten life multiple times) until I could stabilize. Trostani + Courage is better than I thought. (2-0)
  • vs Dimir Control ~ He flooded out game one, which let me pseudo-combo-off rather quickly. Game two was longer, with most of my threats not living too long. Still, three Trading Post and an Angelic Accord managed to stick. Between getting all that out, we played a silly game: He cast Soul Ransom on Trostani, Selesnya's Voice, and I followed it up with Soul Tithe on the Ransom. Goats ended up chumping her for the rest of the game after he put a Hands of Binding, Puppet Strings, and Dark Favor on the poor Dryad. (2-0)

That match one flood ended up slaughtering my tie-breakers, and I barely missed Top 8. Still netted a booster pack for my troubles. Plus another pack for just playing the event, I'd say I got my money's worth out of the $6 entry fee.

Thoughts:
The night helped build confidence in the deck. While I haven't tested / taken on the likes of Mono-Black or Blue Devotion, I think this could at least put on a show. Soul Tithe was a house and screwed up many an opposing plan, which is just what I wanted to see out of it.
And most importantly, I enjoyed myself.
