The Ur-Dragon

Legendary Creature — Dragon Avatar

Eminince — As long as The Ur-Dragon is in the command zone or on the battlefield, other Dragon spells you cast cost less to cast.

Flying

Whenever one or more Dragons you control attack, draw that many cards, then you may put a permanent card from your hand onto the battlefield.

So like I can't choose Savage Ventmaw because it doesn't have "Dragon" in it's name, but The Ur-Dragon would suffice?

Profet93 You would think I would need to add more mana rocks, but honestly it has not been much of a problem getting The Ur-Dragon in to the battlefield. Ancient Copper Dragon, Cavern-Hoard Dragon, Decadent Dragon, Goldspan Dragon, Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient, Morophon, the Boundless, Old Gnawbone, Rivaz of the Claw and Sarkhan, Soul Aflame all work very well as mana ramp in this deck.

I have tested creatures/cards like that in the past and don't like the staying power or what they are adding to this deck. The creature versions get board-wiped the fastest and don't tend to extend the deck past extra mana available, so I prefer to start getting bigger game impact dragons out and only ramp via land ramp and some artifacts. Mainly to help with my mana fixing, draw, and one sided board-wipes. See the list of cards that those would not interact with other than Scaled Nurturer, that one gets the dragon pass but not card draw and would take up one of the 30 dragon slots. Garruk's Uprising, Elemental Bond, Frontier Siege, Wrathful Red Dragon, Silumgar, the Drifting Death, Rith, Liberated Primeval, Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm, Lathliss, Dragon Queen, Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury, Ganax, Astral Hunter, Firkraag, Cunning Instigator, Dromoka, the Eternal, Bladewing the Risen, Atarka, World Render, Haven of the Spirit Dragon, Relic of Legends, Jade Orb of Dragonkind, Carnelian Orb of Dragonkind, Crux of Fate, The Ur-Dragon

So 20 cards or 1/5th of the deck that those would not extend or interact with. Here is a link for some statistics for mana reducers that basically says if you can play cards every turn and use all mana you have as well then they work the best in those types of decks.

Form about this topic https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/comments/b3stji/cost_reducers_vs_ramp/

Thanks for the comments! Hope this gives some insight on my deck building/playing style and if you run those mana dorks/cost reducers, I think cards like can help and, I do run them in other decks with less colors or better card draw. I do think a commander like Tiamat would benefit from those to help play the tutored cards after cast and help commander tax to recast it and refill your hand. The main thing I consider is what am I swapping, and in this deck and it's mana fixing for a 5 color deck on a 50$ budget, or a potential dragon slot for a deck that wants dragons on the field attacking to start getting ramped up.

I will continue to update this deck and work to give better descriptions of my other decks as well as I build and update my commander arsenal!

DrukenReaps on Eminence: Do you like it …

I've played against all the eminence commanders and played with a few. I think both Inalla, Archmage Ritualist and Edgar Markov were a ...bit much.

The others being Oloro, Ageless Ascetic, Arahbo, Roar of the World, and The Ur-Dragon always seemed strong but fine to me. Their real value not coming until they are in play.

The new one drawing and discarding seems like it has the potential to lean more towards the first group imo. Drawing on a commander always seems woefully undervalued by so many... Though it isn't just straight card advantage so maybe it'll be another strong but fine commander. People will actually want to play it in order to get real value out of it.

Overall I think any card with eminence is going to be playing with fire but not any more so than say storm or infect. It'd be easy to go overboard with the effect but there are many other effects that provide only mild value. Regardless folks will likely get targeted even if they played the absolute weakest eminence ability. I think the heat it can attract will balance it out at any table.

DemonDragonJ on Commander Masters Previews and Speculation

WotC has officially announced that there shall be a Commander Masters set, so let us begin speculating about it!

Thus far, only three cards have been revealed, but they are all excellent, so I am hoping that the remainder of the set shall be comparable.

If The Ur-Dragon is being reprinted (and it needs to be), I also would like to see Edgar Markov reprinted, because he also is expensive, as well as Oloro, Ageless Ascetic, mainly because he has never been reprinted (except as a judge promo), so I would like to see him in the new card frame.

Given that Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, and Smothering Tithe were all reprinted, recently, I would like to see Esper Sentinel reprinted, mainly to keep its price low and availability high.

I have said this, before, but I shall again pray for reprints of Book of Rass and Claws of Gix, mainly to see them in the new frame.

Sol Ring and Command Tower are almost certain to be in this set, but I also would like to see Reflecting Pool and Chromatic Lantern, to keep their prices low.

Akroma's Memorial, Mirari's Wake, and Privileged Position would all be great, as well.

What does everyone else say about this? What card would you like to see reprinted in Commander Masters?

Have you considered The Ur-Dragon as a commander?

Some thoughts:

  • A bunch of these cards aren't modern legal - specifically Ancient Brass Dragon, Ancient Copper Dragon, Jolene, the Plunder Queen, Ramos, Dragon Engine, The Ur-Dragon, Monster Manual, Vexing Puzzlebox, Sivitri, Dragon Master, Burgeoning, Court of Bounty, and Demonic Tutor.

  • Your mana curve is very high here. Pretty much all Modern decks can’t justify running more than 3-4 cards costing 4 mana, and run nothing above this. Your deck has a whopping 31 cards costing 4-or-more mana, which is faar too much, and will lead to some really, really slow/clumsy plays.

  • 12 lands is criminally low. As reference, Burn decks play 20 lands and only play cards costing 1-2 mana. Your deck in particular looks like it needs a lot of mana to do much of anything, and likely needs 24 lands as an absolute minimum, even after lowering the mana curve. Your deck is going to be currently doing nothing with such a crazily-low land count and such a crazily-high mana curve

  • You’re running a LOT of cards as 1-ofs and 2-ofs, which will lead to massive consistency issues and an overall weaker deck. Going forwards, i’d advise you aim to instead play playsets (4-ofs) of those cards that matter most. A deck should usually aim to be mostly playsets of cards.

Braids, Conjurer Adept is Show and Tell on a stick, but as far as Izzet and Izzet-including identities, Esika, God of the Tree  Flip, Illuna, Apex of Wishes, Intet, the Dreamer, Jhoira of the Ghitu, Neera, Wild Mage, Sedris, the Traitor King, and The Ur-Dragon seem like the best options.
