Now Updated for Innistrad: Crimson Vow!

Since the original Innistrad set I've been trying to make a werewolf commander deck and they were all bad, because inevitably our werewolves would always be on their human side when it was our turn. So the werewolf player had to jump through all sorts of hoops to mitigate this problem, but it was never enough to make the deck good. That was then, this is now. Tovolar, Dire Overlord   changes all of that. No more hoops. Now we've got something with a lot of potential to actually be pretty good! We're not using our other spells as a crutch to prop up our werewolves and make them playable, but rather to make them win!

This is a werewolf tribal deck made to win by taking extra combats.

This plan works in several steps:

  1. We're using Tovolar, Dire Overlord   / Tovolar, the Midnight Scourge   to attack with transformed werewolves. Tovolar makes sure our werewolves are on their mean side whenever its our turn, as long as we have three or more of them. We are prioritizing efficient mana values to get this engine going as quickly as we can. We want to go under our opponents and start connecting before they can set up a bunch of big blockers.
  2. When those werewolves connect, then we draw lots of cards with Tovolar's ability. This is the easy part, and it is what enables us to dig through the deck to find the pieces we need for the rest of the strategy. Cards like Berserkers' Onslaught, Toski, Bearer of Secrets, and Ohran Frostfang let us double up on card draw.
  3. Then we can also use our attacks to untap lands or produce extra mana once we have things like Sword of Feast and Famine, Nature's Will, Bear Umbra, and Druids' Repository online.
  4. Now that we've drawn our cards and untapped our lands then we can use spells like Relentless Assault, Fury of the Horde, Savage Beating, World at War, and Aggravated Assault to take extra combat steps.
  5. As long as we're able to untap our creatures, generate extra combats, untap our lands or otherwise get more mana, and draw more cards, then this is basically the same as taking extra turns. We'll repeat this process for as long as we can keep chaining the extra combat spells we find through all of that card draw.

Once we find Aggravated Assault it combos with any of the four cards from step three to take all of the combats we want:

Alternatively, we can use our extra combat steps to try to draw into Berserkers' Onslaught, Unnatural Growth, or Triumph of the Hordes to close it out, though just attacking with a bunch of werewolves will often get there. Finally, there's a Blasphemous Act + Howlpack Avenger combo that is more or less accidental, but it can certainly end a game.

Also, just to say, I strongly recommend howling every time it changes to night. Its a howling good time!
