Update v1.0! Top deck for the Week! 43 Upvotes!!! —June 26, 2019

Wow, what a week! Thank you guys (and gals) for all of the support! We are now the Deck of the Week on Tappedout! That is really cool! Thank you guys so much for all of the feedback and support. However, I need you more... here comes a really big update! I need your feedback!!! 13 cards are being swapped around, and I am not sure what to think! I also adding a "Elemental Swarm" section to the Primer, which will make more since as you continue reading.

Here we are with out first set of changes since the Primer's conception! Typically the first one is pretty good, but it is important to note that these changes are still prior to any play-testing. I am currently in the Middle East, and it takes a couple weeks for cards to get to me, but they should be here soon. Anything I know I have at home or arrive late will be proxied until I can get my hands on them (mainly the fetchlands because I have them in my binder back in the US haha).

These changes mainly came from great feedback from all of you, notably; Rasmusmv, dingusdingo, Brynx and Starsky2814. Also note that I put some cards in the "Sideboard". These are cards that I think can be in the deck, just depends on the player/meta.

  • Clever Impersonator OUT FOR Sakashima the Impostor - Better I just about every way in this deck. Sure it can only get creatures, but that is what this deck is trying to do anyway!

  • Regal Force OUT FOR Tatyova, Benthic Druid - This is just better card draw at a lower CMC.

  • Tyrant of Discord OUT FOR Cavalier of Gales - I knew each of the Cavalier were getting in the deck, each of their ETBs are great to flicker! Gales provides a Brainstorm on a great body! Tyrant is a fun card, but expensive to cast in random... might try it at some point though (keep it in a sideboard and put it in some games for fun).

  • Maelstrom Wanderer OUT FOR Cavalier of Thorns - It hurts to drop Wanderer, but it really don't do anything for use but be big and powerful. Thorns might be the weakest of the Cavalier, but I still think it deserves a spot in the deck.

  • Sunbird's Invocation OUT FOR Tempt with Vengeance - The first of three cards I am adding to try out a "Elemental Swap" strategy. When Scampering Scorcher was spoiled I thought, "well that might be pretty good" but then I realize that it is just a bad Tempt with Vengeance for 4cmc! Sure, it call be flickered, but Vengeance will almost always give you tokens faster. Sunbird's Invocation is one of my favorite card, and I plan on keeping it close. Ill see how some of the cards in the deck behave after some play-testing.

  • Creeping Trailblazer OUT FOR Master of Waves - My second "Swarm" card. All this needs is devotion 3 to be good, and I don't think that would be to hard. The anthem effect is just gravy. (Max devotion is 23 btw)

  • Bane of Progress OUT FOR Elemental Mastery - My third "Swarm" card, and likely the worst. Sure, it makes more token, and with haste, but they dont stick around and it also makes whatever this Aura this is on a massive target. Also doesn't work with flickers or coping. When it comes to Bane of Progress, I will keep an eye on my artifact/enchantment count in the future, and if it drops enough I will put this back in I think.

  • Vigor OUT FOR Sylvan Awakening - The last "Swarm" card!. Awakening makes Omnath a recking ball, while also enabling you to swing at whatever is left alive! Vigor is cool, but clunky.

  • Izzet Signet OUT FOR Brighthearth Banneret - Izzet contains my "splash" colors, so I figured this signet is expendable to another 2 cmc ramp card.

  • Guardian Project OUT FOR Rhystic Study - Card draw upgrade in just about every situation.

  • Decimate OUT FOR Nature's Lore - Needed more ramp.

  • Myriad Landscape OUT FOR Command Beacon - Commander for 4CMC each time seems good. I will be taking a closer look at how I can get some land recursion in the deck without tweaking it to much... I already have Omnath, Locus of Rage and Lord Windgrace, I really don't need a third 'lands-matter' deck.

  • Reflecting Pool OUT FOR Prismatic Vista - idk how I missed the Vista in the first place.

Hey man! Like your list, we took different routes in some things, if you are feeling like it, this is my list: Kool Aid, Triple Flavor, I went to the more blink/kill combo with Omnath, make sure tag me in when you write your primer, I'm upvoting! :D

TortillaConfetti: Thanks man! I'll checkout your list too. I kind of made this on the fly and am definitely looking for some feedback. My first thought was "Play all the cool elementals" but maybe that is not the right approach. Although Omnath gets better based on the amount of elementals, it only happens when he enters. That I why i put Helm of the Host in here, but I also saw that you have Deadeye Navigator which might be a good idea. Thanks for the Upvote! I'll make sure to let you know when the Primer is done!

I think I am going to look into adding some flicker effects to get more use out of our commander, but I also am thinking about maybe some copy spells. Spark Double and Helm of the Host jump out to me! I was also thinking about maybe adding Bramble Sovereign and Blade of Selves and just changing all my creatures to ETB effects and just ran with that!

Also going to add Cavalier of Thorns once there is an English translation.

As far as puns go, how about this:

“Chocolate Hedrons and the Leyline-Flavored Water - Keep on Roilin’”

Kind of a long title, but it’s kinda catchy from the Limp Bizkit days. Lol.

Would Genesis be a good inclusion in this deck to buy back evoked elementals? Just throwing an idea around.

June 21, 2019 10:46 a.m.

I'm calling it right now: Five-Color Omnath within the next 2-5 years. LOL

Long Live the Angry Jellybean!

Guerte: I dont think I'm nearly cool enough to use a rap pun lol. Anger Wet Jellybean is kinda lame, but I guess it works for now.. What do you think about the deck? It was a reflex build, so idk if I cracked the nut on this commander yet..

GeminiSpartanX: you might be right about Genesis . Although I am not looking to reanimate here, bring able to pull key cards out for the grave to I can get more ETBs might not be a bad idea!

JohnMichaelBushman: I think wizards has to at this point! I this Five-Color Omnath called Omnath, Locus of the Leylines might be really cool and flavorful. In his effort to restore the mana on Zendikar he taps into the colors of each Leylines and becomes their controller! The fact that M20 has each Leyline in it might be a foreshadow! I dont know what he would do though, what do you think?

Thank you for those who UPVOTED! If you haven't, please do! It helps get viability on the deck and I could use the feedback. Thanks!

You get an upvote from me for the name alone, lol. Gotta say, though, this looks pretty solid.

DrunkManSquakin666: Thanks for the support man! The idea behind the deck is to get the most out of Elemental ETBs. The deck is definitely not Tier 1, but I think I could be pretty solid! I wish we could play the new Yarok, the Desecrated here!

Let me know if l'm way off with this strategy. It is just what came to mind after playing around with it for a while.

June 21, 2019 11:05 p.m.

VexenX I highly doubt they'd go back to Zendikar any time soon. We just had a massive war (that didn't really amount to much) on Ravnica and WotC already stated they'll be exploring other planes for the next few planes.

June 22, 2019 1:42 a.m.

VexenX says... #12

JohnMichaelBushman: I agree completely. It will likely take a few years at least. There was a 7 year gap between Zendikar and Battle of Zendikar (2008 and 2015) so maybe 2022? Not likely, but M20 also proves that returning to a Plane is easier then we normally think! It is more of a fun fan theory then anything though

Don't tag this as having a primer until the primer is written.

June 22, 2019 2:28 a.m.

VexenX says... #14

dingusdingo: The Primer will be up in a couple hours. I'm working in it right now. Look at any of my other ranked Primers to know I'm good in my word lol. It just took me longer then expected to finish (deck has been up for less then a day).

Yeah it's quite obvious the "primer" tag is to attract viewers/upvotes. As said above don't tag it as a primer if it isn't one, it irritates some of us. You even said "It was a reflex build, so idk if I cracked the nut on this commander yet.." Lol.

I play a Horde of Notions decks and I recently discovered Avatar of Growth . Havent' tested it yet, but it seems it would be a fun option here especially in 4-people pods. Also your missing Cavalier of Thorns; the land synergy is nice with the commander, and the graveyard has synerg with other cards such as Titania, Protector of Argoth etc.

VexenX says... #17

Rasmusmv: I'll make sure to tag you when the Primers up. Apparently people like the build enough to Upvote. Omnath was spoiled yesterday, I dont think anyone has cracked the nut yet. If you have any feedback that would be great! If you want to know what to expect from the Primer please checkout one of my others. My Omnath, Locus of Rage list is currently the third rated Commander list, so that is why I was so excited to make this deck!

Rasmusmv: I am new to the Elemental Tribal scene so the advice is appreciated! (I run Omnath, Locus of Rage as a landfall/burn build). I will be adding Cavalier of Thorns as soon as it is updated on Tappedout. The card seems really sweet! It is a shame you have to exile him for the second ability...

I've been looking at Avatar of Growth ... do you think give your opponents lands is to much? I guess you do get more benefit if you draw two cards off of it... this on T6 with Wet_nath in play mean two cards! You really got me thinking now! Thanks!

June 22, 2019 3:08 a.m. Edited.

Rasmusmv says... #19

Well Avatar of Growth is sort of group huggy so it's probably not cEDH worthy. But I play with a casual group for fun with good and bad decks and it especially helps the bad decks with a high cmc as well as people who are mana screwed from a bad mulligan. I imagine games are faster and more dramatic when everyone has mana in a 4 player scenario. The good part is that hopefully your deck has more synergy with lands than the others so you should gain more. Again I haven't tried it, but I'm looking forward to it!

TortillaConfetti, Guerte, JohnMichaelBushman, GeminiSpartanX, DrunkManSquakin666, dingusdingo, Rasmusmv: Primer is now LIVE! Please let me know what you all think!

I will be adding to a couple sections in the next few days. I also going to flash it up a bit in the future.

VexenX Thank you! looking good man, I am also happy you did include the Deadeye Navigator for the flickers, I will be looking from time to time to read the whole thing when it's finished:)

VexenX As far as the elemental tribal goes, maybe you could run Eyes of the Wisent ? Could get you some free elementals for when those pesky blue players try to do something during your turn. Idk if it's worth a slot but you could try it out. I'll be keeping an eye on this primer for sure, Omnath is one of my favorite characters lore wise and now hes got the blue boots!

June 22, 2019 11:01 a.m.

Rasmusmv says... #23

Didn't know Eyes of the Wisent was a card. It's pretty specific hate, but it almost has to be in the sideboard to bully your blue friends from time to time! I'll probably test it for fun :D.

June 22, 2019 4:06 p.m.

VexenX says... #24

BPots6694 and Rasmusmv: I like the look of Eyes of the Wisent in a super heavy blue meta! It is a really cool card that no one would see coming. I wouldn't play it in every meta, but if you can it seems like a fun card!

Thoughts

Cut Krosan Grip Zendikar's Roil Maelstrom Wanderer Sunbird's Invocation Blasphemous Act for sure.

Add in Nature's Claim Rhystic Study Mystic Remora Worldly Tutor Natural Order

Everything else that is 4+ CMC you should highly consider cutting too. Your average CMC is extremely high at 4.16. Even with land tutor density and high land count, you're going to spend turns 1-4 doing absolutely nothing to advance your game plan. You should consider that not all elementals have the same usefulness for generating a win, so you need to up tutor density and draw effects to smooth out your games. You should also really consider a counterspell package since you have blue.

Myriad Landscape is a nice idea but slow. Cut. I don't like any of your ETB tapped lands, they cost you turns and don't generate enough advantage for it to be worthwhile. I'm not wild about the ravnica bouncelands either, but they can combo with the commander for card advantage, so I think they're worthwhile enough.

I'm not a fan of Bane of Progress or Avatar of Growth . You should run cheaper, guaranteed effects that do those things in those slots. Bane resets its own counters if you blink it, and Avatar helps your opponents as well, neither of them is a fantastic beater.

Greenwarden of Murasa has a nice effect, but you should slot Eternal Witness instead. 3 CMC cheaper so its easier to combo with repeatedly. Greenwarden is tribal and can beat, but anytime you blink it, it can't attack, and its 6 CMC for a recursion effect.

Tyrant of Discord is another similarly flashy card at too high a price. 7 CMC for an unreliable wipe is just not worthwhile. You need your boardwipes to be castable when you're in a crisis situation, not a cherry on top of strong board advantage for a win. Cut.

You run a very high density of creature copys. Spark Double is great because you can copy the commander and get extra draws and counters. Not a fan of Clever Impersonator or Progenitor Mimic . I would much rather see extra creature tutors in those slots to create a strong board state, these copies currently feel like "win more" creatures.

You should consider some more 2 CMC spell ramp to help curve into a turn 3 commander. Nature's Lore and Three Visits are both great includes, there's also Rampant Growth for budget.

Not a fan of Blasphemous Act either. Run Pyroclasm or similar instead. Easier to cast as spot removal, and 2 damage is enough to take out the majority of threats or creature based ramp/draw that land on turns 1-4. It also doesn't wipe your own board when its cast later. Similarly, Decimate is slow to cast (4CMC sorcery) and can potentially backfire (you MUST choose a target for each, so you may have to choose one of your own). Replace with Naturalize or something similar.

There are certainly some other cards I'd like to see in this build too. Exploration Ghostly Flicker Displace Waterlogged Grove Fiery Islet Lotus Cobra and some counterspells. Also consider adding in some 1 drop mana producers even if they are outside tribal, Llanowar Elves Elvish Mystic Fyndhorn Elves Birds of Paradise Wild Growth Utopia Sprawl
