Scampering Scorcher Discussion

RNR_Gaming on Need Feed Back on Deck ...

So one of the 1st things to do when brewing is to look at the meta. Whats winning? Why is it winning? What answers do they have? What's the average kill turn. Figure out how your deck can deal with existing decks; if it cannot it will be a constant up hill battle dictated by your opponents having bad rng. There are a lot of cards in your deck that don't do anything immediately or require other cards to be functional. You're going to want to go wider; Chandra, Acolyte of Flame and Scampering Scorcher may help you in that endeavor.

With Chandra, Acolyte of Flame in the list's current state I would personally cut Scampering Scorcher for her. I mean the token haste is nice, but Chandra's tokens get haste too. And being able to recycle wheels/tutors seems strong enough that you don't hcare about the extra 2 damage. Plus most of your other elemental token producers make tokens with haste anyway.

Maybe try Ball Lightning , or Scampering Scorcher for a swarm strategy that you can bring back with Thunderkin Awakener . Instead of Lightning Serpent i would put in Spark Elemental because Lightning Serpent cant enter with +1/+0 counters on it from Thunderkin Awakener .

Cavalcade of Calamity will be a game-winning card in this deck, because Scorch Spitter has power 1, Scampering Scorcher will trigger Cavalcade 3 times, and Chandra's Spitfire will trigger Cavalcade of Calamity , and then, the damage of cavalcade will give him +3/+0.

Also, you can add Torbran, Thane of Red Fell , because is very powerful in red decks with Cavalcade of Calamity . For example, if you have Torbran and Cavalcade, your Scorch Spitter will deal 9 damage. (1+2 of the combat damage, 1+2 of the Scorch Spitter trigger, and 1+2 of the Cavalcade of Calamity trigger)

I was just using it as an example of how Scampering Scorcher is more than just a few 1/1s, as the synergy between the two key cards in the deck allow it to present more than just 3 damage. The "suicide mission" they go on doesn't really matter if they are going to be taking lethal/near lethal damage. Most early blockers are able to be removed/avoided with the removal suite, leaving an open board for Scampering Scorcher to swing into. The deck is full of ways to deal small amounts of damage throughout the first few turns, which all add up to being able to win on the back of 3 haste creatures.

The 3 bodies from Scampering Scorcher along with Cavalcade of Calamity provide a good way to recover from a board wipe, as well as provide a form of reach if the board is in a stalemate.

The non-token creature for Scampering Scorcher (i.e. the base card) is an elemental creature type, therefore all three creatures created with the card gain haste until end of turn. The ability of Cavalcade of Calamity to push through damage even if the creatures are blocked is the reason that the 1 power creatures work in the build. With Torbran, Thane of Red Fell , all instances of damage from red sources will be increased by 2. This means all combat damage, triggers from Cavalcade of Calamity , or direct damage spells like Shock are boosted.

The ability to create 3 1/1s with haste for 4 mana isn't the most impactful 4 CMC play in standard, however the synergy of all the cards in the build make it very powerful. It is very common to play at least 1 unanswered copy of Cavalcade of Calamity or Torbran, Thane of Red Fell in a game, making Scampering Scorcher effectively a finisher.

with Scampering Scorcher , thats only 2 damage with Cavalcade of Calamity because only the 2 tokens have haste. with "only" torbran, it becomes 6 damage IF the 2 haste tokens are unblocked.

honestly though, a 1/1 for 4 mana is just weak. the combo with cavalcade doesn't really matter when your opponent will just block the 1/1's, and if you're playing torbran first then you're not getting those 3 1/1's until turn 5, when there are certainly better plays to make.

Thanks for the input, however I believe for this list Scampering Scorcher is the better card to play. With only 1 copy of Cavalcade of Calamity on the field, it presents a guaranteed 3 points of damage on the same turn you play it. It provides more bodies that help to push damage through blockers, and with only Torbran, Thane of Red Fell it presents 9 damage for 4 mana. I understand what you're going for with the "board-wipe", however the reactionary implementation of a board wipe is not quite the direction this deck wants to take. Dagger Caster doesn't combo well with Cavalcade of Calamity , and without Torbran, Thane of Red Fell it isn't going to be very effective against a majority of decks.

I encourage you to try out the list, it will help you to see that Scampering Scorcher actually is a key piece to the deck finishing off a game.
