Sideboard

Maybeboard

Join us or die! (Budget UB Control/Aggro)

This is a very control-based deck with several evasive creatures to whittle the opponent down while minimizing the number of creatures on their board. It attempts to capitalize on ETB effects, such as that of the Hostage Taker, by using the flicker power of Siren's Ruse.

Fathom Fleet Captain and Dire Fleet Poisoner also have a lot of synergy. I can potentially deathtouch two opponents at once, or they'll be so scared of sacrificing anything that I'll get a free chance to create another pirate token without losing my captain.

It needs to be tested more - I've mostly just played against aggro/go-wide decks - but here are the main things I think I can improve on:

  • Turn 3 options (I have mostly 2-drops with almost no 3-drops)

  • Card-draw

  • Replacement for Walk the Plank when playing against Merfolk (Fatal Push is hard to come by)

  • Weak sideboard (I don't know all the bases I need to cover.)

I've been toying back and forth between the Dreamcaller Sirens, Fell Flagships, and Ruin Raiders, but the slower playstyle of this deck makes me worried I'll kill myself with the Raiders. The Flagship seems like it might give me the most bang for my buck, especially in a longer game, but it doesn't synergize well with things like Siren's Ruse, Dire Fleet Poisoners, or March of the Drowned (not to mention whatever creatures I take hostage). For this reason I'm leaning towards the Dreamcallers which make for a good finisher. I could also bring in Chart a Course instead of March of the Drowned, but that would give me even more 2-drops. Is there anything else I should make sure to have in my sideboard? Maybe some more graveyard or enchantment hate? I don't know how this would match up against a control deck either. It's mostly built to face creature decks.

Any help would be appreciated!
