Increasing the Budget and New Name —Nov. 29, 2016

I've decided to double the budget of this deck. Instead of having a max budget of $110 it's now $210. The $100 budget is just not good enough for all the cards I want to include to use combo with Breya. Arcum Dagsson is the main culprit for this change. He has jumped/doubled in price. He's too vital to this deck to cut. He can't fit into the $100 budget without cutting some decent lands such as Mana Confluence and City of Brass and I don't want to do that.

I'll be making updates to the decklist and the description over the next couple of days. Eight cards are being cut and replaced with the $100 upgrade. To easily distinguish the cards included in the $100 upgrade I'm marking them with an "A" in the decklist. The "A" usually means a card is altered, but in this case the card isn't altered it's an expensive upgrade. This way anyone wanting to use the less expensive $100 version can by just cutting the cards with an "A" next to them.

Here's a list of cards that I'm including in the $100 increase of the budget:

  1. Arcum Dagsson
  2. Master Transmuter
  3. Demonic Tutor
  4. Darksteel Forge
  5. Mycosynth Lattice
  6. Memnarch
  7. Tezzeret the Seeker
  8. Azorius Signet

These are the cards I'm cutting to fit in these upgrades:

  1. Panharmonicon
  2. Stubborn Denial
  3. Whirler Rogue
  4. Steel Hellkite
  5. Talisman of Dominance
  6. Perplex
  7. Executioner's Capsule
  8. Cranial Plating

These new card additions add a lot to this deck especially Mycosynth Lattice. Lattice adds a whole new dimension of strategy using Breya. All the new additions have synergy with Lattice including Memnarch who combos with it to steal my opponent's permanents. Darksteel Forge is particularly good with Lattice because all my permanents become indestructible. Master Transmuter is an artifact creature and a way to cheat all these high casting cost artifacts into play such as Lattice. Thopters as well as artifact lands such as Seat of the Synod are excellent with Transmuter. Tap Seat for for Transmuter, return Seat to my hand and put another artifact right into play. Repeat next turn by playing Seat again, tapping it for blue and returning it to my hand.

so for the winning combo do you sac breya herself too? ( can you explain?..sorry if I'm being thick just want to understand!...)

tweezer, thanks for the upvote. You only sac Breya if your using Nim Deathmantle to combo. Here's a better explanation of the combo. For this example lets say I have in play Breya, Ashnod's Altar and Deathmantle:

  1. Breya plus two Thopters.
  2. Sac Breya and one Thopter with Altar making 4 colorless mana. Leaving one Thopter in play.
  3. Deathmantle trigger happens use 4 colorless mana to bring back Breya. I now have three Thopters in play.
  4. Repeat infinitely with a net gain of one Thopter each time Breya is sacrificed.
  5. Use Alter to pay Breya's 2 colorless cost by sacrificing a Thopter in addition to two Thopters as part of her cost.

Can you explain to me how Eldrazi Displacer works into an infinite?

Fabricate is a pretty good budget tutor for this deck. Nice job! I love the Displacer in here!

hey Dredge4life, thanks for the upvote and the great suggestion. I cut Dispel and replaced it with Fabricate.

Made some changes today. Added Fabricate as a way to actually tutor for artifact combo pieces. I've forgotten about this card, thanks to Dredge4life for the suggestion. Added Marionette Master although she can be slow she's another win condition. Equipping a Cranial Plating to her before sacrificing can do a lot of damage.

I also added another combo piece, Grand Architect. Architect is part of another winning combo with Breya and Nim Deathmantle. Since both Breya and the two Thopters she creates are blue then I can tap her and the two Thopters even when they first come into play with Architect making 6 colorless mana. Breya herself is an artifact which means she can sacrifice herself to use her ability. Here's how the combo works with Breya + Grand Architect + Nim Deathmantle in play:

  1. Breya + two Thopters.
  2. Tap Breya + both Thopters + Architect making 8 colorless mana.
  3. Use 2 colorless mana and sac one Thopter and Breya using one of Breya's abilities. Leaving 6 colorless mana and one Thopter.
  4. Deathmantle trigger happens use 4 colorless mana to bring back Breya. I now have three Thopters and 2 colorless mana.
  5. Tap Breya + one of the new Thopters making 4 colorless mana and repeat the cycle.
  6. Repeat infinitely with a net gain of one Thopter each time Breya is sacrificed and brought back into play with Deathmantle.

What about Pili-Pala? It goes infinite with Grand Architect

SgtScrublord says... #9

It's also less budget friendly but Time Sieve goes infinite with Thopter Assembly, granting infinite turns

SgtScrublord, thanks for the upvote and suggestions. I really like both your suggestions especially Time Sieve, but like you say it's not really a budget card, although Tappedout is displaying it's price much more than it actually is at TCGPlayer. I could cut Krark-Clan Ironworks and replace it with Sieve. This change would add $1 while also giving me an alternative win condition with Sieve and Thopters. The problem with this change is it also cuts the redundancy of having both Ashnod's Altar and Ironworks. In this case if Altar gets exiled I would be unable to complete two of the winning combos. Is it worth it? Another option is to cut one of the more expensive lands replacing it with a more budget friendly one. Your thoughts?

What can I cut for Pili-Pala? I also want to add it, because I've been very impressed with Grand Architect. Possibles to cut are Marionette Master, Sea Gate Oracle, Refurbish, another more expensive land, etc. Your thoughts?

For the most part I feel like Marionette Master could just be Blood Artist or Disciple of the Vault. In terms of Pili-pala, you could cut a mana rock. Also, what do you think of Etherium Astrolabe for more card draw? Sacrifice excess thopters to draw cards.

Hey Dredge4life, Disciple of the Vault does seem better than Marionette Master because I can play it the same turn I want to combo because it's only one . I will lose the neat interaction that Master has with Cranial Plating, but that's fine. Thanks for the suggestion.

Etherium Astrolabe is another good suggestion I haven't seen this card before. I'm not sure if it's needed though because I have both Skullclamp and Trading Post which do the same thing. I could also include a way to untap artifacts such as Voltaic Key making Astrolabe better. Your thoughts?

Changes made today are I've added both Disciple of the Vault and Time Sieve. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I also cut Underground River and Darkwater Catacombs replacing them with more budget options Jwar Isle Refuge and Dimir Aqueduct. Making these lands changes reduces the cost of this deck enough to let me keep Krark-Clan Ironworks while also adding Time Sieve. Pretty happy about this.

To make room for Sieve I cut Refurbish. Disciple replaces Marionette Master.

I was thinking about having it replace Courier's Capsule because it's draw effect is multi-use and not one time only.

Dredge4life says... #15

Also if someone tries to exile a combo piece you can sac it at instant speed to put it in the graveyard.

Dredge4life, that's a really good point about being able to sac an artifact in response to being exiled. This is another reason Grand Architect is so good with Breya. If I'm tapped out I can still tap her or Architect or any other blue creature to save an artifact.

I will give Etherium Astrolabe a playtest in place of Courier's Capsule because your right Astrolabe can be used more than once. However I do really like Capsule with Silas Renn, Seeker Adept. I can loop it for four mana to draw two cards each turn.

Omut, that's some bullshit right there, but you're right. Thanks for the link and bringing the mistake to my attention.

Nim Deathmantle's ability is a triggered ability not an activated ability so I can't use mana made by blue creatures with Grand Architect to pay for it.

Architect is still a great creature with Breya he's just not a win condition with her now.

Omut, that's true and I know of the Thopter Foundry + Sword of the Meek combo. I wish I could fit it into this deck, but unfortunately this combo is not very budget. Even though the price of Sword is displayed wrong; it's really only $6 not $14, huge difference. I will try to find a way to fit them both in.

Due to budget reasons I don't think I can use the Sword + Foundry combo and the Ashnod's Altar or Krark-Clan Ironworks + Nim Deathmantle combo as well as Eldrazi Displacer and Time Sieve. The question is what is the best combo with Breya and Thopters out of all these choices? Your thoughts?

I would also definitely include a Nomad Outpost over almost any of the guildgates. Tri-lands are always useful.

EDIT: Bouncelands, not guildgates.

Changes made today are added the Thopter Foundry and Sword of the Meek combo, Omut thanks for the suggestion. Sphinx of the Steel Wind was cut and replaced with Steel Hellkite because Hellkite has better synergy with Grand Architect and is cheaper. Made some lands changes as well adding Darksteel Citadel, Azorius Chancery and Arcane Sanctum.

I like that Citadel is an artifact land, I can find it with both Glint-Nest Crane and Trinket Mage if I need a land. It also has better utility with many cards in this deck including Breya, Kuldotha Forgemaster and Thopter Spy Network because it's an artifact.

To make room for the combo I cut Sea Gate Oracle and Jwar Isle Refuge. To keep this deck at it's budget I cut Krark-Clan Ironworks, Skycloud Expanse and Reliquary Tower.

I didn't think I could fit the Sword/Foundry combo into this deck without cutting Eldrazi Displacer and Time Sieve which I didn't really want to do, but I made it work. All changes today added a whopping $2 to the deck.

Keep Krark-Clan Ironworks, cut Time Sieve instead.
