Deep in the Obscure festering woods, where cemeteries are forgotten and reclaimed by nature, the horrific rotlord Skullbriar feasts on the rotting and grows stronger, lost wanderers pray they don't stumble into his bogs, even the angels and demons dare not enter his domain, where Rot blooms and the rotting are devoured, and a mysterious beast lurks beneath the black bayou waters
My favorite color combination, and my favorite legendary creature, basic idea of the deck is to beef up Skullbriar, but if that plan doesn't go well, there are other ways to win, mainly aggro. let's go over what the deck does.
Commander synergies (+1/+1 counters/Trample/hexproof)
One of the nice things about skullbriar is, if he gets removed a lot and i can't pay for him anymore, i can always use his buff spells for other creatures i have on the field. but these are mostly ways to get counters on Skullbriar and give him trample/hexproof.
Increasing Savagery pretty basic, put counters on skullbriar, put more on him when you can flash it back.
Forgotten Ancient one of the best ways to get counters on things, free counters for anyone playing spells, that can be moved onto skullbriar, a decent blocker as well.
Forced Adaptation once again, very basic, get counters
Hardened Scales very good for one mana, get extra counters, pretty basic, again.
Jugan, the Rising Star pretty good beater, not amazing, but a 5/5 flyer has its uses, good fuel for sac engines such as Ashnod's altar or Jarad.
Ring of Kalonia Very good for Skullbriar, provides trample as well as counters every turn
Ordeal of Nylea most of the time this will just get skulbriar a counter and get you 2 lands, which is very good, helps you ramp a little and beefs up skullbriar
Obsessive Skinner not too great, but more skullbriar buff, that can add up to more buffs late game, or can be used to block something/sacrifice to an engine.
Corpsejack Menace always been one of my favorite cards, for this deck he helps you get a really scary skullbriar and is a decent sized creature as well, all kinds of value
Doubling Season very obvious for this deck, tons of counters as well as helping you get more zombies from grave titan or saprolings from mycoloth
Drana, Liberator of Malakir another flyer, which is good for this deck as it has very few flyers, but it will also beef up skullbriar and any other creatures if it hits a player.
Brawn Just gives skullbriar trample, good for fuel for a sac engine, or grabbing with Jarad's orders
Varolz, the Scar-Striped pretty obvious, scavenge everything onto skullbriar, if you need to sac stuff, he's alright for that as well
Hunger of the Howlpack worst case scenario, it'll give skullbriar another counter, best case it'll give him 3 (or more if you have doublers)
Swiftfoot Boots gives skullbriar hexproof, so he won't get killed and you can still beef him up.
Curse of Predation Gives skullbriar guaranteed counters when he attacks, and can deathmark someone in multiplayer
Necropolis Regent Another good sized flyer, can give skullbriar a ton of counters, pretty good.
Rancor beefs up skullbriar a bit, and gives him trample, also stays around forever, pretty much a green staple
Sword of Feast and Famine gives skullbriar protection from the color that has the most removal, lets him get through green fatties, and lets you untap all your land, very good.
Vigor a bit of an over performer if it sticks around, makes all your creatures scary to block or swing into, of course helps beef up skullbriar
Primeval Bounty gives you all kinds of advantage, more counters for skullbriar, more life, and more creatures, just value
Asceticism pretty obvious for any green deck, hexproof for all, also lets you regenerate skullbriar, if you need to
Slitherhead just for scavenge, decent for chumping or saccing to an engine
Dreg Mangler also for scavenge, but can get some damage in.
Llanowar Reborn a free counter on a land
Oran-Rief, the Vastwood rarely do i actually get to use this on skullbriar, but the potential is there
Removal
Go for the Throat very good, obviously, kills most thing you need to kill.
Garruk, Apex Predator probably my favorite planeswalker, kills planeswalkers and creatures, give you health, and makes beasts
Hero's Downfall kills what you need to kill, and planeswalkers
Putrefy kills what you need to kill, and also artifacts
In Garruk's Wake Board wipes are always good, And this will keep all your creatures in play
Abrupt Decay removes a lot of things that you would want to remove, either midcost creatures, or lightning greaves, diving tops, ghostly prisons, very good.
Acidic Slime gets rid of pesky artifacts or enchantments, good for blocking or saccing as well
Grave Pact good for getting rid of your opponent's creatures if you're saccing things
Sacrifice... a subtheme for the deck, has enough to give you some synergy, either through cards like grave pact or getting more counters on skullbriar with Mazirek
Sac engines
Ashnod's Altar very good for a lot of EDH decks, lets you pay for commander tax, or trigger sacrifice/death abilities, Sacrifice zombies from Grave titan or mycoloth for Mazirek buffs or grave pact triggers, sacrifice small creatures with not much use, like slitherhead or acidic slime to ramp into something.
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord very good for getting damage in, fling a Jugan, get counters and sacrifice trigger abilities Fling a dreg mangler, get some extra damage in and more sacrifice triggers, as well as the ability to scavenge it later on, a decent beater as well.
Varolz, the Scar-Striped just if you need to get sacrifice triggers, i mean regenerating him is decent as well if you need to.
Mycoloth Eat some stuff, get an army later on, and a big fungus
Sac triggers
Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest another flyer, but also, lets you get a big skullbriar, and big creatures if you can sacrifice stuff, your oppenents can help trigger his ability too!
Grave Pact very good for sacrificing stuff, gets rid of your opponents' stuff and will force them to make a trade if they want to remove one of your creatures
sacrifice fuel
Grave Titan the main one, pukes out a ton of zombies, sacrifice them for advantages
Mycoloth once again, pukes out a bunch of plants, use them for value
Solemn Simulacrum get its land ability, sac it to draw
Acidic Slime use its removal ability, eat it up for an advantage
Slitherhead eat it up, scavenge it on to skullbriar for free
Dreg Mangler same as slitherhead, except not free for scavenge
Creakwood Liege pukes out a worm, eat up the worm
The Aggro plan B
Dreg Mangler fast and can get some damage in, beef him up with a sword or a rancor if you want to, scavenge him if he dies
Vulturous Zombie a flyer that gets bigger as more of your opponents' stuff dies, once again, give him a sword or a rancor and he'll get some good damage in
Creakwood Liege makes all your stuff bigger, and pukes out some worms
Pathbreaker Ibex it's a goat, and it makes your stuff huge and gives them trample
Lotleth Troll he has trample, he regenerates, and he can get bigger if you feed him
Grave Titan a big rotting beater that pukes out small rotting beaters
Grim Flayer built in trample, gets bigger and lets you get a little bit of self mill
Strangleroot Geist lets you get some speedy damage in, and comes back, could be sacrificed as well, and come back for some more vengeance
Mournwillow speedy damage, can help out against token decks as well
Tarmogoyf The fabled gravemonster, a big beater for cheapp
The Gitrog Monster a big ol' frog beater, more on him later.
Card draw/tutors
Green Sun's Zenith grab whatever creature you need, pretty obvious for any green deck
Increasing Ambition grab whatever you need, flash it back later for more stuff you need
Read the Bones Just good card draw
Solemn Simulacrum sac it or chump something with it to draw
Jarad's Orders grab a creature you need, and throw one in the bone zone for later
Grisly Salvage basically get to draw a card and put some stuff in the bone zone for later
Ramp
Deathcap Cultivator gives you the colors you need, can block something and kill it later on if needed
Deathrite Shaman gravehate, some lifegain, some damage, and some ramp
Solemn Simulacrum get an extra land in play, just a great card in general
Birds of Paradise pretty obvious, if you need to you can sword/rancor it up for flying damage
Harrow get some more lands
Garruk Wildspeaker one of my favorite original planeswalkers, ramps and gives you beasts
Ashnod's Altar sacrifice a couple things, get some mana to ramp into something if you need to
Ordeal of Nylea very easy to pop this early and get some more land
Grave digging
Deadbridge Chant i love this card, always gives you something
Treasured Find get back a card you miss, or removal if you need to kill something
Vigor Mortis bring back something that died, except it's stronger
Deep in the Gitrog Bayou...where rot blooms and horrors skulk, something is brewing deep beneath the festering waters, an abomination seldom seen by the living, even The rotlord Skullbriar barely knows anything about it, it feasts on the drowned, and the rotting above, appears to be froglike
An obscure sub-subtheme, The beast of the Gitrog Bayou
Verdant Catacombs get an overgrown tomb, and draw a card
Harrow ramp, and also get an extra card
Grisly Salvage throw away some land and draw extra cards
Deadbridge Chant turns into some free card draw
Deathrite Shaman exile all those lands for free mana
