Mournwillow

Creature — Plant Skeleton

Haste

Delirium - When Mournwillow enters the battlefield, if there are four or more card types among cards in your graveyard, creatures with power 2 or less can't block this turn.

shadow63 naw, I don't want to mess with just taking Standard and changing it. I have some archetypes that I think would be fun but can't be used without a format like this because certain cards exist that make some of the pieces really broken.

Like Bg 'ramp': Using Dark Ritual and Elves of Deep Shadow to get to 3 black mana early and use value cards like Read the Bones and Mournwillow and possibly even Putrefy. No need for storm, or Pox(unless it needs to be added for balance, but no Storm ever)

I cut 2 Mournwillow and both Corpsejack Menace for a set of Satyr Wayfinder. The Wayfinder fills the graveyard, fixes mana and can be used for scavenging. During testing it felt superior to Commune with the Gods.

Varolz, the Scar-Striped is really good so play another copy and you'd be fine cutting Mournwillow Dreg Mangler and Big Game Hunter, especially since you have 6 instant speed removal.

Just have a couple suggestions at the moment.

Mournwillow: Trying to be 4 colors is a bit ambitious, especially when you have no ways to produce black mana other than Lifespring Druid. I'd probably take him out of the deck for now as it will be pretty hard to play him.

Card amounts: You had mentioned this is a mixture of cards you already have and i totally understand that, this is more of a suggestion for as you pick up more cards. The more you have of any given card the more likely you are to draw it. As a result as you start to get duplicates of good cards you can add them to make the deck more consistent.

I thought about a few three drops, and the only ones worthy of an inclusion are these, from best to worst:

  • Aethersphere Harvester: the best vehicle for creature based decks, Crew 1, flies and gives energy. Will probably happen, depending on further testing.
  • Yahenni, Undying Partisan: Haste, +1/+1 counters and hard to kill (except for White). However, no real evasion and much better in a token build. Still, might happen.
  • Drana, Liberator of Malakir: Evasion and +1/+1 counters for the whole team. However, a huge target for removal.
  • Tireless Tracker: I actually need them in another deck. Counters and card advantage, but too slow for my taste.
  • Catacomb Sifter: was good with Smuggler's Copter, now it's not aggressive enough and won't be crewing much in this deck at least.
  • Mournwillow: forget delirium, not happening here.

That said, I love having high impact 2-drops instead of 3-drops. Yes, Fatal Push is good against them, but you have so many it doesn't really matter. It also means that I am often able to put 2 creatures on board on turn 4, or even 3 with Servant of the Conduit.

FunkyTrousers28 I have looked into using Mournwillow on your suggestion. I really liked the card and even pulled a foil one the other day. I really like it against certain match-ups like control, and it lets me blow right through a wall of Thing in the Ice  Flip. Not sure if I'll adjust my sideboard but I do really like the card. Thanks for suggesting it!

what do you think of Mournwillow? i feel like it's an okay way to get in some sneaky damage once you have delirium, as by that point the opponent would presumably have a fair few blockers on the field.

You can make this deck very very much stronger by throwing about another $300 at it. If not (I don't blame you), you should consider dropping some of the less synergistic cards for additional copies of strong cards like Grapple with the Past and Soul Swallower. If you want to keep the deck within a reasonable price range, there are a few decent options to beef it up. Mournwillow, Obsessive Skinner, Inexorable Blob, Pick the Brain, Traverse the Ulvenwald, and To the Slaughter are all pretty good. If you have some cash and want to make it really good, look into Grim Flayer, Mindwrack Demon and Ishkanah, Grafwidow.
