He's said it himself. When you get even one poison counter, you're poisoned! It's not coming off, some cards care about this (which, yes, Zendikar had Vampire Lacerator and friends, but you don't trigger them at 18 life), and it can be made even worse by proliferate, even if most of us just prefer Giant Growth effects. The -1/-1 counters also feel like Torture and that's the whole point.

The problem is that it worked too well: Infect was a Tier 2 deck when in Standard, and at least in multiplayer Commander, it basically lets you remove one player before you die, but it was probably as salty as aggro gets. (Not for nothing last year's salt score ranking on EDHRec included Tainted Strike, Phyresis, and Blighted Agent as the third, fourth, and fifth saltiest commons.)

It was demons and pentagrams before, it’ll be something else again in the future; there is no stopping the pendulum. As long as we have Eviscerate, Piracy, Hurricane, Extinction, Torture, Blatant Thievery, and Murder everything will be fine ;p

Some thoughts:

  • Firstly, the BIG ISSUE: Persist will not work with Grim Poppet. It will make the Poppet enter with 4 -1/-1 counters, and die immediately (there is no chance during the brief few seconds it’s in play to prevent its death, this happens before you can activate abilities or cast spells). I would suggest ditching the Persist package and trying to find another way to get this scarecrow out onto the battlefield.

  • Chainbreaker does almost nothing for you here, as its own -1/-1 counters contribute nothing, and you won’t often be wanting to invest a whole turn just removing a counter. Considering your lack of 1cmc cards, I would think Fume Spitter a better fit.

  • Lockjaw Snapper feels like a strictly worse version of Soul Snuffers. I’d suggest playing the latter, if anything.

  • I feels like your deck will often really need 4ish lands in play to achieve what it needs to. I think you need to go up to 24 lands to help ensure that.

  • Torture seems cute, but its mostly just a super-inefficient killspell. I get you can put it on the Poppet, but that’s a lot of work for little gain. A killspell feels better, or at least Grind / Dust.

I recommend swapping Torture for The Ozolith

I think In place of Coat of Arms Im going to put in Black Sun's Zenith, It has proven to be resourceful in my tests, And instead of Blight Mamba I think I need a card like Scar, or Torture. Also I will probably take out Pharika's Chosen, because it has proven to be an empty card, and is worse than Wasteland Viper

Running through cards that help control Necroplasm, you can get a good amount of customized destruction by enchanting it with Torture and having a supply of on hand.
