Squelching Leeches Discussion

Thanks :) Had forgotten all about Squelching Leeches, that's a good value card. And it seems my mana curve was missing a 4-cost anyway. Just have to figure out if there's anything at all it can replace...

The deck looks pretty solid to me nonetheless :)

Since you commented on the primer, I figured I'd send you some love and suggestions, so +1 from me.
Here's my two cents.
I don't know what your budget is, but I'll go as cheap as I can suggestion-wise. My first suggestion would be to find a place to put in Gifted Aetherborn, as it has pretty much become the all-star two-drop of mono-black. A playset of them will easily make your deck have a strong presence against aggressive decks. I'd cut Grim Haruspex becuase while I understand the synergy with Rite of Belzenlok, it really doesn't do well in your three drop slot at all.
Cut Rite of Belzenlok and likely Squelching Leeches for either Lashwrithe or Desecration Demon (Maybe even Erebos's Titan) You really do want 4 drops that win you the game the turn after you get them.
Cut Skirsdag High Priest, the fact that you need a total of three creatures on the board for him to work is pretty ridiculous, given how you want to be winning with Gray Merchant of Asphodel as the top of your curve. I'd seek out either a better two-drop or perhaps a 3-drop like Nyxathid to go in it's place.
Guul Draz Vampire wants to be in a more aggressive deck than this one, I'd probably swap this card out for either a two-drop or removal/discard. As it won't hold up well against most of the decks you'd play at an FNM or something.
Duress is the ultimate budget sideboard card for black players to use for noncreature matchups.
I'd increase land count to make hitting 4-5 mana more consistent.
I know you took a look at the primer, but if you want to look at a more budget list that's closer to what you'd be looking for, I have one here:

with your current lands, Korlash, Heir to Blackblade is entirely useless. korlash is best in a deck where most, if not all, of the lands are swamps. same deal with Nightmare, and Squelching Leeches, but those 2 aren't modern viable regardless. not to be mean, but it kinda boggles my mind how you could read "swamps" and think to yourself "almost all my lands should be basic forests". Overgrown Tomb exists you know.
you don't run enough lands and mana ramp to be using all those cmc 4+ cards. land search does not equal land ramp, and the little ramp you do have has a high cmc of its own.

Hey, take a look at my take on the deck:
Maybe Brain Maggots can replace some of the hand disruption to add devotion.
Overall your version is very similar to mine.

Pretty classic monoblack big mana. I love you for including Dauthi Embrace, one of my favorite pieces of tech for mono black.

Hey man, love the deck. Always a fan of Kuro. But I just think that Nightmare and Squelching Leeches don't deserve a slot here. Additionally, Sorin's Vengeance, while flashy, only targets a single player, and ends up being fairly mediocre in EDH. I think you should really consider more boardwipes: Mutilate is phenomenal. Additionally, with Kuro, Pitlord on the battlefield, Horobi, Death's Wail becomes an instant boardwipe. If you want more boarwipes, Toxic Deluge, Decree of Pain and Damnation are the way to go. You also might want to consider more targeted removal such as Malicious Affliction. Falkenrath Noble and Victimize also seems mainboard worthy.
