Squelching Leeches Discussion

I like what you got going on here. Some cards I run in my mono black devotion that you could utilize as well are: Gifted Aetherborn , Hypnotic Specter , Ravenous Chupacabra , Squelching Leeches and possibly Bone Picker . I like the idea of Languish but I don't like killing off my own creatures; so maybe Grasp of Darkness for target removal. I'd definitely fit in at least 2 Cabal Stronghold .

Big daddy Erebos, God of the Dead would be a perfect fit here. Gatekeeper of Malakir and Geralf's Messenger are both high-devotion powerhouses. If you feel like shelling out the cash, Phyrexian Obliterator would be disgusting in here.

You could also use some more efficient and effective removal. Go for the Throat , Victim of Night , Fatal Push , and Hero's Downfall are all great options you have available to you. I'd look to play 6-8 pieces of removal in a deck like this.

If I were you, my changes to the deck would look something like this:
OUT: 1x Abhorrent Overlord , 1x Disciple of Phenax , 2x Korlash, Heir to Blackblade , 2x Squelching Leeches , 1x Barter in Blood , 1x Corrupt , 1x March of the Returned , 1x Mind Rot , 1x Sanguimancy , 1x Quag Sickness , 2x Sinister Possession , 1x Murder , and 1x Sands of Delirium .
IN: 3x Fatal Push , 3x Go for the Throat , 2x Erebos, God of the Dead , 2x Phyrexian Obliterator , 3x Gatekeeper of Malakir , and 3x Geralf's Messenger .

That's my take, anyway. Whatever you decide to do, good luck and have fun!

You're playing mono black and have nothing on 4 mana. How about playing Squelching Leeches?

Squelching Leeches and Nightmare are both pretty bad cards. Their effect isn't that strong, and you can get better things for that amount of mana. Might I suggest you go the Devotion route with Grey Merchant of Asphodel, Dread Shade, Gifted Aetherborn, Geralf's Messenger, and Vampire Cutthroat. If budget is not an issue, Phyrexian Obliterator...all day, every day. If it is, then Desecration Demon is an amazing choice.

I would also change your tags. They're very misleading. You have "Casual" AND "Competitive" in there, when this deck is nowhere close to being able to compete in a competitive format. If you want it to be aggro then you really need to lower the average mana cost of the deck. Aggressive decks win by turn five at the VERY latest, and this deck isn't doing that. It's also not a dragons deck, nor is it Suicide Black. Suicide Black revolves around a card called Death's Shadow or Asylum Visitor. Basically they win as quickly as possible without putting up any defenses.

Thanks :) Had forgotten all about Squelching Leeches, that's a good value card. And it seems my mana curve was missing a 4-cost anyway. Just have to figure out if there's anything at all it can replace...

Maybe Squelching Leeches and Nightmare

The deck looks pretty solid to me nonetheless :)

Since you commented on the primer, I figured I'd send you some love and suggestions, so +1 from me.

Here's my two cents.

  1. I don't know what your budget is, but I'll go as cheap as I can suggestion-wise. My first suggestion would be to find a place to put in Gifted Aetherborn, as it has pretty much become the all-star two-drop of mono-black. A playset of them will easily make your deck have a strong presence against aggressive decks. I'd cut Grim Haruspex becuase while I understand the synergy with Rite of Belzenlok, it really doesn't do well in your three drop slot at all.

  2. Cut Rite of Belzenlok and likely Squelching Leeches for either Lashwrithe or Desecration Demon (Maybe even Erebos's Titan) You really do want 4 drops that win you the game the turn after you get them.

  3. Cut Skirsdag High Priest, the fact that you need a total of three creatures on the board for him to work is pretty ridiculous, given how you want to be winning with Gray Merchant of Asphodel as the top of your curve. I'd seek out either a better two-drop or perhaps a 3-drop like Nyxathid to go in it's place.

  4. Guul Draz Vampire wants to be in a more aggressive deck than this one, I'd probably swap this card out for either a two-drop or removal/discard. As it won't hold up well against most of the decks you'd play at an FNM or something.

  5. Duress is the ultimate budget sideboard card for black players to use for noncreature matchups.

  6. I'd increase land count to make hitting 4-5 mana more consistent.

  7. I know you took a look at the primer, but if you want to look at a more budget list that's closer to what you'd be looking for, I have one here:
