Squelching Leeches Discussion

As long as you're doing monoblack with lots of black devotion and Swamps, I would also recommend Korlash, Heir to Blackblade, Nightmare, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Nightmare Lash, Squelching Leeches, Abhorrent Overlord, Erebos, God of the Dead, Mogis's Marauder, and Sanguimancy.

A few random suggestions that do well in monoblack EDH are Dictate of Erebos, Vampire Hexmage, Necropolis Regent, Blood Seeker, and Thief of Blood.

I think you would have a lot of success in this deck if you made it a little more Voltron-y around Drana. ★★★☆☆ Let me know what you think of the suggestions. Good luck.

As a fellow mono-black player, I've gotta support what you are trying to do, so +1, but I have quite a few suggestions:

  1. Since you are in mono-black, I'f suggest Victim of Night over Doom Blade, since Victim of Night is the least conditional removal spell in black.

  2. I'd highly recommend swapping out Vampire Nighthawk for Gifted Aetherborn, the card is more on curve and would allow you to be more consistent with what you are trying to do since the 2/3s are usually roadblocks by themselves anyway.

  3. Run Phyrexian Arena over Sign in Blood and a Duress, since continuous card draw is what really turns on the power of a mono-black deck.

  4. I'd move Duress to the sideboard altogether, since you really will noly bring it out for control/combo matchups, the best discard cards are Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek, but since you are on a budget, Wrench Mind or Distress are the best budget options.

  5. I'd honestly ditch the 2 Tombstalker for 2 more Stromgald Crusader, since the Tombstalkers are usually only good after you use cards like Smallpox anyway, and Crusader is a better mana sink.

  6. Since you don't have a lot of black mana symbols to take advantage of, I'm unsure if Gray Merchant of Asphodel has such a good pairing with Lashwrithe, I'd honestly reccomend just playing Squelching Leeches, but that's your call.

  7. The deck needs a sideboard plan, I'm sunsure what your matchups are, but good cards for mono black sideboards on a budget are Duress, Pithing Needle, Ratchet Bomb, Nihil Spellbomb, Lost Legacy/Memoricide, Hero's Downfall, Vampire Hexmage, Everlasting Torment, and Rain of Tears.

Let me know if you'd like any more help!

Cheers!

Appreciate the input PyroMechanical! I really like the removal ability of Victim of Night vs creature's deathtouch removal. I am going to throw it on the Maybeboard and give it a bit of thought/run it through some playtests.

Night's Whisper is very tempting compared to Read the Bones. When I was looking at the mana curve and judging which one would fit better, I decided to stick to the utility of Read the Bones - 1 more mana to decide if the top cards would be worth it.

I do like Pack Rat... like a lot! So much that I am going to start another Budget/Modern deck for Rats. However, for this deck, I am going to keep the mana ramp with Squelching Leeches. Thank you again for the comment and improvements!

I would cut down the Nightmare and/or Squelching Leeches for a playset of Pharika's Chosen and/or Typhoid Rats. It will bring your curve down and they both have deathtouch. That will give you time to draw into your 4 drops, especially since you're running a lot of card draw.

I really like this deck, even with the higher curve. Black is a lot of fun to win with, especially by five life or less, because most of that damage is self inflicted. It says that they still can't beat you even though you're doing half the work for them.

Korlash, Heir to Blackblade would be fun, but the price of 4 of them would double the cost of the deck. Korlash is more efficient than Squelching Leeches, but not as friendly to the bank account

I'm not sure about creatures but Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is my obvious first thought. Blanket of Night is a cheap Enchantment that has the same effect. I will remind you, redundancy is important. You don't want to lose your ability to Swampwalk because your opponent removes Urborg.

Contaminated Ground, Evil Presence, and Tainted Well all provide Swampwalk but only for one opponent each. Leshrac's Rite gives one of your creatures Swampwalk.

Korlash, Heir to Blackblade is a "Swamps Matter" Commander, although I'm not sure how good he will perform. Zombie Master can be ran to give him Swampwalk as well. Squelching Leeches and Nightmare are both creatures that benefit from a lot of Swamps.

Personally I run a Ghoulcaller Gisa deck that is Zombie Tribal. The Tribal theme is primary, while Swampwalk is just a hopeful Win Condition.

I figure you also want as much land ramp as you can get, especially if you are running Korlash as your Commander. Black has some issues with this but Liliana of the Dark Realms is good. I can't think of much else outside of Burnished Hart and Expedition Map.

You will definitely want to run Cabal Coffers, I suggest using all Snow-Covered Swamp and Extraplanar Lens to double the mana from each of your Basics, while not giving your opponents any benefit. Crypt Ghast and Magus of the Coffers are also good. Lastly, Lashwrithe and Nightmare Lash are both awesome.

Aside from the Phyrexian Dreadnought already mentioned, you wouldn't go wrong adding a number of the under-costed black creatures (demons mostly) that come with a significant downside to offset the difference.

For example, Abyssal Persecutor is a 6/6 flying trampler until you want to kill someone, then it becomes a horde of zombies with Gisa. Or, cast Demonlord of Ashmouth, immediately sac it to Gisa, then use one of the zonbies to pay its cost when it enters the battlefield again due to undying. See also: Desecration Demon, Grinning Demon, Master of the Feast, Shadowborn Demon.

I also suggest cards with beneficial x/x power toughness. Such as Sewer Nemesis, Nightmare, Korlash, Heir to Blackblade, Mortivore, Squelching Leeches.
