Mindwrack Liege Discussion

pyroblade5 on Niv-Cricket, The Token God- Casual Izzet EDH

Unlike a lot of builds I went with shuffle effects rather than strait wheel effects. Granted there are a few wheel effects but more one sided. I also run a lot more and varied removal than I see in a lot of lists. I tend to soft lock the board then swing in with overwhelming numbers. Still trying to fit in Mindwrack Liege because 3/3 fliers are terrifying

Your Deck has a pretty cute name too.

In terms of land...

I am a big fan of Academy Ruins. Skullclamp is a great card in this deck, and it sucks to have it blown up, milled, or discarded. Academy Ruins fixes this problem, and rescues Ashnod's Altar and Phyrexian Altar which also tend to draw a lot of hate.

I Also Like Strip Mine in almost any deck. It doesn't help you that much, but when somebody gets Gaea's Cradle or The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale you want to blow it up ASAP.

I'm not a huge fan of Temple of the False God. It being a dead card until you have 5 lands just feels too slow to me. I think either of the lands I have suggested would be better.

In terms of artifacts...

I suggest adding Pithing Needle for control. It can easily shut down decks that rely on their commander, like Yisan, the Wanderer Bard or Captain Sisay.

I really like Library of Leng. It let's you keep your hand, which makes your wheel's that more devastating. What is really killer is the second ability, which lets you keep stuff that would otherwise be lost when wheeling. (If you discard more than 1 card you can choose for some cards to go on your library and the rest to go in your graveyard).

For beating people down Coat of Arms is ridiculous. You have to be careful though since it is a universal buff, throw it down for the kill, not when you "Don't have anything else to play for turn". I did that once against a Krenko, Mob Boss and learned my lesson.

Mana Vault is great for getting out your commander out just a little bit earlier.

I would suggest cutting some creatures from your deck to make room for these artifacts, which I will list below.

In terms of creatures...

If you decide to add Pithing Needle, Library of Leng or Mana Vault then Trinket Mage is great utility. You can use him to get all of the above and Sol Ring and Skullclamp and Altar of the Brood. Being able to fix your mana base or get ready to ramp or punish another player is too good to pass.

I haven't used her yet, But Nin, the Pain Artist looks like a good fit. I would bump off Blue Sun's Zenith for her. You can ping locusts to draw, deck out others, and kill opponents utility creatures/mana dorks.

You should consider Cutting some of these creatures:

Psychosis Crawler will sometimes get big, but you'll probably be beating people down with locusts, and the ping damage can easily be replaced by buffing your locusts more or be out-damaged by your other enchantments.

Mindwrack Liege is kinda mana heavy. There are other things that buff better, and his other ability is ok. Not terrible, but not the best either.

Whirlpool Drake and Forgotten Creation suffer the same fate. If they costed a little less and came out a little faster they would be great, but whenever I got them out they where kinda "meh".

Mindwrack Liege Just costs too much. There are other things that buff better, and his other ability is so rarely used that it won't be too big of a loss to give him up.

36 lands seems to be the magic (pun intended) number for lands in an EDH deck, but not the only source of mana. Rocks like Commander's Sphere, Darksteel Ingot, and Chromatic Lantern are pretty much staples.

I don't personally use the cluestones or keyrunes unless I'm playing just the two colors, but that's just me.

On to the actual deckbuilding.

I like to use a single theme/card and build a deck around whatever mechanic said card has. If that theme is in certain colors, there are some things I prefer to use.

Some examples:

Selesnya: Privileged Position + Sterling Grove

Gruul: Familiar Ground + Gruul War Chant

Simic: Murkfiend Liege

Rakdos: Master of Cruelties

Boros: Iroas, God of Victory

Izzet: Mindwrack Liege

Azorius: Azorius Guildmage, Decree of Silence + Solemnity

Etc..

What are your targets for Mass Polymorph? Not what you are hitting what are you trying to pull out of your deck? Etherium Sculptor what are his target you have 15 artifacts but not many that cost more than 2 or three, how consistently is the the mana reduction going to count? Grand Architect I would replace with Mindwrack Liege. You already have two of the whirlpools why not add in Whirlpool Rider as well. If you are looking to kill with combat damage Coat of Arms would be good. Purphoros, God of the Forge would also be amazing in the deck. Vicious Shadowsworks really well also punishes people for board wipes and blocking.

You should definitely add in something like Path of Anger's Flame into the deck. I used it in my deck and it works extremely well. That, in combo with Throne of the God-Pharaoh, Hellrider, and Dictate of the Twin Gods let me swing for 336 damage with only 13 insects. Also, I would reccomend Mindwrack Liege. It is very useful in ramping up damage, and it helps you play your commander quickly if it gets killed. My final suggestion would be to add in As Foretold. It is very useful and helps to ramp up board presence much faster than your opponents. Also, it has the added benefit of helping to freecast your commander if someone keeps exiling him.P.S. If you have room for one more infinite combo, Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind, and Curiosity would be good.

Love your deck. Definitely got some good ideas for my deck. It's not as streamlined as yours though. Have you found that Mindwrack Liege made a big difference?

Well, I have a very casual blue/red EDH that is fun to play. It's a little bonkers though. It's still in it's first iteration, and plays like a bull in a china shop. Last night I blew everything up by flashing out a Bearer of the Heavens (using Mindwrack Liege) to block a 10 power. That was fun. If you don't care about winning and just want to get zany, you can check out Electric Storm Hug N Slug. If you want something competitive or need a clear path to victory, don't bother looking at it. Either way, good luck finding your next new brew! May your lands never come in tapped, and your spells always resolve.
